We bought a Cub Cadet in 2005 because we were told they were "built tough" and would withstand alot. Well, it has been in the 'repair' shop more than what we have used it. We have just barely over 100 hours on the derned thing, the spindle keeps breaking and they are telling us it's because we run over "twigs" and uneven ground, so therefore they will NOT honor the warrnaty. It has been in the shop so many times and we have had to pay so many times for it to be repaired. PLUS, they are saying it has the wrong bolt in it, thus causing it not to "float" on the ground, but Elberta Hardware, in Elberta, Alabama are the ONLY ones that have done anything to it. Every time we take it in, we are accused of "tampering" with it. But we don't cuz we don't have a clue what to do to it to fix it. The man at Elberta Hardware even got in my husbands face, and cursed him out when he took it back there this last time. DO NOT BUY A CUB CADET mower!!! They are NOT BUILT TOUGH. We had a Kubota and they stood behind their warranty and cut the same area and we NEVER HAD a spindle problem with them. We did have just a month or so with the Cub Cadet after we bought it. DO NOT BUY A CUB CADET. They will not stand behind their product!!!

Cub Cadet experience

AUTHOR: Bamapanda - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, May 01, 2009

I have been in the retail and wholesale business all my life, and the experience quoted herein seems to be attributable with how attentive (not) the selling dealer is.

Apparently there is either a bad dealer involved in this situation or a lot of mis-communication. I have before and still do see a lot of mis-communication.

Personally I have a 2166 Cub Cadet tractor/mower with well over 175 hrs. Never a moments trouble, and it is used on pretty rough ground, and chews up a lot of twigs to good sized sticks that I miss from time to time.

My mower is not the Cub version that is sold in Home Depot, though. Pretty sure it may be a bit tougher than the norm, having a thicker deck, shaft drive ..etc.

Kabota was mentioned. With the xtra $$ one would pay for that machine, I am sure that it would be a tougher unit than the Home Depot variety. That said, I would prefer a Cub from HD, than most of the other machines that are offered at that price point.

The easiest way to see if you have hit something....

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

Look at the cutting blade. If there are dings in the cutting edge, they were caused by hitting objects other than grass. If the blade is relatively smooth but simply dull, then the repairman is lying to you.

Your biggest problem is with the dealer.

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

As for repairing spindles, they do not just "fail".

No one wants to admit they hit objects.
I had a customer lie to my face while I had his mower deck with the HAMMERED/DESTROYED blades facing him telling me he never hit anything as I pointed them out to him.

And he kept insisting he never hit anything. Yet, he broke a spindle housing - which is actually pretty tough - as well as bent the spindle shaft, destroyed the pulley, and wiped the "star" mount for the blade off the spindle shaft.

Needless to say....hitting anything and doing damage is not warranty.

ANY manufacturer will tell you the same thing. Cut at a higher setting.
The dealer getting in someone's face is between you and the dealer - not Cub Cadet/MTD.

Everyone has different luck with different manufacturer's machines.

I have a customer who admittedly hits objects and did so with their Kubota and THAT was in the shop all the time for the same thing you are complaining about. They got rid of that machine and bought a Husqvarna that is nothing but an orange Sears and had no problems with that.
