1) 'Inherited' Dell Studio 1735 laptop when step sister 'busted' on multiple felony charges (heroin)

2) Changes to BIOS 'locked out' by password that I didn't know/sis didn't remember & called DEll 'Support'

3) First rep said he'd call me right back about 'work around' - NEVER CALLED BACK

4) Recalled Dell - next rep said 'since out of warranty have to transfer you back to dept I was still awiting call from

5) IMHO no way to run a business/treat a customer  AND WORSE they wanted to charge me !

6) All I needed was to know if pulling battery (mbd) would work or if I had to 'hack' a chip.

I'm almost 70, retired, patient etc. and they drove me nuts - IMHO DO NOT BUY DELL - product and support are WAY below industry standards (I build custom servers/PC's etc. so KNOW 'below' is being nice to DELL)

Unrealistic...

AUTHOR: Robert - (USA)

POSTED: Monday, March 14, 2016

First off, let me say that if they failed to call you back after they said they would then that is bad customer service.  However, there is a big jump from bad customer service to a RipOff...which this definatly is not.

Also, when you add "fluff" to your report to try and make your situation sound more sympathetic.  It often has the opposite effect.  A perfect example is your sister.  The reason she is in jail/prision has NO bearing on the issue you are having, so why even bring it up?

As it is very unrealistic to expect a company to still cover a computer out of warranty and having issues most likely due to user issues not manufacture issues. Especially when you figure that it has been out of warranty probably for at least several years.  As according to dell that computer was manufactured from 2008 to 2011, so at the very least you have a 5 year old computer and it could be as old as 8 years old.

Back to the "fluff".  You try and come off as you are some master builder who knows your way around a computer.  That may be so, but as a master builder one would expect that you know your way around the Internet as well.  After all the same question you say you spent all of this time on the phone for I found in about a 30 second search.  So the answer to your question...NO removing the battery will have zero effect in resetting the password.  So since your other option is to 'hack' the chip, since you seem to give every indication you know how to do that..well you better get 'hacking'.

As for quality, if the laptop is good except for the password.  A 5-8 year old laptop that still works, actually says quite a bit about their quality.  Which personally I find a bit surprising.  As when I have used them in the past getting 5 years out of a laptop would have been nothing short of a miracle..of course that was 15 or so years ago.
