I bought a Dell computer on February 10, 2004. The first fiasco was when they denied my $100 rebate. After three phone calls and finally reaching a "supervisor", they gave me Dell credit and no rebate. Then, yesterday, I tried to upload my website and my new computer won't let me access the ftp site. I spent an hour on the phone with my cable company isp trying to enter using DOS. Nothing worked. I called Dell and reached Mark who told me my software warranty was only for 30 days and I passed it five days ago. When I started crying (sorry, I was at the end of my rope), he offered to send me to a "supervisor". I told him to forget it. I had already gone the supervisor route the week before and I wasn't emotionally up for it. I'd figure out how to get that piece of crap computer fixed on my own.

I wish I had gotten ANY computer besides Dell. Their service is pitiful and I would happily dump it on their doorstep if I could. I've been buying PCs since the mid-eighties and never had these issues.

Please, please don't buy a Dell. You will be so sorry.

Dell enabled the Microsoft XP firewall before they shipped it

AUTHOR: Carolyn - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, March 19, 2004

Thank you, Nancy. The problem, it turns out, is Dell enabled the Microsoft XP firewall before they shipped it. McAfee was also installed on the computer. When my cable technician suggested I might want to disable the Microsoft firewall, everything worked fine. My issue was with Dell's service. Dell's own tech could have helped me straighten the issue out, and he could have informed me he was doing it as a favor since my software was only covered for 30 days.

Thanks for the ftp software tip. I'll check it out.

There are many freeware FTP programs online

AUTHOR: Nancy - (U.S.A.)

Carolyn, it sounds like Dell sent you a computer that has some shareware programs on it and not full version ones. Most shareware does expire after 30 days, if you don't pay to register it with the company that makes it. (This wouldn't be Dell.)

There are many freeware FTP programs online you can download. I normally go to http://www.tucows.com and download from there. They have a good sized selection of both shareware and freeware. I'm pretty sure you can find an FTP program there to your liking.
