Creation Books is a publishing house that was founded in the United Kingdom in 1989 and is now operated as a criminal fraud enterprise out of Bangkok, Thailand, by a British citizen named James Williamson. Although the company appears to have functioned as a legitimate business entity with several employees for some years, for roughly a decade it has been run by Williamson alone as a means by which to criminally defraud authors throughout the English-speaking world. The bulk of Williamson's business model for Creation Books has been to sign book contracts with authors living in the United States or United Kingdom; pay them a modest advance on future book sales; publish, distribute and sell their books; then ignore the terms of their contracts and never pay them anything again. Using the internet, Williamson has been able to accept payments worldwide via services like PayPal, while distributing Creation Books titles through legitimate distribution channels in the US and UK (both traditional brick-and-mortar distributors and online sales channels like Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk). A year or two after publication, when Creation Books authors eventually realize that they are being ripped offseeing their books sell well and receiving no percentage of annual royalties per the terms of their contractsthey soon also realize that they have no legal recourse available to them, as Williamson (who maintains the faade that his business is based in the UK or US) skirts legal arbitration by remaining in Thailand and out of the reach of British and American courts.

As the books published by Creation are of a fringe, "underground" nature, the sums of money owed to authors tend not to be substantial enough to justify an author going to all the trouble and expense of hiring an attorney and attempting to pursue remuneration through the American or British legal system (neither of which is capable of pursuing Williamson in Thailand anyway). Williamson has counted on all of this as a part of his business model for Creation Books and its various sub-imprints - he rips authors off enough to make a healthy living, but not enough to justify their devoting the requisite time and money to go after him. Most authors spend a year or two arguing in circles with Williamson via email, demanding payment, threatening to sue - and then eventually give up, realizing that the effort required to go after the monies they are owed exceeds anything that they might eventually get out of Williamson in a best-case scenario.

Williamson has succeeded in repeating this process for over a decade nowusing as many as 14 different publishing D.B.A.swith each author simply assuming that their intractable "contract dispute" with Creation Books is an isolated case and that the company is otherwise a legitimate business. This, coupled with the fact thatlike many crime victims, the criminally defrauded tend to keep their victimization to themselves rather than broadcast ithas allowed Williamson to illegally take in hundreds of thousands of dollars over the course of the last decade. It was not until 2011when one of Williamson's defrauded victims finally began contacting other authors online and gathering evidence of criminal fraudthat any of those ripped off by Creation Books realized that they were but one of many in a long chain of international victims of calculated intellectual property theft.
