My family and I are currently staying in a hotel after moving back here from Kansas after ten years of being gone from home. We bought a 1996 Red Cherokee Jeep with 72K original miles, two owners, a sixteen point inspection, Carfax, and an A rating from the BBB from Crencor for $5000 plus $860 dealer prep and taxes on Thursday 20 of June. Because of these credentials we were willing to pay $1000 over the bluebook value to get a reliable car. My daughter and I drove the car the following Sunday to look for a rental house in the Nashville area. The car began to overheat and the air-conditioning started blowing warm air then something that seemed like mud started spewing from the overflow.

We took the car back to Crencor that Monday and told them about the problem and how hot the car was running. They told me that every used car overheats on a hot day and said their car had done the same thing that morning. They then said that I should just pull it over every time it overheats to cool down. They started the car up and said nothing was wrong with it. I was told again that all of their cars had a sixteen point inspection. They kept the car for two days to have it checked out. On Wednesday around 5 p.m. when we picked the Jeep up I was told they drove it for three hours with a temperature gauge and it never overheated.

I asked that if there is nothing wrong with the vehicle or that it is not a quality car if I could trade it in for another vehicle for the same price or pay the difference on a more expensive one. They said that there was nothing wrong with the car and that they will not take it back. After that, it turned out to be running even worse and idling very heavily.

The next morning on Thursday, we took the Jeep to the Jeep dealership because it was still overheating in addition to the heavy idling. After having the car for two and a half days with two different certified mechanics inspect it, we were told that the mud like liquid was stop leak, so much of it that it had completely clogged up the radiator, coils and cooling system.
The written inspection from Bob Frensley Jeep Service Center read:
C/S VEHICLE OVERHEATING WHILE DRIVING. STATES POSSIBLE STOP LEAK IN SYSTEM. RECENTLY PURCHASED.
ADVICE ON REPAIR INSPECTED VEHICLE, CONFIRM OVERHEATING. FOUND COOLING SYSTEM STOPPED UP. WOULD NEED SYSTEM FLUSHED WITH POSSIBLE RADIATOR REPLACEMENT, POSSIBLE HEAD GASKET DAMAGE AS OF RESULT.

They said that they felt sorry for me and didn't even charge for the two certified inspections and the written report mentioned above and to take the car back. The manager told me to contact the attorney general if they did not take it back. The cost for the repair could range from $2K-$4K and they are not sure that there would not be more problems once into the engine. That would be possibly over $10,000 into this vehicle which is a 1996 which the bluebook value is around $4000. The Jeep dealership said that if Crencor did a sixteen point inspection, they would have known that it was damaged as such.

I do not have enough money left to do the repairs on the car or buy another vehicle. I am a single mother who has to draw Social Security Disability, have two teen-aged children (one of which is autistic), and two small dogs. We cannot look for an apartment or house in the Nashville area until we have a dependable vehicle, therefore we are staying in a hotel room that costs $290/week. My daughter has to walk past Crencor every day just to get to her job which is one and a half miles from the hotel. She has two titanium rods and twenty six screws in her back at a cost of two and a half million dollars by the Shriner's Childrens' Hospital in St. Louis. This entire situation has been a travesty for us since we are struggling to make a new life here in Nashville, TN especially after having to be in Kansas for ten years.
