Here is my statement for the rental water softener unit from Culligan:
After more than three years contract, I noticed my water bills are high since last June 2009.
I couldn't figure the source of problem out.
I changed every possible item associated with water loss, and the bills were remained high.
I though my piping is broken from under the foundation.
I bypassed the water softener unit in Jan, and a few months later noticed my water bill backed to normal.
I called culligan about this, and they sent a technician to fix the problem, although I told them: despite sending your technician, you are responsible, and should consider this notice as a one month advance notice for water softener removal.
the technician said the unit is too old, and do not have back up memory, so it comes back to the original setting, and more often generation, and more water loss!!!!!
culligan never tried to compensate the loss, and not even a rebate, and was sending us monthly bill, one after another.

I received another bill, so I called the head office, which has never been in the same region as they use Voice over IP, and they said you didn't give us 30 days notice.
I paid that bill again, and said this is the last one.
another technician came to remove the water softener unit apparently and noticed the salt container is full of salt, as the unit never used salt, and also noticed the unit is passing water continuously. so obviously he walked away, and told me the service department will resolve the problem with you.
the service department called and agreed to offer 12 months free rent with 12 months additional contract upon broken unit replacement.
here is the strange part.
I told them, make sure the unit is  brand new [in the box], as I consider buying that unit. the service manager said these units are all refurbished.
Here I noticed the unit that I took over a few years ago for about $32/month was refurbished too.
long statement short, we postponed the go ahead order to thick about that.
when we called them back they denied the compensation, and only cared about how to remove the unit from the house!!!
they even refused to install the reverse osmosis unit [which we signed another contract a few weeks before-we put a note that we sign this contract upon water softener unit replacement], as they should come more often to replace the filters, due to lack of water softener unit.
since then people from service department pop in without notice, legal paperwork as clause 17 contract.
so we don't know what are they doing?
we can't let the unit go, as we paid for salt, few moths without using it.
we can't let the unit go as they don't give us any paperwork, and they may charge us later on.
Culligan knows she is at fault, but trying to remove they unit, so can remove the source in very smart way.
we filed a claim with Media, and waiting for culligan' next move.
we hope you learn from this statement, not to deal with this company, as the sales people don't even know what chemical they are using for water testing [hardness].
there is no chemical name on the bottles that they use but hardness solution, saying every drop means 1 ppm [part per million]..!!!
when they want to sign contract wit you, they come from doors, windows.. with lots of paperwork, when they want remove the unit, you don't see any of them, don't get written notice, and they don't even return you calls, or emails [of course you are lucky if you have their email].
