Littleton Coin Co. advertises widely via credit card bill envelopes that it will send you a 2003 silver dollar "at their cost." It provides a coupon to fill out and return but the coupon does not say anything about a "coins-on-approval" service and so when the unsuspecting customer fills in the coupon with credit card information and sends it back, he or she is not provided adequate notice of that service.

When the customer gets the 2003 coin, he or she gets a 2001 and 2002 silver dollar as well. Later on, the coin company sends out a bill demanding payment for the two coins at well above the price paid for the 2003 coin -- more than double.

The "coins-on-approval" service is mentioned once on another part of the credit card bill envelope. This practice is so misleading and/or deceptive that it amounts to fraud by trick or device -- and it is mail fraud into the bargain.

Postal regulations allow customers to keep unsolicited goods without making payment for them. Buyers who use the Littleton Coin Co. coupon should beware of this company's shoddy practice and either specify ON THE COUPON that they do not want other coins or, if they do get the extra coins, keep them without paying for them on the grounds that fraud in the inducement was involved.

NO Rip-Off

AUTHOR: Jeff in Naples FL - (United States of America)

POSTED: Monday, March 04, 2013

I recently ordered a great special deal from Littleton Coin Co. and didn't notice the "coins-on-approval" service, so when I got the "coins-on-approval" I first thought it was a massive mistake until I reviewed the entire order and found it correct.
I wasn't at all upset about the "coins-on-approval" service, that I wasn't expecting, because Littleton Coin Co. included a FREE return label and envelop to return them in if I didn't want them.

Ironically I had ordered the entire State Quarter series and National Park Quarter series (-2012 for less than the price of the quarters alone with free shipping), and found one of the quarters nicked, however one of the "coins-on-approval" was a duplicate of the exact quarter that I found nicked (what are the odds???), so I will be keeping the good quarter and returning the nicked one...

Littleton coin company complaint

AUTHOR: Colombo - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, November 21, 2012

Mr. Aloha, your brain is unzipped and your ignorance is showing.  Littleton Coin Company is probably the most reliable coin dealer in the country.  My only complaint would be that their coins are priced too high in comparison to other sources but they provide excellent service and do exactly as they say they will.

As for your coins on approval, it is customary for coin and stamp dealers to send coins and stamps on approval.  I'm sure you were provided with a return, postage paid envelope to return your coins.  As you did not return them by the deadline, they assumed you wanted to keep them.  Don't blame them for your own ignorance.  Somewhere, you must have indicated to them that you would accept coins on approval.  I order from the regularly and never get coins on approval.

You need to learn how things work in the area of coins and stamps and I think you owe Littleton Coin an apology because they are surely a trustworthy and reliable company to deal with.  People like you generally have a bad attitude in general and are always looking to blame someone else for their lack of knowledge.  A good example of ignorance displayed on a national scale was the recent presidential election if you get my drift.

Very Happy with Littleton Company

AUTHOR: GrayHawk - (United States of America)

POSTED: Sunday, November 18, 2012

Over the years I have ordered items from Littleton and I have to say I have always been treated with respect as well as truthfully.  When one is dealing with any company they must always read what they are signing.  That part is up to you.

They did business with my 13 year old Son

AUTHOR: AngryDad - (United States of America)

POSTED: Monday, May 07, 2012

Unknown to me, my 13 year old Son got some coins from them, they had no information about their 'coins on approval service' in that initial shipment or its documentation. Instead they sent a demand for a payment 60 days later for $28.95. I returned their 5 coins with delivery confirmation via the Post Office.

As any helpful father would do we went to a local coin dealer and bought the same 5 coins for him (that had been returned to Littleton) in excellent or better condition and sealed along with a computer print out for each one for $4.86 ($5.40 minus 10% for his sour experience with Littleton.)

I would not recommend them or their business practices and would even suggest that those positive responses listed here are from Littleton Company Employees.

Love it Worked for me

AUTHOR: moneyman2012 - (United States of America)

POSTED: Saturday, December 03, 2011

Love it Worked for me.  At first when i got my Coin's i was kinda mad.  I can see how you would think you got in some scam.

I did but i read everything and I was like this is cool they trust you with more coins if you don't want them you don't have to buy them.

You just put in a pre payed package and pop back in mail box you don't even need to walk in the house.

Open it look and if you know coins you know its a deal or not sometimes i don't want any of them.

Don't cost me anything its like getting pizza advertising coupons with all kinds of junk mail but this you can touch and get lucky.

I  have got some good coins worth alot more then i paid .

Like i said i can see how you or anyone one could get mad I did at first because all i ordered was 3 things and there was 3or4 more coins.

Then i seen a paper saying you will be billed this much and i was like no way . But i looked at it and read and then I liked what i was seeing i had 15 days with the coins.

If i liked them then i keep what i liked .

One more thing that was cool is the 15 days you got with the coins you can see what the coins are worth.

Now each month i get a package with money in it not just any money but collectible coins so its kinda cool you open it  if you don't like it just close it put back in your mail box and boom done.

Why is that a ripoff trust me at first i was thinking the same thing and if this month or next month you just don't have the money to buy any of what they send out they don't charge you once they get it back and open it and there are the coins. They just send one next month.

All you got to do is say stop sending them on there site i think or on the send back package in mail but I Love it  PS just sold a coin i got in the mail 55$ i paid 9bucks for it to a coin shop. So there's one more good thing I didn't want to  sell it but it help me with more next mont.

If you read this as you can see i don't wright much or at all i just seen this and just wanted to throw my two cents in lol cents

Littletons Coin policy

AUTHOR: King Leo - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, March 04, 2008

I have bought several coins from this company with no problems. They do have a policy to attract new customers by giving them a discount on the first coins purchased.

Even if you were not aware of thier coins on approval policy, you are under no obligation to buy any of them and they provide a postage paid return envelope so it cost you nothing to look at them. You have usually 30 days to make up your mind before you are charged.

I believe that it is worthwhile to get the discount and then the final decision is up to you about what to do. After all you can cancel at any time with no obligation on your part.

Good Luck So Far w/ Littleton:)

AUTHOR: Jay - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, July 10, 2007

I have been a customer of Littleton for several years now and never had a problem with them. When I have had concerns or issues with something that they have sent to me, a phone call and five minutes of my time is all it has taken to resolve it. I've found their customer service reps. to be some of the best that I've dealt with in a very long time. The reps. are not afraid to let you know that they do not have all of the anwers, but they will find the person with the answer and put you in contact with you--my experience has been that they have someone call me back to address my issue or concern the same day.

Everything that I have purchased from them has appraised for what I've paid or more on several ocassions.

Overall, I would recommend Littleton to anyone who understands an approval service, whether it be coins, stamps, or other goods/services.

I would caution those who purchase anything from the envelope of a bill, credit card or otherwise, to check over the ENTIRE envelope for the "fine print." The advertiser is purchasing the ENTIRE envelope for marketing purposes and I don't think that Littleton is anymore out-of-line than any other company or organization that has "fine print" connectec to their advertising:)

I'm sorry that you had a bad experience with Littleton and I sincerely hope that you are the exception to the rule!!

Littleton's OK with me

AUTHOR: Nino - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, November 07, 2003

I have received and responded to the ads in credit card envelopes and magazines to Littleton's coin offers. I have to admit when I first did it I was surprised to get the "extra" coins. But being "wise" to advertising gimicks , I just wrote a note on the return paperwork telling them I was not interested in the "extra" coins and sent them back.

I have never had a problem with Littleton concerning the "Coins on approval". I receive what I order in great shape, and just return the rest. End of story...Bada Bing Bada Boom. If you do what they ask, you'll have no problems.

Avoid being Ripped off!

AUTHOR: Jessica - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 04, 2003

Being a coin dealer I'm can not say anything bad about Littleton. But customers must keep in mind Littleton is a big company with lots of expenses. I think sending the coins out to consumers at the chance of not being paid for them to be an expensive risk.

As a dealer we get many customers that once did business with Littleton. This info may be hard for collectors to swallow. We have found that many collectors don't read about their hobby and are taken advantage of. Litton's grading of coins is right on target but not all companies are quite as honest. Some companies charge 2-3 times more than a coins value is really worth.

If you fail to look around and see what is out there then you are an easy target. When it comes to collecting knowledge is very powerful. So go sign up for a coin magazine.

Please!

Actual wording used in Littleton mailer

AUTHOR: Charlotte - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, October 10, 2003

This is the actual wording used on the mailer I received about the 4-Coin set of Uncirculated Kennedy Halfs and Sacagawea Dollars:

"4 Official 2003 coins never released for Circulation!

History was made when the U.S. Mint did not release the official 2003 Kennedy half dollars and Sacagawea dollars for circulation! Struck for collectors only, these popular Kennedy halfs and "golden" dollars were quickly snapped up!

...You'll also receive our fully illustrated catalog, with other fascinating selections from our Free Examination Coins-on-Approval Service, from which you may purchase any or none-return balance in 15 days-with option to cancel at any time."

I checked the U.S. Mint site and it does offer both the Kennedy Halfs and the Sacagawea Dollars in individual rolls (Philadelphia Mint and Denver Mint). So, technically speaking, although the U.S. Mint does still offer the coins for circulation (in rolls), they didn't offer them as a set as Littleton does.

Additionally, on the order form, there was not a box or space to opt out of receiving the Coins-on-Approval Service.

I guess it's up to the buyer to be diligent in cancelling the service if they do not wish to receive anymore coins from the service.

I hope this clarifies the issues.

They ripped me off

AUTHOR: Jimmy - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, March 18, 2003

I got caught up in this. I returned these extra coins which I did not request, and they said they did not recieve them. Next time I got an offer from them, I also conviently did not receive the coins they sent. This is a crappy way to do business.

Satisfied Customer says Littleton always discloses its coin on approval program.

AUTHOR: Lee - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, March 07, 2003

My suggestion is that the disclosure should appear on the order coupon since this is the piece of paper any party to the transaction can reasonably be presumed to have read and understood, whereas disclosures placed elsewhere are not necessarily reasonably subject to such a presumption.

Satisfied Customer

AUTHOR: Nick - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, March 05, 2003

I have used Littleton Coin co for more than 30 years. Never have I seen a single advertisment that failed to mention that the company was making the offers as part of a coins on approval service. Again I say NEVER. They have a sister company that also does stamps on approval and likewise the advertising is honest and direct. Yes there may be enticing language..but never fraud. They are not some new company either....So pay for the coins.OR.send them back ..but don't cry fraud.
