They contacted me to collect a delinquent cable bill, which was for a person who has a name similar to mine, but lives in a town thirty five miles from where I live. I explained this to them, and they seemed to get it. I do not now, nor did I during the time in question, have an account with the company. We explained that we have lived at our current address for five years. The debt they are trying to collect - a cable bill - was incurred during the summer and fall of 2013. It was a residential cable bill.

We explained to these goons that we did not even live in the town in question, and that we had been at our current address for more than five years. So... unless we had maintained a second residence in a small town located thirty five miles from our home.... the bill obviously wasn't ours. They simply had the wrong folks.

They said they understood, and that the error would be corrected. We have discovered what "correcting" it means to them:

We intend to file a complaint this week, with the State Attorney General's Consumer Fraaud Division. But isn't it sad that folks must resort to this in order to protect themselves from unscrupulous thugs who make their living by preying on others in the hope that they's just Pay-Up to avoid the hassel of dealing with a collection company's malice?

Well, this time, they've bit an old dog who will do everything he can to bite back!
