I too am a victim of the Direct Buy high-pressure sign-up process. We should have known something was up when we were told that you had only this one chance to sign up and if you left without joining you were no longer eligible. All the lies sounded too good to be true, but my wife and I joined and financed the balance through Beta. After a year I still have not found anything that is actually cheaper at Direct Buy. Even kitchen cabinets, which we were told were far below market prices, can be purchased locally for the same or less.

After about 6 months I went to their office and asked if I get out of the contract as their system did not seem to be working for me. They said that there is no way out of the contract. I also called Beta and explained the situation to them and was told the same thing. I have a hard time believing this is type of membership system is legal, and if it is, it should not be.

If there is a class action suit I would be more than willing to join. I have stopped paying Beta and have been turned over to a collection agency. I would rather fight this in court than give them another cent.

Be smart, save your money, don't join DB.

Direct Buy "Money for Nothing"

The day after I posted my first report I received the below email. I am posting the emails exactly as written so that there is no further misunderstanding. Direct Buy only wants your money, whether you get something or nothing from their service. We have received nothing and I absolutely refuse to pay them another cent. I have had to put up with on-going collection attempts from rude and belittling Beta Finance Reps. I received three more emails from this KC all with nothing to offer except more hollow Direct Buy promises. I only hope for a CA Class Action Suit so that the lawyers can get rich and we can get our credit cleared from this situation.

Here are the emails:

Hello Folks my name is KC I am the sales manager here at DirectBuy East Bay. My owners sent me some information stating that you are unhappy and were trying to cancel your membership? I notice that you only visited our center once about a year ago. I am not sure what the issue is but I would like to invite back to the center to clear up any misunderstandings. We have a great new member orientation that I would also suggest that teaches our members how to use the center.

Please let me know how I can be of assistance.

My follow-up:

We have in good faith attempted numerous (about 100) times to use UCC and Direct Buy on-line to compare prices for many purchases we have made in the past year and found none that offered any savings. I have even called your facility a couple of times to discuss retail price differences and the lack of savings on many appliances, furniture and even kitchen cabinets. The answers were always that savings are not guaranteed on all products. So far, at least for me, make that no products.

My wife contacted the cabinet department three separate times to schedule an appointment to come in and discuss our needs and none of her calls were ever returned. We would have returned for at least a consultation on the kitchen cabinets had we been afforded the decency of a return call. I took my business elsewhere.

Following these disappointments I came in to the Pleasanton facility and asked if I could cancel the contract as it was costing me a great deal of money. I was told that there was no way out. I contacted Beta Finance and asked them same thing with the same reply, no way out. In May of this year I decided to suspend payment.

The only favor you could do for me would be to release me from this contract and refund our money, including intervening in all financial issues with Beta. The promises made during the presentation have not been realized and the tactics used, although legal for some reason, are certainly not above board. The insults directed at me by Beta's collection agency were of a personal nature and completely unacceptable.

I made the mistake once of coming to your facility and that will not happen again. My only brother is a lawyer and that will be my next step if I get another phone call from Beta's collection agency. I have been more than understanding about your business practices and nature of your sales tactics until now. If the harassment continues, I will not stand by and allow this relationship to damage my families credit. Fortunately, the internet provides a forum for the many people that feel strongly that DB misrepresented themselves. A forum that I will continue to use in the future if we cannot find some common ground on this issue.

It would show a great deal of good faith if DB recognized that their system just does not work for many of the people that are convinced to join during that one session and would allow for cancelation of the contract beyond the 3 day legal limit.

And he replied:

I am sorry that you have had so many issues. However I am a bit confused about your email. It says that you could not find any savings on appliances, furniture or cabinets? Appliances I understand, we discuss the low markup with members right from the start- How could you have not seen savings on cabinets? You never had your cabinets quoted? The furniture also? If seems that you were trying to use the internet for all your pricing. The internet is always being updated for pricing & is not as accurate as the actual purchasing agent books. Sometimes manufacturers where listing their retail pricing & not DirectBuy member pricing thats why it is always best to come to the center.

It seems that you never came in for your new member orientation so where unable to fully use the center. DirectBuy is an excellent benefit for our members. In business for 37 years and 985 million dollars in fiscal year 2006 merchandise can not be wrong. The only time DirectBuy does not work for members is if they do not use it.

I would really like you to benefit from the center would you be willing to come for an orientation and give it a second go? You can still benefit from this point forward.
