I took my dog to Dickman Road Vet Clinic Tuesday morning for minor surgery. I picked him up from them Wednesday morning and he was fine. Except for the fact that he was covered in urine and they had to spend 20 minutes washing him off before I could take him with me. No big deal I guess, even though it is totally not like him to mess himself. I brought him home and made him comfortable in our air conditioned house. I ran out to do a couple of errands and was gone for about 1.5 hours. I came back to my dog seizing very intensely. He was foaming at the mouth and convulsing horribly. I immediately called the vet and rushed him back there. He had a fever of 110 degrees. They put him in a cool bath and gave him a Valium drip. I asked if this could be a direct result of the surgery or anesthesia. They adamantly denied that that was the case. I have since found out that it very well was probably the result of surgery. Too much of a coincidence to have a perfectly fine dog, before surgery, to having one in this state the day after for me.
So, we are sitting in the exam room and my 11 and 12 year old daughters are sitting on the floor bawling, wondering if their beloved dog is dying. That's when Doctor VanVrankin comes into the room, points at my 12 year old, and says "We don't say the "f" word here. I don't care how upset you are, or if your parents let you do it at home, you are NOT going to say it here." I thought he was joking. I was completely dumbfounded. See, I had sent my girls into the vet when we arrived, to get help with carrying my 75lb seizing dog. They were a bit hysterical and I imagine they were talking loudly and a tad incoherently. Her reaction to him was to say that she hadn't said it and to start bawling even louder. I told the doctor that he must be mistaken because my girls do not swear and do not like it when others do. He said that he was not going to argue with me and proceeded to literally leave our room, enter another and ask another patient! The patient, urse, said yes he had heard it also. Um, what is going on here? I calmed myself down long enough to speak to Doctor Hillary about my dogs condition. It is grave, and they still say they have done nothing that may have caused it, whether it was unintentional or not.
We were getting ready to leave so that they could continue to care for my dog, assuring me the whole time and telling me to call and check on him later. I asked to speak with Dr. VanVrankin before I left. My daughters had already rushed to the car because my 12 year old was completely mortified that anyone could think that she would swear like that. I told the doctor that I believe he owes my daughter an apology and he said no. I told him that my daughters are very good girls and would ever swear like that and he, again began interrogate the staff about what they heard. Only one said she had heard it...the rude one who addressed my girls at the desk when they were upset. I continued to let him know that I thought it was completely unprofessional of him to do that to my daughter. Especially when she was so upset about her dog at that time. I also told him that no one is allowed to speak to my children the way he did. Who does he think he is? And he kept going on with it even after she denied it. He should have pulled me to the side and mentioned it to me to handle. When I said this to him, he said "Well, that's the way I do things". Are you kidding me? He said that no one wants to admit that their kid swears. I am livid!!! I am sick to my stomach that these people have my dog there, taking care of him, after all of this.
Needless to say, I will never step foot into that vet again. And it is sad because my entire family and I have been using them for 25+ years. It's not only what happened with my daughter but their blatant lying to me about the surgery not being the cause of my dogs seizures. I have become a number to them. I cannot believe that people think that they can treat someone else any way that they want with no conscious or repercussions. I will bad mouth this vet til I no longer have a breath left in my body. By the way, we had to put my baby boy Steele to rest, and I will never forgive them for that. Not only are we heartbroken, but my husky is lost and heartbroken as well. She lost her best friend yesterday. We all did.
I consider this a rip-off because they took our money with complete disregard for our pet or how they treated us.
