Wow!  So obviously blatent in their attempt to make-up millions in the depleted CA debt!  I, like so many others, that receive their vehicle registration for 2011, have been a victim.  Just yesterday, 7/11/2011, I received my notice for payment....with a Late Penalty charge of #37!!  The statement had a Due Date of 7/02/2011, and I didn't even receive the bill until 7/11!  I called the DMV, and they had an hour wait until I could be able to talk with there a class action law suit pending?  What options do we have...this is America, right?

I am typing this response with some trepidation.  Since you obviously don't read the newspapers, watch tv, browse the web or read your mail I'm concerned that you won't read this response.  On May 4th the legislature ordered DMV to withhold the renewal notices for registration renewals 7/1 and after.  They wanted to either continue the vehicle license fee rates that the previous governor had implemented two years ago. Or increase the registration fee, or both.  And they had to do it at the beginning of the next fiscal year.

There was an insert in the envelope that contained your renewal notice explaining the late renewal notice.  This special notice also advised you that you have 30 days from the due date to pay the renewal fees without penalty. Inserts placed in envelopes from DMV aren't like the ones you would see in your credit card bill.  They contain valuable information that you should be aware of.

Finally, it is your responsibility to contact DMV prior to your expiration date if you do not receive your renewal notice.  If you would've contacted DMV before the expiration date, like so many others, you would've known why you didn't get your notice.  You would've also known that you would have a grace period that is not normally allowed when renewing registrations.

A class action lawsuit would only waste tax payers money, and make those that file it look pretty silly.
