Here is a letter I sent to Target Corporation about a patio set that I bought from their store that the table top shattered for no reason at all:

June 17, 2008

Re: Item #009002120, 6-Piece Target Home Collection Patio Set, Powder Coated Steel Frame

Mr. ......:

I bought a 6-piece patio set from your Villa Park, Illinois Target Greatland store on Saturday, May 31st, 2008. The Target Home Edition patio set was advertised in your flyer for $99.00 and included 4 folding chairs, a glass top table and an umbrella. This past Saturday marked 2 weeks of having the patio set and already the glass table top has broken. My husband and I were getting ready to put our 6 month old in a blow-up pool on our deck that was next to the patio set and just as we were getting things together to go outside we heard a loud noise coming from the backyard. I looked out on the deck and to my surprise the glass table top had shattered not only all over our deck but pieces of the glass went into my sons pool. I have enclosed pictures of what it looked like. Once you view the pictures you will see what a large problem this caused for us. Not only do we not have a patio table now, by no fault of our own, we also had a large cleanup. The glass got in the cracks of our deck and fell down underneath. This was very time consuming to clean up. Since it was a safety issue, we felt it was necessary.

I contacted the store which we had bought the patio set from and was told that because we paid cash and no longer had the receipt there was nothing they could do for us. All I was asking was that the table top be replaced. I didnt want to return anything or get our money back, I simply wanted to just get a new top to the table which we only had for 2 weeks. I was given a phone number to call for warranty and recalls which I called today. I was told that the Target Home Edition 6-piece patio set that I bought just 2 weeks ago was already discontinued and that there was nothing anyone could do for me. I have 2 problems with this. #1: what if my 6 month old son would have been out in that pool when the glass broke and he would have been hurt? Then you would be receiving a different kind of letter. #2: No one is even trying to help find me a replacement for the defective merchandise that was bought from your store. The woman that I talked to said that I could file a report for safety but that was all she could do. I know there are merchandise and cashier reports that can be run that would almost certainly identify the patio set being sold to a cash customer. If you need to know some of the other items bought that day that would also appear on the receipt, please let us know. Although this patio set was on the inexpensive side, we do not work hard to buy nice things so that they can break in 2 weeks for no reason. I was researching this same table and chairs online and saw on
cpsc.gov that it was recalled just this past October due to the chairs collapsing when weight is applied to the front end of the arm rests, posing a fall hazard to consumers. Ive attached a copy of that report for your reference. So now I say, who not to say that this table and chairs should have been actually recalled again this year because of the glass breaking instead of Target saying that it was discontinued because Target changes out their product so many times during the year...thats what I was told by the woman that I talked to today. If thats the case then I should be able to find it online as a clearance item, when in fact I cant find any trace of it except on cpsc.gov as a recall item.

Basically all Im asking is that someone help me out and find a replacement for the defective table that was bought from your store on May 31st, 2008. I dont think that Im asking for too much. Im not asking for a full refund or to return the whole patio set for store credit. I just want a replacement that is
similar to what we had for 2 weeks. I also think that this item should be recalled in case this does happen to someone else and someone is less fortunate than us and is hurt in the process. I hope that you will be able to help us out.

I hope that as a loyal patron to Target stores, you will take my request seriously. I am not trying to take advantage of Target, or to get something that isnt mine. I realize that I do not have a receipt and administratively that presents a problem for you. I am concerned that the new tabletop will also be
defective, but feel that it is a chance we have to take, as we have already invested our money in this patio set. I hope that Target will take responsibility in helping me to resolve this issue by either replacing the tabletop or working on some other type of resolution. I realize that Target is a large, foreign owned corporation, but that shouldnt change the attitude that every customer matters.

They then responded with this letter just yesterday:

Dear Kristen:

Thanks for lettins us know about your recent experience with 6-Piece Home Patio Collection you bought at the Villa Park Target store. I'm sorry for your trouble you've had.

reat products, great value - that's what shopping at Target is all about. We do work hard to make sure we have only the best products on our shelves. Iv'e created an incident report for your experience with the patio set and sent it to a representative at our Guest Reporting Center. They'll be in touch with you as soon as they can.

As you know, return of defective products at Target are easy when you have a receipt dated within 90 days. If you can't find your receipt - and paid by credit card, debit card, GiftCard or chec, we can probably find it for you! Just bring in the item along with your card or checkbook; we'll check our records to see if we can help.

Without a receipt, the manufacturer, Courtyard Creations, maybe able to offer warranty or repair options. They can be reached at (877) 539-7436, 8:30 am-5p. ET, Monday-Friday.

Thanks for taking the time to tell us about your situation. Your comments are a big help to us, and I'll make sure to share them with our buying team. We'll keep working to make sure you can always count on the quality you've come to expect from Target.

Sincerely,

Target Executive Office

I'm sorry, but I don't think this is enough. This is a generic letter that someone in their corporate office sent me to "try" to make things better. Guess what it didn't make anything better. I then emailed the manufacturer and I'm still waiting to hear back from them....and from the sounds of other people's stories, I won't be hearing back from anyone there. I hope that others read these reviews and do not buy any products from Courtyard Creations. I saw online somewhere today that they actually make a baby swing....sorry but I wouldn't even think of putting my 6 month old in any of their products!

Same thing happened to us!

AUTHOR: Lindasus - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, May 17, 2009

We puchased a set of patio furniture (manufactured by Courtyard Creations). My husband spent 2-3 hours assembling everything, and before I even had a chance to enjoy it--the table top shattered! If I did not see it I would not have belived it. My husband was putting the umbrella thorugh the hole, and when he adjusted it the table shattered into a million pieces! I'm glad my one year old was napping instead of being out side with us!
We have not been able to reach the compnay (this happened on a Sat and they are not opne on the weekends apparently). I am shocked and very upset that this could happen! A table top should not shatter without cause.
Even if they replace the top, I will be afraid to let my son near it!!

And the sound you just heard...

With all do respect to 'I am the law' and 'Qwerty777' yes Glass can apparently explode without warning or known cause. Hearing a loud crash today I raced downstairs thinking my GermShep/Lab had nocked something over. The dogs were inside with the door shut. Outside on my covered porch my six sided (Courtyard Creations) table lay with glass shattered, one or two small pieces falling as I arrived. Let the facts stand for themselves:

Questions and Responses for the naysayers:
How much load did you have on it? (the eqv of perhaps 2-3 plates)
1 kids smaller (pistol type) sized super soaker approx wt maybe 2lbs
1 small set of visegrips (used outside for another project)
Was it in the sun?
No it was on a screened in covered porch at a point which did not receive any direct sunlight.
Was it misused?
No, never and it's never been transported such as a home move. We're the original owners and have taken.
Was it damaged in the box?
No, I've had it for a couple years and there has been and was no visible damage.
Did something fall on it?
No nothing was touching it or in close proximity that could have caused a problem
Did your dogs hit it?
No they were fortunately inside and the door shut
Was there anyone else home that could have done something?
No, the backyard is also fenced; gate latched and nobody insight
Damage like that couldn't occur without something else being damaged could it?
Guess what, the glass end table within perhaps two feet of the table in question was fine. A large clock/therm/bari within 2 feet with a thiner glass front was not affected.
Another point in reflection:
For those that are unfamiliar; one of the car companies had a similar problem with safety glass 'mysteriously shattering' in rear windows. I know a family member that had it happen I believe twice. They were driving along and one of the rear windows exploded (no it was not a bullet, as there was no exit and the dealer had confirmed others had the same problem.

That which we don't understand we sometimes critique.

When you have time you might want to think about an apology to the original poster...but that's just a thought.

Don't know about that....

Glass doesn't just spontanously explode. It just doesn't. Something had to happen there. Maybe it was the heat, the child hitting on it with something, I don't know.... all I'm saying is that the child's pool shouldn't have been under there anyway as glass is always a potential danger. My advice here is to keep hounding the manufacturer and, if these tables are as defective as you say, go to the BBB and maybe even the news.

Maybe you should make up your mind..

Maybe I'm reading your report wrong, but in it you claim:
"I am concerned that the new tabletop will also be
defective, but feel that it is a chance we have to take, as we have already invested our money in this patio set."

however, then you go on to say:
"I saw online somewhere today that they actually make a baby swing....sorry but I wouldn't even think of putting my 6 month old in any of their products!"

So then why do you want a replacement so badly? If you truly believe the product was deffective, and claim others have had the same experience, why go through the bother and hassle again? This only makes me believe that the table was not defective and something at your home caused the glass to break, and now you want another for free. If youre going to go on slandering the company and its products saying that they endangered your child, don't ask for a replacement.

#7 Author of original report

In response to everyone's response to my post....

I see that people don't know how to read and see that I did in fact contact the mfg of the product that was bought after getting the info from Target Corp and they have yet to respond to me....guess I won't be hearing from them. Also, if you read the recall correctly it says that you don't have to actually sit on the arm of the chair for it to collapse, that just by applying any sort of pressure to the arm of the chair, as in using it to stand up or push yourself forward, would be applying pressure to the arm of the chair and cause it to collapse. But if you could read you would have noticed that's what they were saying. Of course no one with half a brain would sit on the arm of a folding chair!

Also, if you search Courtyard Creations on this site you will see that other people have had the same thing happen to them....so yes, the glass table top did shatter into pieces for no reason at all! But hey maybe I should have had my 6 month old outside in his pool so that when it did happen, the pieces of glass that did go into his pool when it shattered would have hit him maybe in the eye.....bet you would have had something to say about my parenting skills then too huh! Maybe you should read before making comments.....

ok

I'm sorry but I just can't see a big piece of glass spontaneously exploding without something first being done to it. You can't seriously expect me to believe that without first being damaged in some way, shape or form, this piece of glass just decided to shatter itself. That's a little farfetched. Now if you had taken it out of the box and it had a crack in it, and you set something on top of it, and it broke, then maybe thats feasible. There has to be more to this story though. And as for the chairs being recalled for collapsing from weight being put on the arm rests...who sits on an arm rest of a fricken folding chair and expects it to stay standing?? Maybe I read this recall info wrong or something, but what I got out of it was that you think its unsafe to be sold because some idiot decided to sit on the arm of some flimsy folding chair, and he fell over, and its the companies fault? That's insane. And since the table is discontinued, you need to contact the manufacturer. Target doesn't make that table, and doesn't have the glass to go on it.

The Importance of a Reciept

AUTHOR: Electronics 1174 - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, July 08, 2008

Without a reciept, Target does not know when you purchased the product, and in other instances, whether or not you got it from Target. Target has a really nice system that allows them to look up reciepts if you paid with a check or a depit/credit card, which allows them to comfirm your date of purchase. Sometimes Target sells the same sets of patio furnature from year to year, without a reciept, they don't know when you bought it. Remember that a retail store sells products, and it is the role of the manufacturer to repair things. That being said, a store still needs to stand by its products which is why they gave you the necessary information about how to get ahold of the manufacturer.

Sounds like they handled it quite well

Most of the products sold are warranted by the manufacturer, not the store, unless you bought an extended plan with them. They offered to take care of it as long as you paid by credit card, check, etc. What is your problem?
