July of 2008 I had Direct Tv installed in our home. There were specials including free installation of all there different units such as DVT and HD DVT.
When the unit was to be installed I did not have an HD TV, but I told them I would be getting one in the future. Then I was told there was an extra charge of $10.00 a month for the HD service. At that point I had no reason to get the free HD DVT unit so I got the DVT feature only.
I have just purchased a new flat screen HD TV set, which was not cheap. I called Direct TV and told them I wanted to upgrade my unit to the HD feature. Direct TV then informed me if I wanted to get the upgrade I would have to pay a one time charge of $199.00 plus installation and handling.
I asked them why I was not told this when the other unit was installed and they said they just go by what needed at the time. I asked for a discounted or free unit and was denied both. I then ask if I could get my contract voided as it goes to July of 2010. I was told they would not do anything.
Now I have a HD TV that will not be able to broadcast in HD for over a year, thanks to Direct TV. If the HD TV was offered to me at no charge when I signed the contract why can't I get it free now??
This is nothing more than a ripoff to get me to pay for something they are now offering to new customers for free. I 'm paying over $85 a month and can not get my tv in HD, but a new customer can get a free unit with HD and only have to pay $29.97 a month. If I had been told I would have to pay the $199 ++ when it was installed I would have gotten the HD DVT unit and paid the extra $10 per month and would have purchased a HD TV earlier. I now know why I was not told of the hidden charges.

I wrote a rebuttal last week regarding the employee's rebuttal. Followed all the instructions and after hitting "submit" it inidicated it had been forwarded successful. It also stated when it would be posted which was Pacific coast time.
Did you receive it? Was there something wrong with the rebuttal so you can not use it?

was that supposed to be 1.99? regardless our HD rate is 9.99 monthly, no matter where you go any company will charge a similar rate, if the 10% surpases that rate on your bill you are reading it wrong. Perhaps this HD upgrade also meant an additional receiver with has a 5.99 mirroring fee monthly. As for the base package price raising, youre correct most packages have raised in price by about 5 dollars, but so did dish network-this depends on the economy, I remember when a bottle of coke was 69 cents ten years ago, prices raise, its life, you dont like it lower the package-you ALWAYS have that option. Dont be mad because dtv is holding you to your contract, any adult sticks to their obligation-get with it.

Direct TV's rip off contract

After just being told if I wanted to add HD to my service it would cost me $199++ I now have had my monthly rate increased by over 10%.
Direct TV claims that they notified me which must have been hidden in some area or document so I would not notice it.
I'm tied down to their 2 year contract and can't do anything about it, yet they can raise the my monthly rate. I've only had the service since July of 08. I am stuck with it until July 2010 when the contract ends....How can they raise the rate when we have a signed contract... read the small print! What a RIP OFF
