Derek Burns is a classic example of a chronic liar and manipulator. The most effective manipulators of people lie by omission: they tell part of the truth, and omit certain key pieces of information. When they are caught in a lie, they plead ignorance, beg for forgiveness, and can often convince others they simply did not remember an impoftant piece of information.

Many effective manipulators refuse to be held accountable for their own actions. They always have reasonable sounding, sometimes compelling excuses to make themselves appear to be a victem of circumstance, who would never intentionally harm or decieve another person.

It is incredibly damaging, for instance, for a woman to meet a man who appears to be shy, socially inept innocent bystander, who by misfortune repeatedly becomes a victim of circumstance. When she later finds the man she thought to be a nice guy, with a good heart was not at all the person he appeared to be, it can be earth shattering.

Chronic manupulators like Derek are good at soliciting favors from friends and from women they have duped with their "nice guy" routine. Men like Derek often "find themselves" being taken care of by several women at once. Women who feel bad for them, and honestly believe the manipulator is a nice guy and a good person, who deserves assistance.

The chronic manipulator is often presented with expensive gifts, because they seem to deserve a break by the women they are victimizing, on the basis of who they present themselves to be. They are invited on all expenses paid trips, given loans or gifts of money when "bills are a little tight" that month, comped meals, and continue to play up their appeal: A nice guy, who earnestly appreciates everything this nice woman is willing to do for him, and that victimizer has never felt so strongly about.

The problems begin when the manipulator retains several women like this at the same time, and tells each the same story: that they are each his "best friend," that he's never met another woman who treated him the same way, and that the other woman in his life is simply a friend he has occasionally seen, but their intimate relationship is "in the past."

Manipulators like Derek Burns find it easy to tell different women the same stories, and leave out the same key information about the other women in their life, because they benefit financially and socially from it. They feel "cool" and accepted, and come across as genuinely appreciative to each woman.

Until the paths of both women cross, and the depth of the manipulator's deception is revealed. Even after, the manipulator will try to explain that they had the best intentions, and were again a victim of circumstance. They did not know what they were doing, did not even think about it, until they were in over their head. They were, again, innocent, caught between two different women, craving acceptance and and friendship. And gifts. And sex. And the feeling of being involved, valued, and special.
