I recently opened up a new bank account with my fiancee. Being that I am a native of Conway, South Carolina I decided to go with the hometown bank, Conway National Bank. We opened up a checking account and a savings account. I have had several issues with this bank in the last 5 months where they would not post my deposits until a check cleared causing it to bounce despite the fact that I deposited cash into my checking account at 10:00am and the check did not attempt to go through until later that day at 6:00pm. The first time this happened was January 16th. I did not argue about this one due to the fact I was new with the bank and did not want to cause unnecessary problems. About a month ago I had a direct deposit go into my bank account at 7am. Later that day at 6pm a check went through and bounced. I went in the next day and took all the paperwork I had regarding the times the direct deposit went through and when the check went through. Clearly I had money in the bank before the check went through. The lady could not argue it and put the bounced check fee back into my account.

Yesterday I went to the local convenience store. The clerk told me that one of my checks had come back. I explained that I would look into it and pay them back asap. I went home and logged into the online banking. It showed that I had a balance of $184 when the $60 check attempted to go through. It showed that I had enough money in the bank the previous day to cover the check as well. Another thing is that every bank that I know of will deposit a check 3 times before sending the check back to the person/business that the check was written to. According to CNB this is not true. They say it is up to the person at the bank who is processing the deposited check.

When we signed up for the account we asked many questions. We asked what time do direct deposits get processed and what time debits/checks are e. Direct deposits go through once a day at 7am. Debits/Checks go through around 5:45pm. I found CNB does the most inconsistent banking of any bank I have ever been with. They let written checks/debits post to your account at all time of the night. I feel they do this to try and catch your account in a position where it may be possible for a check to bounce.

Back to the current issue:
I had a check bounce on 5/22/12. Unlike every other check I am unable to click on the check number and see the check. On 5/22 I made 3 deposits totaling $175 before this check attempted to go through. On 5/21/12 I deposited $160 also. On the printout it says at the time the $60 check attempted to go through my balance was $152.11. I spoke with the woman in the bank today and she claims the check attempted to go through the night before. According to the printouts for my balance at the end of every work day I had enough money to cover the check at any point.  I also watched when the transactions went through the night before and that particular check never went through on 5/21. It only went through on 5/22. I have all the documentation proving that I had the money in the bank when the check went through. The lady at the bank refused to return the NSF fee so I have no other option but to seek help and inform others. I will not let this shady crap slide.

On top of all that the women who work as tellers in the bank are pretty much all very rude with the exception of a few. I worked as an IT analyst for some much bigger banks and never ran across and bank full of rude employees. I have never had a bank tell me that it is up to a bank teller's discretion as is she wants to let a check post again.  Every bank I've ever used or worked for had a policy regarding this, not some stupid excuse basically stating a teller can decide how bad she wants to screw you over.

This is just the beginning. I am going to post this with every consumer protection agency I run across.

A couple of things...

When a check is unpaid, CNB returns it to the bank that presented it. THAT bank then follows it's policies by either sending the check for payment a 2nd or 3rd time or returning it to their customer (the person/company you wrote the check out to). CNB has no control over how many times it's presented for payment before being returned to the depositor. Either way you will get a NSF fee from CNB. If it's returned by the other bank, that customer will get a returned deposit fee that you should reimburse them for.

The question you should have asked was not when direct deposits get processed but "When you do your daily processing do you credit deposits first and then subtract debits or do you subtract the debits and then credit the deposits?" It sounds like CNB does debits and then deposits. What this means is even though you can see your direct deposit or cash deposit available at 7:00 AM, it is not available to cover debits posting that same day. example: your balance at end of processing 05-17-12 is $30. At 7:00 AM on 05-18-12 you can see your direct deposit of $600 in your account. However at 6:00 PM when they do the daily processing for they 18th: you have a balance of $30, your check for $60 is presented and returned unpaid because you don't have the balance to cover it, then your deposit is credited bringing your balance to $630 minus the NSF fee. Depositing money in the account the same day a check is presented only works out if the deposits are credited before the debits are subtracted. The best way to handle this is to not write the check until the money is available in your account balance. In this case the day after the direct deposit comes in.

And NO, I don't work for CNB. I worked for another bank and the biggest difference in banks right now is :are deposits credited before or after debits each day.
