I purchased my vehicle in May 2010. I had some ongoing issues with identity theft so the only financing I could get was through CAC. I knew the interest rate would be awful, but I had to deal with it anyway. The dealership I bought it from said that I had to get the warranty with the car but when I sell the car the warranty would transfer with it (which CAC told me later it doesn't but that's a whole new argument..fyi you can). I only planned on keeping the car a year and a half max.

Fast forward to a year and a half later (now - Wednesday Nov 2nd) I'm selling the car. I got my 10 day payoff and it was $6017.44. Got the money to payoff the car so I could get the title. I called CAC to pay the balance off and they told me I had to make smaller payments because they can't do anything over $2,500. I also had to pay a $6.50 finance charge for each transaction (which is ridiculous). So I did a payment for $2,500, another for $2,000 and the last payment didn't go through because my bank apparently limits the amount you can charge per day (no big deal, I get that). The woman told me my remaining payoff balance was $1517.44. After getting off the phone, my fiance reminded me that since I only kept the car for 18 months out of the 45 month loan, I should get money taken off if I cancel the gap insurance. So I called back the company a few minutes later and the woman told me that yes it would take off money from the balance and she gave me the information to do it. She also said to call back in a few hours to verify the warranty department got my cancellation request. I called back, it never went through. The guy said it can take anywhere from 24-72hrs.

I waited til the next day and checked the automated menu and it said my balance was $1513.64. I thought it was odd how it went down a few dollars, so I waited til Friday (Nov 4th) and called back. The guy told me the balance was $1513.64 and I told him how I requested the gap insurance be taken off. He said it was. I told him that was impossible because the balance was only a few dollars less than what it was two days prior. He said he went back to Wednesday's transaction and he said my final payoff balance was $1697.78 and my gap insurance came off of that. I asked how much was taken off and he said $184.14. There are 2 things wrong with this. First - if you add up the amounts I previously paid plus the amount he says I supposedly had (the $1697.78), it doesn't even add up to my 10 day payoff amount. Second - I only had the car 18 out of 45 months, there is no way that I am only owed back $184.14 if the gap insurance is $499 and I had the car less than half the time. He told me the only thing he can do is send me the information so I could see for myself but it could take at least a week or more to receive. I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THIS! I SOLD THE CAR! So unfortunately I just paid the balance he said I owed (and paid the stupid $6.50 charge to do so) and took down all the info I could to straighten this out later. I needed the title and couldn't keep pushing it back.

I had a few more questions and called back 20 minutes later. The woman told me I had an outstanding balance of $1.74. I told her that was impossible because I just paid the balance off. She said it was probably from the interest I accumulated in the past few days. I told her that doesn't make any sense because I just paid the balance 20 minutes prior. She told me I didn't and that I paid $1511.90 and not $1513.64. I told her that when I called 20 minutes before that I told the guy I wanted to pay the entire balance! She then said that the auditors probably aren't going to make a big deal about the $1.74 and that it won't hold up getting the title. I told her that it needs to get removed because I can't have it holding me up. And if I do end up paying the $1.74 I'm not paying the $6.50 charge to do it because it's not my fault the other rep messed up. I also started asking her more questions about the gap insurance and all she could say was "I don't know how everything works, I'm just customer service. We just e-mail to the auditors."... WHAT?? You don't know? Great. She then said that it was a preliminary audit and it could take up to 2 weeks to finalize everything and I could possibly get a refund then.

So now here I am. Stuck with a stupid balance of $1.74 wondering if it's even going to go through. Everytime I try to speak to someone more important, they just say they only e-mail to whatever department I try to reach. I'm extremely frustrated. It is ridiculous how many issues I'm having just because I need to pay off the car! I will wait two weeks, if I am still showing a balance or even a finance charge on the balance I am going to freak out. And I better receive the proper refund for the gap insurance as well. Not like they would care, but I do plan on reporting to the BBB as well. I will NEVER deal with this company again and encourage everyone else not to either!

My advice to you

Having dealt with CAC twice now, once for a car I purchased from the dealership and a car I purchased from a family member (where CAC was the lien holder) I can tell you your best option is sending a certified letter. You can type these up yourself through Microsoft Office. If that doesn't work, your only other option is to contact an attorney. Sadly, those are the only 2 ways to get them to do their job. You have been quite lucky so far. It took myself and the dealership 6 faxes to the warranty department, a certified letter, and an attorney to get it cancelled and refunded, and I paid my car off within 2 weeks of purchasing it, with the money from my home equity loan. Good Luck!
