I have a 99 SLT 5.2 4x4. My 1999 Forest Green Durango was damaged yesterday morning at 3:40 am on my way to work. I was going down a steep dry hill (one hill I travel everyday), the road was dry and when I went to turn right on the street close near the bottom of it...STEERING WHEEL WOULDN'T BUDGE! And sickening to say, my Beautiful Durango ends up in a ditch hitting head-on a very large boulder. Bye Bye to my nerf safari bar and hella black magic fog lights, not to mention the front end. Since I was going down a hill, I guess I panicked alittle bit and stepped on the brakes to avoid the ditch. The brakes locked and took me straight into the ditch. Heck, we took pictures and everything....the skid marks are long and straight. I had my AAA tow it to the Dodge Dealer from the scene. When I called the dealer to let them know that the steering failed, I got the feeling they are not going to take blame for this accident.
Unfortunately, my durango has had many, many problems. Engine kept overheating and on the 4th visit to the dealer; had the head, cylinder and gasket replaced from an internal leak, also had spark plugs rewired, power window motor replaced, fog lamp replaced d/t moisture inside the lens, and annoying and continuing rattle in the upper right corner of the dashboard, she shifts hard, runs high rpms and has loose seats. But I was a die heart for my Durnago. Well, now i'm scared....big time of it! Don't know what happened to the steering...not a mechanic. It felt like the power steering vanished and i did not have the muscle to turn it. I hope to God this does not happen to someone else. One thing more to add is that I have been having trouble with the steering since last march. When I first start it up in the morning or after she it for a few hours the steering is "hard" to turn...kinda have to force it (feels like manual steering instead of power steering) and it will turn but with alot of effort on my part. After a few miles she steers just fine. Noticed it getting worse lately and taking longer to "warm" up. Took her into the dealer back in March last yr and they were unable to "duplicate the problem". I have continued complaining about the steering and the "rattle" but they can't seem to find anything wrong. The steering does not do this in warm weather and also is unpredictable when it does descide to go stiff".
I have had more things go wrong with my durango its unbeliveable. I know the repair guys by their first name. I did attempt to "lemon" my Durnago, but lost is arbitration last august. My problem then was, she kept overheating. On the 4th visit to the dealer on that problem, it was fixed! Major engine repair....and i payed how much for this durango??? I service my durango every 3000 miles with the dealer and i have the 75,000 mile extended warrenty...one postive note! My durango sure has been in the repair shop more than the average. Have to admit that the service department has been very kind and patient with me, but i think things are about to change now that i could have been killed with this last complaint.
Anyone out there have problems with their steering?????

Recall? be careful, or at least talk to an attorney first

AUTHOR: Douglas - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, April 05, 2006

When I saw this report I remembered that my aunt had a 2000 Durango and I'm pretty sure that she had her vehicle in the shop at one point for a couple of recalls, though I can't remember what they were for.

If you go to Dodge's main site and select owner services from the top menu, they have a recall notification system available.

I distinctly remember tons of people had problems with the steering on these models (i owned a 2000 Ram) and wonder if a recall was ever issued for this issue.

You guys with problems should check, because if there was such a recall, the repairs should be free and if I'm not mistaken, you can get reimbursed if you already paid for the covered work to be done.

Now that I think about it, the original poster probably shouldn't check the site though. If there was a recall for her problem one on her vehicle, she may be found responsible for the accident...She should be careful, or at least talk to an attorney first.

durango steering failure

AUTHOR: Gordon - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, April 04, 2006

My 2000 durango steering failed while I was pulling a boat on a winding road and I almost wrecked no warning at all. I had to replace the power steering pump the shaft on the pump was broke in half. If a woman ws driving some one could of wrecked or worst yet killed. This vehicle has had numerous problems leaking soft plugs in the motor, front wheel bearings, tie rods, u-joints, rear-end, front brakes/rotors, shocks, belt tensioner, clutch fan, themostat, ball joints. I have had dodge products for years and will never buy another one. I consider it junk and it has been for sale for months now.

another 2001 Durango Power Steering Failure

AUTHOR: Danny - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, August 16, 2004

Last Friday, August 13th, my wife was turning right to our driveway, she pulled the steering all the way to the right and when she's trying to make the front wheels straight the steering failed. I checked the fluid and any leaks did not find any obvious problem. I took it to Framingham Dodge and they said it was power steering pump it will cost $500+ to replace with remanufactured compare to the original part the pump alone quoted me for $600 plus labor.

1999 Dodge Durango - broken power steering pump

AUTHOR: Vikki - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, February 16, 2004

Well, it looks like Dodge has a problem with the power steering pumps in their Durangos. I also had a broken power steering pump in my 1999 Durango. It happened while backing out of a parking space. It was nothing that we did. It was a typical thing, backing up and turning the wheel and then it got too hard to turn. Luckily my father in law is a machanic so we just paid for the pump but still its something that shouldn't have happened and we got stuck with the bill. Also, my father in law had said, in his 40 years of working on vehicles, had never seen a pump break like that, on any vehicle.

I love my Durango but if you intent to buy one, ask them about the pump!

2000 Dodge Durango steering failed!!

AUTHOR: Jan - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, October 16, 2003

Just recently, on October 12, as I was backing out of a parking spot, my power steering in my 2000 Dodge Durango failed! It was all I could do to straighten the automobile out and drive it ot my home. I had to get my dad to drive it to a mechanic shop the next morning because it was impossible for me to turn the steering wheel. The mechanic found that the shaft in the power steering pump was completely broken (disengaged), so he replaced it at the tune of $200.00. When I picked it up and drove it home, just as I got close to my house, the power steering went stiff again. Back to the mechanic, he now finds that some line is messed up in the steering and the bill for the repair is going to be over $700.00, and he's cutting me a good deal because I know him!! He says the part alone is $500.00. I have driven many different types of vehicles and this is the worst problem I have ever encountered with a relatively newer model vehicle. I hate Dodge vehicles now and I will never buy another Dodge or a Chrylser product as long as I live. I feel like there should be a recall on "something" related to whatever makes the power steering fail in a Durango, because I can see by the numerous reports of it, that I am not the only victim!!

2001 Dodge Durango steering problem

AUTHOR: Chuck - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, April 05, 2003

I have a 2001 Dodge Durango with a steering problem. I noticed it was getting hard to steer as if the power steering fluid was low. I checked it and found the resivor to be full. Upon further investigation and the dealer checking my steering they found my steering colum to be worn.

My dealership replaced the "Worn colum" for a total of $1,054.34, also at the same time they found another part down inside that needs to be replaced for a total of $200.00 + which this part is on order.

My symptoms were hard to steer and a rattling noice when shaking the steering wheel fast to the left and right or turning. I called Daimler and they stated since there is no recall on this I have to pay the bill. This is sorry and unfair and unjust. My dealership worked with me to the best they could, I do have to commend them for this action. I feel the part was defective at factory installation and in time went bad and should be replaced by Diamler Chrysler since there are allot of the same problems with other individuals Durangos or Dakotas. Anyone else with the same problem speak out and let it be heard so we all can get this fixed before someone could be injured or killed in an accident due to faulty steering. Thanks
