This may sound like the same old story that you have read from other CR England lease drivers, and the thing about that is this: When enough people tell you the same thing, there's most likely some truth to it. My numbers may not be exactly the same as theirs, and my precise individual situation may not be exactly the same, but when it comes down to it we were all in the very same boat at one time or another, hearing the same captains telling the same tales of "money to be made."
However, some good things happened to me before I signed my lease, and it would only be fair to give credit where credit is due.

I left Georgia a year ago under the promise of truck driving school and a career. I arrived in Cedar Hill, Texas and went through the classes. While I understand that some students of the school were dissatisfied, I was quite impressed with the instructors. Even today, I still smile when I think of some of their little quotes, funny sayings, etc. The staff in Cedar Hill was always very good to me.

I got on the truck with a wonderful trainer who to this day remains a close personal friend, and we get together now and then when he gets to Florida. We had a lot of fun and racked up some memorable miles during the 5 weeks I spent with him. He was well experienced before he leased with England, so they didn't give him any crap.

After I went through upgrade, I got on the truck with my CAT trainer, who was another wonderful person. I spent 4 or 5 weeks on the truck with her, and we had a wonderful time. Though she herself was relatively new to trucking, she was a very professional person, and a great friend. She didn't give me any lies, they treated her pretty decent, too. There were a few problems with her DM, but they were worked out quickly. So far, My England experience was everything I was told it would be.

Their success motivated me toward the leasing program. I signed the lease and got on the road. The first two weeks went quite well (with the exception of having to sit in Carthage, Missouri for a couple of days over a receiver not having a number he needed, but I was well compensated for sitting). I made it home to change my license, saw some family, and went back on the road. My next load picked up in Ft. Meyers, FL and delivered in Fogelsville, PA. This turned out to be one of my last "good" loads.

My next load was from the same part of PA to South Plainfield, NJ (about 80 miles) for DHL. To start, I was loaded late. When I pulled from the dock to the guardshack (distance of about 200 feet), the dock man came flying out the door screaming and cussing at me because I pulled that short distance with the doors open. I attempted to kindly explain to the man that I left the doors open for the inspection at the guard shack and he started yelling at the guards. The guards told me not to worry about it and that I did the right thing considering the short distance. They give me the clearance to go and I went to the drop point in NJ. When I got there, I got screamed at again for being late. I explained to the man there what happened in Pennsylvania, and he said he would be in contact with them and my company. Since I was loaded late and didn't get to leave the pick up point until it was almost the time I was to deliver, my DM handled everything and I didn't get a late load against me. Thank God, because I believe in being on time for things.

That afternoon, I was to pick up a load in Newark, NJ going to Sacramento, CA. SWWEEEETTT! Just got out on my own and they're giving me a long haul like that! After going through a bunch of stuff with the shipper between my permit (NJ issues 24-hr alcohol permits), and the trailer being unapproved by the shipper AFTER it was loaded, I ran out of hours for the day. Despite everything, I got the load moving at a good pace. I got to Reno, NV at about 9:00 Tuesday morning, and the load was to deliver on Wednesday. I knew the trip packs had to be in on Tuesday to get paid the following week, so I called the receiver and advised them that I was only a couple of hours out, and asked of they could take the load early. They said that they don't take any loads after 10:30, so I would have to bring it in the morning. That meant I wouldn't be able to send the trip pack until then. It was a week-long trip, so there was 1 wk without pay. No big deal, I can get by til then. This is one of those things that happens.

I used up my hours for the week getting this load delivered, so I took a 34 hr restart in Lodi, CA. My DM was very cool about this. I had an emergency come up regarding my daughter, and my DM made arrangements for a return trip to get me back toward FL. He was awesome. I made the return trip, turned in all my trip packs, and needed another restart (another week long trip, used up most of my hours), so I took the restart at home. This trip ended up being turned in on a Tuesday, in the same "week" as the run to CA, so I figured out my Variable costs, fixed costs (including 2 weeks of truck pymt/ins, etc), and elective deductions. I should have received around $2200 in pay for the two trips.

My next trip ended up being a team load, but I had no 2nd seat. While figuring my trip plan, I get a call. "do you want a 2nd seat? He needs to get his CAT so he can go out on his own" According to my trip plan, the load would have been several hours late, so I took on the 2nd seat. He had been out of the truck for a while, so he needed some refreshers on shifting, mirrors, etc. I stayed up with him to give assistance, and I didn't get much sleep the first couple of days. Though our first two loads together were a little late, he got back in the groove quickly and we made a good team.

Here comes payday...the day two cross country trips were to pay. My first real decent paycheck in years. 2:00 rolls around and I call Comdata to see what my balance was. $25. That's it, $25! I gave it another couple of hours, still only $25. I called my fiancee to look up my stub on the computer and to chec to see if all my trips were approved. All trips were approved, but only the trip FROM California paid, not the trip TO California, and my pay stub now showed a "balance due." They took out my 2 wks of truck pymts/ins, and 2 weeks of fuel like they were supposed to. I called payroll, all they said is that it should have paid, but they didn't have a clue why it didn't. Maybe it'll be on next week's pay. Ok, stuff happens. Betwen the little cash in my pocket, what was left on my card, and an advance, I should be ok. The next week came along, and the trip TO CA still didn't pay, and I had another "Balance Due". I called payroll again, just to get the same story. The following week, the same thing. I was hot by this time. Payroll offered to advance me $1000 on the trip, and I took it. I was flat broke and I had other bills to pay. The trip finally showed up the next week with a few other trips. After my $1000 advance, my pay for this trip and two others was $121. All the debt racked up over time.

The next few weeks was even harder as my truck was due for a PM and they discovered a cracked injector cup, costing me and my 2nd seat 4 days. I had requested Christmas to be at home, and my DM got me there. My last three trips paid me $16. I had no money left. In those 2 months I grossed over $17,000 and out of that I received about $1700 (including advances). In that 2 months I went 5 weeks without a paycheck, most of those weeks were consecutive. I was averaging 2500-3500 miles a week, nearly 4500 with my 2nd seat.

I recently was able to access my last pay stub. I am now in debt nearly $10,000 to this company. Over $3700 is alleged "interior repairs." Other than a little dirty, the interior was fine when parked the truck. Seats were good, everything worked but the A/C (warranty repaired 2 weeks prior).

The only thing I could come up with as to why I went so many weeks without pay (especially the trip TO california) is that there's some crafty, dirty accounting going on somewhere. I dare say that the reason they held onto that one week so long was to show me that if I want to make money then I had to put the truck first and the family last. It was my punishment for taking the time to handle a legal issue with my 10-yr-old daughter. That one week led to a s****.> There are some sucess stories out there. Without someone somewhere actually making a living while paying the leasing dept $459 a week + $0.14 a mile, they couldn't get away with the "Drive Life" thing. Many of these people don't go home for several months at a time. But the more and more I look and listen, the more I find others who are in this boat with me.

The miles are there. They will give you all the miles you want. They will run you as hard as you will let them. My DM was a good man, and I met many other wonderful people throughout my experience. But when it comes down to the almighty Dollar and the payroll dept., your're just a warm body in a seat and there's plenty more suckers out there.
