DR. Dawn Hargraves was recommended to me by a close friend. Apparently, she was only accepting referrals. And looking back on it, that should have been my first clue. Not that being able to choose your own clients is a bad thing, but the reason behind it could be. If you are that good that you can cherry pick who you want to work with, then that's a good thing. But when you're only doing it because of payment issues, that should raise a red flag. I was aware the she was having insurance issues, but I thought it was the provider rather than her billing practices.

She even told me that although she had problems getting paid by some insurers, mine wasn't one of them. That put my mind at ease, and I proceeded to get X-rays done for $150, a vertebrae adjustment for $65, and $150, $75, and $75 for three acupuncture sessions. She also talked me into massage therapy, and I ended up paying $45 for three sessions. All in all, the final bill came to $650. My insurance covered $400, and I was shocked to receive a bill for the remaining $250, especially after being told they would cover everything. This was hard to swallow as I'm only making $500 per week.

I live paycheck to paycheck and I'm not sure how I'll come up with that money. I have very little in savings, and I'm now worried that my account will get turned over to a collection agency. If that happens, I'll probably end up with bad credit. And if that happens, I might lose my job. I work in a call center for a major bank and they require that we have good credit. It makes us more of a risk if we can't pay our bills, so they run our credit periodically.

I'm now paronoid that I might get fired if they see a collection account on my credit report. This all could have been avoided if Dawn Hargraves had a better relationship with the insurance company. For whatever reason, they have a problem paying her claims. Now I have an even bigger problem with a bill I can't afford to pay. You do good work Dawn, and I have no issues with you as a chiropractor. But you need to get your act together with processing insurance claims.

Balance Billing

AUTHOR: Kat65 - (USA)

POSTED: Friday, March 13, 2015

Hi there - I just came across your report and wanted to respond.  I have done Insurance billing and collections for 18 years.  It sounds like the provider is doing what is called "Balance Billing", which, if she is a contracted provider for your insurance company, is completely illegal.  I suggest you contact your insurance company immediately to find out if she is in network with your insurance company, what your responsibility actually should be - if any, and if you find out she is contracted and your owed amount is less than the bill that was sent, file a fraud complaint with your state's Department of Insurance.  Be sure to document everything!
