I took out a years membership with Costco, formerly known as the price club; It expired last Sept; and as I was unable to afford the renewable fee for 3 months I did renew in Dec; some 3 months later; During the 3 months it had expired I was denied all privileges of membership until it was renewed; Eventualy when I did renew it, it was dated from Sept to Sept, thus giving me only nine months for a years fee'; When I complained about this, they replied that each membership is renewed from the original month it was originally entered So, what it boils down to, is that I am charged a whole years membership fee of $44 for only nine months use;;

Similar experience, with reasoning behind why membership is done this way

AUTHOR: Aulich - (Canada)

POSTED: Thursday, October 02, 2008

I had a similar experience with a membership renewal although I understand why they renew it this way. When paying for a membership, you are entitled to various "perks" such as an extended warranty on electronics including television sets and laptops. These perks are only valid for the time the membership is in effect. If you purchase a product and then cancel the membership, this extended warranty is no longer valid, unless you renew. This renewal is then taken back to the time of the original cancellation to make it fair for everyone. In some cases, Costco has voluntarilly extended warranties on some of my purchases for up to 10 years, and paid for any repairs and absorbed the cost (as long as my membership was in effect for the entire time).

Call Costco Membership Services or See Costco Mgr.

AUTHOR: Ken Hubert - (U.S.A.)

Give Costco Membership Services, or the local store manager a chance. I've been a member of Costco and Price Club since 1987 and have NO complaints with their products or service. Their service is Awesome and I've even returned 3 yr. old items that were out of warranty - for a cash refund and no questions...even without a receipt!

Their membership is worth every nickel. PERHAPS, this person initially reached a low level employee on a bad day - escalate the matter a bit and I'm sure Costco will stand behind you.

Costco Prorated Membership

AUTHOR: Hussein - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, July 28, 2007

While I am surfing my favorite web site (ripoffreport), I saw a report of compliant about Costco. I want to clarify that I am legally not representing Costco with this comments, I am only taking the time to Write this report to explain how Costco membership is set up.

Costco is a private Membership club. Having a current membership allows the member to maintain their shopping privilege. Your sign up date is your anniversary renewal date example: if I joined Costco on 7/5/2002, my renewal date will be at the end of my anniversary sign up month the following year 7/30 or 31 of 2003. If I failed to renew by the end of my anniversary sign up month and choose to renew three month down the road because I was on vacation,Costco system by default will uses the anniversary month , meaning you will end up with lesser membership cycle but the same renewal date.

pro-rating membership

AUTHOR: Dave - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, February 18, 2007

I can appreciate Costco year to year membership. But if I choose to wait 3 months to renew, why not prorate my membership to 75% of the cost.

In fairness to both, a 6 month or so time limit for renewal would allow for the company to not carry the dormat account and also allow the customer a chance to reconsider.

Call Memberservices

AUTHOR: George - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, October 18, 2006

I mean if anything why don't they just call the membership line or go to a membership desk and ask why, I'm sure if you put up enough of a gripe they would still honor the full year. I mean c'mon it's costco, I can't remember the last I was cheated out of something from them but I know I sure as hell can cheat a lot of them. The power lies in the hand of the consumer with this company.

Interesting

AUTHOR: Cory - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, October 18, 2006

You were "unable to afford to renew your membership at costco, yet you were denied all privileges". You knew you weren't a member yet you attempted to shop anyway. You couldn't afford the fee, but you could afford to shop. That's not right about charging you for the three months though I suspect the reason they do that is because people who don't shop often will only renew their memberships when they need to shop. It's probably in their rules of membership.

My 2 cents

AUTHOR: Nicole - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, October 18, 2006

While $44 seems like a small amount (under $5 a month), it is a horrible business practice to charge for services not rendered. If you renewed in September, it should go September through September. If you renew in December it should go December through December! You were ripped off. No question. I would demand a refund. Hand the card over and demand your money back. If you used a credit card, try to reverse the charges for services unrendered.

WOW 44 CAD

AUTHOR: George - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, October 17, 2006

I find it unbelieveable as to how $44 CAD is such a big deal. I mean let's be honest here have you really looked into how much a Costco membership costs you daily??? 4.89/month to shop at a store that offers deeply discounted prices and a return policy that nobody even touches. I mean for crying out loud you're complaining about losing out on 3 months. Tell you what, since they have a double gurantee why don't you just turn your membership back in on the last day to get a full refund and purchase it again so you rip off costco for a year.
