I had a landscaping project, wanting to remove 6 large stumps, 8 small stumps and move some dirt from our side yard.  I called Crenshaw Landscaping to make an appointment with someone to come out and look at my project.  Randy Crenshaw, owner, came out and I explained to him what I needed done. He called me back a few days later with a price of $2,300.00 and I asked him when could he start.  Start date was set up for the 16th of June, with the project being completed on the 18th of June.  On the 16th of June, the tractor operator showed up to start moving dirt away from the stumps.  This tractor barely had enough power to move the dirt around, much less pull out the stumps.  I was hoping that he had a back h*e for the tractor to dig out the stumps, but no such luck.  The guys were trying to dig out the stumps by hand.  Right away I knew I was in trouble.  When they realized that they were not going to be able to pull out the stumps, they decided to cut down the stumps, as low as they could to the ground, drill holes into the stumps, fill the holes with fertilizer and cover them with dirt to help rot out the stump.  Finally, on the 8th day of the project, the whole crew showed up early in the morning and started to work.  The guy with the tractor starts leveling the dirt around, one tree stump is still in the path of were I want to put a retaining wall and two guys are starting to put up the black rock for part of the retaining wall.  They all seem to be in a very big hurry to get out of Dodge.

I get a knock on the front door and it is Randy, the owner. telling me that they are all done and he gives me a invoice.  Now, we had agreed upon $2,300.00 for this project.  I had given him a $1,00.00 check for a deposit before he started.  I had made one  minor change to the project, which we had agreed upon.  HE GIVES ME A INVOICE FOR ANOTHER $2,200.0 and I tell him I will mail him a check and I go back into the house.   A few minutes later there is another knock on the door and he asks me if I can right him a check and I tell him no, because this was not the amount we agreed upon.  He tells me that he has to pay his workers and the tractor guy, so we agree on another $1,715.00 and I write him a check and he is gone.  About an hour later I go out into the area they were working in and I am finding all kinds of rots, pieces of wood, large boulders and chunks of concrete still in the yard and the area I want to put up a retaining wall, still has the stump in it.  I tried to find some reviews about the landscaping business before I hired them and I was not able to find any reviews, either good or bad.  They are on Facebook and most of the comments are okay, but mostly for lawn care and maintenance.   I think they were in over their head on this project and they should stick to mowing lawn.

He deliberately did not send an email, I asked him to for a written agreement on the changes he requested. The price for the job was completely agreed on. There were no surprises in the bill. I was unable to remove 4 of the 14 stumps and this was due to my tractor not being big enough. First time it's happened. We didn't hide what we did. He wanted a parking pad in that area so we cut those stumps down below ground level and backfilled the entire area.

Once again client was aware. His"small changes" were a lazy rock wall, four additional stumps, and around 200 square feet of leveling with a tractor. The original amount was 2300$ and we verbally agreed to another 1200$ for the other work. All of our prices do not include sales tax. He was supposed to pay half up front but only sent a check for 1,000$. I knew he wasn't happy about the four left over stumps so I took the invoice down to the 3200$ after tax. He smiled and thanked me and told me he would mail a check. Which didn't make sense and I was already worried considering he didn't make a full deposit and didn't want to have a written agreement on the changes.

When I asked for the check now he gave me the speech about the other stumps not being all the way gone. I saw what was going on and got the most I could from him. He paid around 2700$ for the removal of 10 stumps, 25 hours of tractor work. 75 hours of labor. 4 yards of basalt stone, and four yards of gravel. As far as the comment about the stump being in the way of the wall he was going to build. It was a root that he was going to have to build his wall around that was in the way about four inches.

I've never had a tractor rough level an area and there not be some debris on the surface. I doubt there was a huge boulder but I might have missed it after the payment situation. I honestly don't know. Finding out you just lost a thousand dollars and put in all your hours for free can do that to you. It definitely was not a middle finger at him for not paying what we agreed upon. We currently work with TransBlue out of Everette, PUD#1 in Shelton, Denny's in Shelton, Our community credit union in Shelton, Red lion hotel in Olympia, 20 residential maintenance contracts, and we average around 30 landscaping build projects yearly. Sometimes jobs don't work out and we bend over backwards to at least find a common ground and an agreeable solution. Just like we did here. Out of the thousand jobs we've done since we've started this is the only negative review online that we have had. Randy Crenshaw Sr. Owner 360-229-6398
