I had gotten engaged to my fiance at the time, approximately one year ago. I was ecstatic to go and pick out my dress, and it was beautiful. The dress was approximately $600, so I put down $300 and put it on layaway. I asked for the terms and how the layaway works, and the woman told me that if I wanted to cancel anytime, I could. Simple as that. After that, I had just gotten a new phone number, and I got a whole bunch of calls (probably 3 per day, from wedding places and photographers) for which I had never signed up for. I only put my number down in case they had to call me about the layaway. Ridiculous.

So, about a week after I put the dress on layaway, my fiance had passed away during the whole wedding process. This was not expected whatsoever. I started cancelling the plans for the vendor, the catering, etc. Everyone else was so compassionate and understanding and gave me NO problems whatsoever.

So, during this hurtful time, I went over to David's Bridal and asked to take the dress off of layaway and explained what had happened. I was in tears. It was so hard for me.

The woman then explained that since I put down $300, that I would have to pick something else out from David's Bridal at that price. So basically, I couldn't get my money back that I had put down already. No one explained this to me. I got EXTREMELY upset (I mean, come on, after he died, that was the LAST PLACE I wanted to be). She told me to come back at a later time and it wouldn't be so hard to pick something out because I'd be less upset and there's a lot of things I could buy. Like what? Another wedding dress?! Then she told me that after I take it off of layaway, I have six months to buy something for that price. Like I planned on being married in six months and buying a wedding dress from them? It was ridiculous.

Then about a month later after his passing, they have the nerve to call my house and ask me how my wedding planning is going and if I was coming in for any bridesmaid dresses??? Are you kidding me? These people are very impersonal and EXTREMELY money hungry! They don't care what your circumstances are!

So Sorry For Your Loss

AUTHOR: jades_mom - (United States of America)

I read your post and was literally in tears. You see, I am an employee of David's Bridal, and your experience was just awful. We do allow for a cancellation of layway, (typically you lose 10% of the total price when it is canceled) but anything is up to a store manager or district manager's discresion. They have an "all sales are final" policy (we always have customers sign on the bottom of their receipt acknowledging it) but as I said, anything is up to corporate, on a case to case basis. The way you were treated was unfair and unkind, and definately NOT typical of the company (or at least not our store!). Calling you was another awful mistake. We always call our brides to ask how wedding plans are going and such, let them know if any bridesmaid dresses are going up in order times or being discontinued, etc. The person you origianally spoke with should have put some kind of comment or post under your name alerting your consultant to the situation. I realize my apology has no real meaning, but I feel as if I should say something.
