dexter cruz, only had phone contact. no physical address mentioned. no e-mail or internet contact. PHONE CALL ONLY IRS scam Nationwide

On May 14, 2015 I had a recorded voice call on my landline.  Female voice identifying herself as Nicky Johnson said: 'I work for the IRS.  I need you or your attorney of record to call me regarding your tax return.'  The call-back number was 323-744-7158.  I called the number but nobody answered.  I called a second time and someone named 'Dexter Cruz' answered -  in a voice of indeterminate gender.  

I asked to speak to Nicky Johnson.  He said that Johnson was someone who worked for him.  He said he too worked for IRS.  I was immediately suspicious.  I asked if he were a contract employee of the IRS?  He asked why I inquired.  I said I was being naturally cautious.  Then I added that I was unsure how to address him because I wasn't sure of 'his' gender.  'Cruz' hung up.

I immediately went to a computer and Googled 'Dexter Cruz' and found a list of complaint sites for past suspected scams using that name.  There were a variety of attempts and various telephone numbers listed across the country. I called an IRS number to report what had happened and was reminded that a scam of this sort was a common occurrence.  The only advice I received was not to respond to any subsequent calls.
