I am an over the road truck driver and was unfortunate enough to deliver to this store. In my experience, most Costco employees are friendly and courteous. That was not my experience at the Sunnvale, CA location. To be fair, I did have an unusual favor to ask at this store, and my "favor" resulted in an unnecessary reaction from receiving employees "Bill" and "Angela", though I think both of them would have acted rudely regardless of circumstances.

I am on the road for approximately 30 days at a time. My cell phone busted while I was driving from Utah to California to deliver to this store. I called ahead and spoke to an employee in the receiving department. I asked if it would be OK to have my new phone delivered to the receiving area so that I could pick it up when I delivered to the store. The employee said it would be OK and to speak with "Angie" when I arrived, since she would be in charge of receiving that day. I thanked the employee and hung up. Now, if the employee had told me that it was against policy to have the phone delivered, or that there would be any problems, I would have understood and looked for another option.

I arrived at the store and asked to speak to "Angie". The woman answered, rather rudely, that her name was "Angela", not "Angie". I apologized and explained the situation to her and asked if the package from Federal Express had arrived. At this point, "Bill" interrupted and demanded to know who I spoke to. I explained that I did not ask for a name. Bill asked what time I called. I told him I did not remember, because he was practically foaming at the mouth and I did not want to get anyone in trouble. Bill said, "You don't know what time you called?" I replied, "No, my day runs 24 hours a day, so I couldn't say what time it was." Bill said, "I don't care what you're day consists of." At this point, if I had not been working, Bill would have been on his hands and knees picking up his teeth. Since I was on duty representing my carrier, I remained calm. I told him that if I knew there was going to be a problem, I would not have asked to have the package delivered. He responded, "You're putting someone's job in jeopardy, and if I knew who authorized this, that person would be fired." I replied, "If I knew that I was putting someone's job in jeopardy, I wouldn't have bothered asking. If someone's job was in jeopardy, that person should have told me so." I told Bill, "I'm sorry I offended your sense of decency, I'm sorry I stepped on your toes." At this point, Bill dismissed me, saying, "Go back to your truck, and I we will come get you when we're ready." He said it in a very condescending way, and again, if I had not been working, I would not have hesitated to smash his teeth out. I told him, "Ok, but if that package comes, please do not refuse it. I spent $46 dollars (Saturday overnight delivery) to have it sent overnight." Bill again spoke to me like a child and ordered me to return to my truck (which I own, for the record) and they would come get me when they were ready.

Rather than get in an even bigger confrontation, I just took a deep breath and went outside. There was another truck delivering to the store, and he had already checked in before my arrival. I spoke to him and he informed me that Angela had been rude to him also, and she gave him the same order to wait in his truck.

Two hours later, the receiving employees still had not come outside to tell us to dock. The other driver and I both sent messages to our office to complain about the long waiting times. The carrier said that they were being told that there was no room on the dock for our freight and advised us to work with Costco and wait. Finally, after another thirty minutes, they finally began unloading the other driver. After he was finished, they unloaded my truck.

I have never received such rude treatment from any Costco employee. To add insult to injury, I have been an Executive Club Member since 1994, which costs me $100 a year. Obviously, Bill is frustrated with his timeclock-punching career choice(still wears a nametag at his age!) but since he is the "Big Bad Boss", he feels the need to lash out at others because he is annoyed with his pathetic little life. "Angela" is cute and I write her off as a dumb bimbo who probably always gets her way.

Before anyone tries to flame me, don't bother. I am self-employed and make great money. I work whenever I want to, or if I feel like taking a day off and enjoying the sights, I can do that too. I own my home and drive a new Suburban. I have property in Las Vegas and Salton Sea. So don't try to hit me with the standard truck driver trailer-trash stereotypes. It will not fly with me.

By the way, I did get my phone. I called Fed Ex (kudos to them) and they met me at my truck behind the store and made the delivery.

Arrogance

I wonder if you thought Angela was a dumb bimbo from the get go. Maybe you acted arrogant like you were acting when you wrote that. By the way Costco managers do not punch time clocks. You would be surprised to find how much his salary is. I work at Costco and am disappointed that an employee would act that way. A manager cannot fire an employee for such a small infraction and am surprised that he would say that. However the punching timeclock's and dumb bimbo comments offended me a little. I think I have a great job with Costco and I make good money and provide well for my family. I don't think my life is pathetic just because I wear a name badge. I make enough money that I can even buy a new suburban and take the six weeks paid time off I have and travel. That's not including my paid holidays and floaters, sick time etc. I also own my own home. Wow it seems Costco employees are not trailer-trash either.

Sorry if I come off as arrogant, but that is the way it is.

Cory, that last part was intended to be a pre-emptive statement for any Costco employees who decide they are going to attack me about this report. Like I said, almost every employee I have had contact with has treated me professionally. I don't intend to get into a pissing match with anyone over this report, and that statement addresses anybody who flames me on this because I won't respond to any of their attacks. Sorry if I come off as arrogant, but that is the way it is. Thanks for the input.

Hey Shawn, We were with you all the way about Costco, until you got to the part about "Before anyone tries to flame me................ We don't care. I've read that same spiel here before. About the gravel trucks. So spare us.
