As a Christmas gift this past year (2012) my husband, Kendall Oden, bought an AKC registered Great Dane puppy litter date: 10/16/2012 from Kim Barber of Country Boys Great Danes in the amount of $1400.00.  The Puppy was paid for in full at the time of pick up on December 20th, 2012.  We were to contact the breeder after the holidays to obtain formal AKC paperwork and breeding rights.  The seller met us in Crestview, Florida; therefore, this transaction did occur on Florida soil.

On the 23rd of December (3 days after purchase of the dog) my husband and I began to notice strange behaviors in our new dog, Tiny, i.e. periodic crying, vocalizing, confusion, wandering, and seemingly blindness.

On December 25th, Christmas Day, while I was at work my husband had to rush our new puppy to the Affiliated Pet Emergency Room located in Gainesville, Florida due to increase of symptomatology and new onset of musculoskeletal  sensitivity and mouth foaming.  Kim Barber was notified of the issues with the puppy and she asked that we please keep her informed.

As the ER examined our puppy, Tiny, they found nuchal rigidity and temporary loss of vision.  The Veterinarian prescribed tramadol for pain and prednisone for any potential swelling and recommended that we follow up as soon as possible with our primary care veterinarian.

I had to work the 26th of December so the day after the ER visit with Tiny, I scheduled an appointment for December 27th with Town and Country Veterinary Clinic located in Starke, Florida (our home town vet).  Unfortunately, at 8am on the 27th my husband and I witnessed Tinys first seizure.  The onset occurred while the puppy and I were napping on the couch.  Tiny began to cry and jerk in his sleep, his eye lids began to twitch, his arm, leg, and jaw muscles spasmed violently, and he began uncontrollably foaming at the mouth.  Immediately I loaded the puppy in my car and transported him to my vets office.

Once at the office they took Tiny back for an examination and lab work.  Shortly after they informed me that they recommended they keep Tiny through the day and night so that they could begin IV therapy including fluids, antibiotics, and anti-seizure medications.  About 6 hours had passed when the vets office gave me a call to inform me that they had not been able to control Tinys seizures with IV valium or phenobarbital and they were uncomfortable keeping him through the night with no one there to care for him.  After taking this into consideration, I myself being a critical care RN and my best friend being a veterinary assistant, I decided to take the dog home with his IV still in place to care for him through the night in hopes of getting him on the road to recovery.  To say the very least, it was one of the longest nights of my life.  With no help from the phenobarbital or PR valium Tiny seized approximately 6 times through the night and I found myself back at my vets office first thing in the morning on December 28th.

Unfortunately after many tears and much prayer, taking into consideration the professional advice of my Vet and after speaking with the breeder, it was decided that Tiny needed to be euthanized because neither I nor the breeder had thousands of dollars to spend on taking the puppy to a neurologist for further specialized treatment, scans, and testing.  The breeder said to me personally that we should not invest money in an attempt to fix the dog, nor did she want the dog back at her kennel around her other pups.  Therefore, the dog was euthanized at my vets office in Starke, Florida.

After the euthanization, we began patiently working with the breeder in order to obtain our refund.  Given the situation, at this time my husband and I were not ready financially, physically, or emotionally to take on the responsibility of another animal.  Kim Barber told us that she had spent all her money on Christmas gifts for her children and did not have our refund at the time.  So we patiently waited through January because she informed us she would be getting her tax refund in the mail and would have our refund then.  To say the least February came and went and we had $1400.00 still invested in a puppy we had for a mere 6 days and almost $600.00 in accrued veterinary bills.  Kim Barber at this time stated she could only write a bad check.  As March rolled around, time had passed, and my heart had healed, so I began entertaining the thought of getting a new dog again.

I contacted Kim Barber on the morning of March 12th to let her know I was interested in obtaining a replacement puppy instead of the monetary refund we had been requesting.  Since money seemed to be such an issue for her family at the time, I figured this route may be easier for her also.

I quickly found a puppy on her website that I loved and notified her about this new dog.  Kim agreed via email to give me this specific puppy as a replacement.  This dogs price was higher than what we paid for Tiny, so we agreed that my husband would void the added refund cost of the vet bills we accrued at Christmas and call it an even swap.  She specifically stated, I just dont want hard feelings or negative comments posted on the internet.

After some confusion regarding where Kendall and I would pick up the new dog, I agreed I would meet her at her home in Andalusia, AL.  Kim stated she had to be out of town for work related purposes and would obtain health papers on this puppy the following Thursday (the 21st of March).

On the 16th while I was browsing other Dane websites in the internet I found the exact dog I was supposed to be receiving for replacement as agreed on the 12th of March, posted on another site for sale!  This sale advertisement was posted on the 16th of March.  Just 4 days after our agreement!

After questioning Kim about this issue she stated that I had only a $1400.00 credit with her (minimum purchase price for a puppy on her site now is $1800.00) and I would have to pay the difference if I wanted a dog.  After this, I simply sent her my home address and asked her to please send me my $1400.00 refund.  It has now been 3 days and after many failed attempts via e-mail and telephone, the Barbers refuse to make contact with me.

contract

AUTHOR: Ron - ()

POSTED: Monday, April 29, 2013

Why on earth would anybody send back a blank contract? That makes no sense to me or anybody with half a brain. The puppy was diagnosed at 8 months old, but had problems with BUNN and Creatine showing high from the first time we had her to the vet.We could never speak with your vet and they would never call us back, even though I told you numerous times "let us know what to do, have your vet call us and tell us where to take the puppy and how to correct this issue, because she is going to die." Well nobody would get back to us as what to do or where to take her. But it wouldnt have helped any how, The DNA tests shows she would have died from renal dysplasia anyhow, which comes from the parent or parent. You NEVER offered to take the puppy back, and I was asked once, sarcasticly, "what do you want another puppy" Well no I dont want another of yours to put thousands of dollars into just to bury another one. The only offering of another puppy was after she died, and NEVER mentioned free shipping, WHOOPIE fre shipping on another dieing puppy, Thats whatn I want. All I want is my money back just like the Odens. But as far as finding peace, My life is very peaceful as long as I dont have to deal with people like you that only care about one thing no matter who or how many people get hurt, The old mighty dollar. So Kim, I do say About this god bless, he returns what is given out, so you also god bless.

Contract

AUTHOR: Kim - ()

POSTED: Saturday, April 27, 2013

The contract you sent back Ron does not have any info filled in on it...it's just the way it was sent to you. The Odens will not fill theirs out and sent back a blank one as well. Amazing how you told the Oden's your puppy was diagnosed after 2 weeks...really? Our vets did talk with you vets but your vet told ours they were not sure as to what was happening with Zena. Like I said I have talked numerous times with you and Jackie.I offered to take dog back after you told me in March she was sick and you did not want to send her. I do not believe Jackie will state that I didn't offer her a puppy and free shipping which oh by the way...my contracts doesn't state free shipping or payment for vet bills nor does any contract from breeders that I have ever seen.If you feel you have been wronged then do what is necessary but slander is not the best route. Have a Great Day and I hope oneday you find peace in your life . God Bless

Just one lie

AUTHOR: Ron - ()

POSTED: Saturday, April 27, 2013

kim is right, it only takes one lie to be a liar. we have sent her contract back long ago, well before the puppy she sold us with renal dysplasia died. we still have not recieved any papers or money for the dead puppy from kim only after the puppy was dead did kim even offer another puppy and never mentioned paying for any of the vet bills or free shipping. as far as talking to her vets, 5 that she states, we tried as you can see in the e-mails above to kim, i asked her numerous times, tell us where we can take this puppy, what we can do, have her vets let us know what to do, because we have a dieing puppy that would like to know, after 9 months of trying to get answers from kim and her supposed 5 vets the puppy died of renal dysplasia and still no answers from any of her vets or from kim. kim is the type of person that only cares about recieving money and when there is a problem, it is not her problem, its your problem, kim did nothing wrong it will always be you that did something wrong. we did everything possible to keep this puppy alive and kim did nothing, nothing at all to help in any way shape or form to help and resolve this matter. as she states in her contract, " no puppies will be sold without a signed contract" she tells us the odens that we have no contract to be honored, well there is the next lie, she doesnt even follow her own rules. so people be warned of this lady, our next step will be to have her in court to be resolved.

What makes a Puppy Mill a Puppy Mill ?

AUTHOR: Kim - ()

POSTED: Friday, April 26, 2013

What constitutes and makes a puppy mill a puppy mill? Well it certainly isn't one that exercises their dogs daily, knows everyone's name , age, birth date, and where they came from; Feeds a quality dog food, feeds granular vitamins on every piece of dog food that they eat daily, checks hips & elbows, makes regular vet visits, gives all shots , places well socialized puppies, etc. and the list goes on and on. I have plenty of vets that can stand up and say I am a very Far cry from a Puppy Mill...Ron, you have talked to USDA, States Attorney, Better Buisness, just to mention a few. Everyone agreed with me .I have hashed back and forth from you have no facebook but yet you send me a request, to having your vet as well as you state you had issues with Lepto. READ your own vets words please. How many lies does it take to be a liar? Only one! I have not lied to either of you nor will I. You did not send a contract back either...remember but yet I told Jackie I would replace her zena and pay for shipping. But once again you do nothing but hack and bad mouth. I am through playing tag on these sites.  The sad thing is...theres not site to say POSITIVE things about Breeders, companies, Etc. There's plenty of Happy Families with my puppies that come back to buy more. The thing thats wrong with this world today is people love DRAMA and if there's any within miles they flock to it. If anyone reading this needs to speak with ANY of the 5 vets that we see ( not all vets are great in every field) then I will gladly provide you with their numbers.

I just wanted to let you know that sept of 2011, I found a puppy on your website from Country Boys Great Danes that I purchased the puppy, The puppy was found to be born with renal dysplasia, She had to be put down Nov 26. Kim Barber will not return my calls or try to make it right. She has sold more litters since we let her know there is a problem. I just want people to be warned of her poor bussiness in the future. I have all the vet and vet specialist reports since she was 4 months old to support this. And as her contract the dog has to be fixed to receive the AKC papers, The vet stated the dog would not survive being spayed, So as of this day Kim still will not send me her papers. Now I guess it doesnt matter because the dog is gone now at 1 year and 5 months old. Please warn people of her practice and not let her sell anymore puppies on your website. I can send you any paperwork and phone numbers you would like to support these claims.
Thank you
Ron

Hello Ron!
Below is Kim's response to your complaint:
I was out of town sorry... Ron did purchase a puppy from me that was born last year. When the puppy was approx. 6 months old they took into vet for a Lepto shot(since they had one died not purchased from me that died of Lepto). The notes I recieved explained some complications from that being a rash. after the second dosage of that same vaccine about a month later the puppy still had issues but overcame them. In March 2012 they then thought she had renal kidney displasia. I had never heard ever heard of this in Great Danes. I answered my phone and all emails along with taking their paperwork to our vet of which she did not think that was what she had. We did have our dogs tested all three (Sire, Dam, and offspring we kept out of same litter) and neither one had this disorder. I have tried explaing this to Ron but all he can do is scream at me and threaten me. I have told Ron and Jackie I would even take their puppy and keep her along with send them a new one but they are not happy with that either. After taliking with AKC, Staes attorney generals office, my lawyer, not to mention the numerous breeders I have asked about this they have told me thats all I could possibly offer. After several calls ,emails, postings on facebook, with nothing but negitive threats and promises I have stopped answering his calls and emails. He emailed me back on Thanksgiving telling me he hoped I had a good Thanksgiving that he was burying a dog and I replied back I was sorry. Then approx. a few days later said it he was burying a dog again and sent me pictures of her dead in box and in ground. I talked with Jackie early one morning last week and expressed how sorry I was and that when she got ready for another puppy I would send her one. I will even pay for shipping which is way above anyone else would do. I have raised Great Danes for 18 years with NO problems ...I add people to our family and I do not want anyone unhappy but I don't know what I can do to make him happy other than the thousands he claims in medical bills he has. In all breeder contracts it states we are not liable for vet bills only replacement of a puppy. I have copies of everything if you need it. Sorry we have to all go through this but I promise and God knows I never intended this to go this far or happen.

Hi Beth,
I do not know where Kim is getting there was a problem with a Lepto shot or one that died from lepto Jackie did have a gret dane that passed before we bought this puppy from Kim, It was 12 years old, It died of old age, living past their life expectancy. Where she gets lepto from I have no idea at all, And I have no idea of any rash thepuppy from her had either. The problem we had with Kims puppy was the first vet appointment shows kennel marks on her elbows and poor appearance, Then after having problems trying to potty train the puppy, The vet felt she had a bladder and/or kidney infection and treated her as such. the when we took the puppy to be spayed the vet did blood work and called Jackie and said we have a problem, The puppy's kidneys are failing. Though they did not know why. We took her to a vet specialist in Cleveland Ohio and they did tests on her to find out what was going on, They came up with the same results, Her kidneys are failing. They said she would not survive being spayed as she would not survive a biopsy. So neither were ever done, we wanted to have the puppy as long as she would live. Then we found a place to have DNA testing done and it came back positive for being a carrier of Renal Dysplasia. We contacted Kim in March about this whole ordeal and she said she did research and I guess forgot all about us stating that her vet does not believe thats what she had. In numerous e-mails to Kim I told her to tell her vet to get ahold of me Jackie or our vet and vet specialist and let us know what is wrong with the puppy, where to take her and what to do to fix her, Because our vet and vet specialist said she would not live to her second birthday, and they were absolutely right on. On the 28th of November Jackie talked to Kim about the puppy passing and Kim did state at that time that she had her dogs tested and found she had two carriers, Which is different than what she has told you. Kim NEVER offered to take the puppy back and care for her and she never offered another puppy with free shipping. Although I would not want another of her puppies because she does not tell the truth and she will talk in circles around the issue at hand. As far as her being threatened or screamed at, That is just rediculous and a lie. Kim states she has answered my calls and e-mails, That also is a complete lie, The only way I could get her to even respond to an e-mail is to tell her I am posting her on facebook, which I was not even a member of. As far as her stating we talked to her lawyer, I wouldnt even know who that would be, We are in the process of sending letters to the AKC Because as of today we still have not recieved the AKC papers for a puppy that is now dead and gone that I paid Kim 1600 dollars for. We are also in the process of going through the USDA, because she has sold us a animal that died of RENAL DYSPLASIA, and who ever else has bought one from her. The USDA is involed because she is selling animals for commerce.
After I reviewed the vet reports from this puppy with the vet we found her BUNN and CREATINE levels were high from the first time she was taken to the vet, I do believe the vets should have picked up on this sooner, but they did not. I do have all the paperwork reports and DNA results I can send you, I also have all the e-mails that were to and from Kim showing where she did not want to do anything for us or to help in anyway. If you need me to send anything,Please let me know, I will send all if it will help.
Also I have attached a couple of e-mails from kim so you can see some of what she is like.
Thank you and I hope this helps.

Kim,
Am I going to hear from your vet what he thinks is wrong with Zena? I would really like to know because we have a dieing puppy that would like to know also. It is going on three weeks since we brought this to your attention, I need some answers on what you are going to do. We have 4,590 dollars into this puppy, she is going to die, So where do we go from here.

From Kim:
The problem with Lepto came from Ron telling me when he bought the puppy. If Ron would read his doctor's medical notes the puppy after given the shot had a bad rash. The first appointment Ron refers to does say the puppy is in good condition and I can provide such doctors notes as well as a copy of the states health certificate from our vet as well as pictures of the puppy he recieved taken before his flight to him. Ron did not pay for breeding or show rights to this puppy; we do not send out papers from AKC until the dog has been fixed . He made me feel very uncertain of him wanting these so strongly since he was claiming to having problems with her. I did not state I had any carriers...it takes two legs of the gene to be a carrier. I told Ron I had rather deal with Jackie and I have been dealing with her. She knows that I offered to take the nearly 1 year old puppy back when she started having problems with her. I am really tired of the back and forth and this will never be resolved so it seems...since Ron is NOT on Facebook he must have just deleted because I recieved a friend request from him and bashing from his facebook friends of course that know ONE SIDE which is his SIDE...the only side he thinks exists. I never said he talked to my lawyer please reread and see how he reads things into words not even there. Please find the sentence I'm referring to" After talking with AKC, States attorney generals office, my lawyer, not to mention the numerous breeders I have asked about this they have told me thats all I could possibly offer." Just because the puppy carried the gene of renal dysplasia does not mean that it died from that. Ron would never consent to an autopsy to my knowledge. I also have all correspondense as well.

Hi Beth,
I still have no idea where kim gets the first Dane we had died from lepto, she was 12 years old, 10 and 1/2 years older than the one we bought from kim that died of Renal Dysplasia, That we have the DNA papers showing she is a carrier of Renal Dysplasia. As far as having an autopsy done-WHY she is dead, we have Dna tests that shows she carries the gene for Renal Dysplasia, as far as having her fixed, We could Not have her spayed because she would have died, as far as having the biopsy, she would have died, we had the DNA test done and came back positive. Renal Dysplasia only has to come from one parent, If only one parent has it, there is a 50% chance that 50% of the litter will get it, and 50% of them will become active and die from it. And I had to buy one of them from Kim that die of Renal Dysplasia, Which Kim did state to my Fiancee Jackie that when she had her dogs tested she had 2 that were carriers of RD, That was Kims statement to Jackie. As of today, 12/24/2012 we still do not even have the AKC papers from Kim, No we did not pay for show or breeding rights and didnt care to have them, But we were supposed to have AKC papers, It is not my, Jackies or the puppy's fault she was born with Renal Dysplasia and could not be spayed, could not have a biopsy, could not have a litter of puppies or even a second birthday. And kim has never offered me or Jackie to take the 7 1/2 month old (when first diagnosed)back and care for her or another puppy with free shipping, Her statement once to me was,"What do you want another puppy" after the puppy died at one year and five months old she offered Jackie another puppy, But never when the puppy was alive. As far as the puppy's appearance when we recieved her and her first vet appointment shows,"kennel marks on elbows and below average appearance. This is not a one sided story it is two, I looked for a puppy for my Fiancee and found the one I knew Jackie would fall for and found her from Kim and paid a total of $2122.99, Could not potty train the puppy from day one, had carpets ruined from vomiting, numerous vet bills and Jackie having a broken heart because her puppy died. The first side Kims side is she sold a perfectly healthy puppy with nothing wrong on Kims part, The second side is, I bought a puppy from Kim that died at 1 year and five months old of Renal Dysplasia and can do nothing about it besides take Kim to court, which will be next. This is the kind of thing I dont want to go through again or see anybody else have to go through, We had a puppy from Kim that needed allot of vet care, needed to be taken out to go pee every 2 hours and had to have a special diet just to survive to the age of 1 year and 5 months, That is absurd. We paid Kim allot of money for this puppy and this is how she treated us, She couldnt even understand why we would want the AKC papers for a puppy that was dieing. Is that the professional way of doing bussiness? I would hope not. I have bought Jackie another puppy from another breeder, and this puppy, (which we have only had for 2 weeks) is already potty trained. she can sleep all night long, And we do have this puppy's AKC papers, and this puppy has not been fixed yet. This is what I wanted from Kim and all I got from her is headacke and heartacke. This lady should not be selling any kind of animals to anybody or even giving them away to people that will only get attached to them and then have to bury them. I'm sorry but I would rather buy from a puppy mill and have to treat the puppy with medicine and care and be fine, Wher Kim is not even that good. Im sorry but thats the truth, The puppy died of Renal Dysplasia, It is shown in the DNA test and Kim can do nothing but deny that it came from her breeding, Thats the only way they get Renal Dysplasia. I will send the e-mails and vet reports and DNA test and do anything I can do to help. Thank You, Ron.

Really ????

AUTHOR: Kim - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, April 24, 2013

I'm glad to know Ms. Oden has all of the vet files on Jackie's puppy as well. I have emails from Jackie and Ron and their problems started after they had their puppy almost 2 years. Our dogs were tested and they never wanted to go to the expense of have a biopsy done. I'm glad Ms. Oden has spoken with them;their vets; and knows the history because that being the case she knows that they were offered a replacement puppy anytime they were ready , shipping included, not to mention I offered to take their 1 and a half year old back to care for her. Even after finding that they had a previous dog die from Lepto of which their puppy showed the same signs. My vet's numbers are free for the asking if anyone thinks I am a Puppy Mill...trust me we are a far cry from it. Jackie not sure you gave her permission to air your laundry but it can sure be aired just as hers was. after 18 years of breeding and an offer to replace both puppies if this is what I get then fine-See you in court-

Can't honor a contract WITHOUT One!

AUTHOR: Kim - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, March 20, 2013
The Oden's took their puppy to the vet within 48 hours of picking up with a great report. Either one will not send our contract back; so it can be honored. We told them to return the puppy before they spent money at vet as well as me spending hundreds on him.Cause was inconclusive. Demanded a 2200 replacement puppy at 4:22 p.m. afternoon of the 12th. I told her I would not place one with them without a State's Health Certificate and they have sent threatening emails and harrassing phone calls ever since. I told her I would give her a 1400 credit toward another puppy and she said sure but when it come down to it she wanted the 2200 puppy without HEALTH CERTIFICATE and for a replacement.

That is not the way it works with a contract much less without them wanting to return one. Ask yourself...Why won't they simply send the signed contract back? How can you predict the future of the 21st. on the 20th? I am not going to fuss...I am proffessional and my record has stood for itself for 18 years now. If ANYONE wants references from any litter from the past 18 years I will look entire litter up and you can call them. I have always run this kennel with respect to the buyer but as a breeder I should also be entitled to some.

I raised this baby for 10 weeks, kissed, talked to him, and spoiled him only to have to end up paying to have him put to sleep an have an autopsy done on him of which I paid for.(Putting to sleep was recommended by their on call vet) Normal breeders do not do that. Most breeders let the buyer pay all expenses of proving everything. I was told this baby was left unattended and he COULD HAVE fallen off of a bed in the garage. Now you have to think for yourself...why would you leave a baby where he could possibly hurt himself in a strange area? Garages normally have rat poison, oil, and antifreeze on the floor, not to mention cleansers, degreaser, and the list goes on. How does a HEALTHY puppy one day turn into one so sick the next? I was assurred by the Oden's they had none of the items listed above in their garage...Do you believe them? What's in yours?

I could pick her and his story apart word for word and lie for lie . Do I really want to for people that are not interested in buying a puppy? But if you are interested in the phone recordings, pictures , vet reports before this puppy left and after, emails, texts, doctor bills I paid, or the hour phone calls I was one the phone with their vet and mine...I will be more than happy to get those for you. But to keep a fuss going I will not...just simply return a contract before you expect it to be honored, call my house in a civil tone without screaming , and email without threats.
Anyone wishing more info can call me @ 334-488-1366 Thanks!
