Replied to a possible employment opportunity on Craigslist with Accounting doing Data Processing and Budget.  Was contacted initially by a lisa.toops@yahoo.com aka Melissa Smith, Lisa Smith, Lisa Toops-Smith and was instructed to conduct an online interview with the Hiring Manager named Christine Donelly.  I was told I would have an online interview and to log on to yahoo messenger, add christinedonelly@yahoo.com.  I was giving a brief background of the company.  After some extensive questioning, I had to wait for a response as to if I was hired.  I then was informed that I was in fact hired and when I asked further about the company I was told that the website was bhlighting.com however, the website was under construction.  I was instructed to report online via yahoo messenger daily at 9am EST and report to Christine.  I then was given various tasks to complete daily and submit to her via email.  I received an "official check" to be deposited into my account to go and purchase the appropriate software needed to conduct my daily duties.  I was weary of this so when the check arrived, I tried calling the bank printed on the check TD Bank yet they would not verify that the account was legit.  I then reserached the routing number on the check and it was an invalid/old routing number for TD Bank.  I then phoned the company B&H Electric and Supply and was informed that they were NOT hiring and that I was the second person in a three week span that called questioning the above actions.  I reported the info to TD Bank, fraud department, FBI and the Federal Trade Commission.  Whoever these people are they are trying to act as if they are an entity of B&H Electric and they are not.  I saved the check in addition to all the correspondence with the individuals.  Once I confronted the individual, they got defensive and then ended contact with me. Go figure.

Easy way to spot the scam.

One  common denominator in just about all of these work at home scams is the email address.   Real companies do not use throwaway email addresses from yahoo.com, hotmail.com etc...  for their corporate communications.   They use their own corporate domain for email.

If you ignore job offers from throw away email addresses, you'll avoid 90% of the scams right off the bat.

In this interview, if either of you gave them your SS#, talked about where you were born etc.. You should be looking for and paying for identity theft help.

Check ftc.gov for suggestions of valid ID Theft Protection companies.

To all of those who look on Craigslist for employment, I just went through a lenghtly interview for a company that said they were based out of Austin, TX.  I tried to research the company while completing the interview.  I saw this notification regarding the company.  I too went through the same interview process as the other person.  The only difference is the person that I needed to contact was a Cynthia Powel, she had me complete a task today, stated that there would be a check sent via FedEx so that I could purchase software that was needed for me to complete my orientation along with my everyday task and that I needed to be online via yahoo messenger by 9am Eastern Standard Time. At that point I would receive daily instructions and task, Iwould have to report to my Supervisior via IM Yahoo.  Please beware of this company, it is a shame with the way the economy is today that such people would take advantage of honest hard working people who are looking for a steady income.  If they could use the creative way in a positive nature there would be so much work for those of us that really need it.
