beware of discover card. there is a one day grace period. you are considered thirty days late the day after you payment is due. you will then be charged a $29 late fee plus a comparable overlimit fee if the late fee took you over you available credit limit, even though they are the ones causing the account to go over the limit. if you are late by their standards a few times, they will close your account and not tell you.

i found out when my credit was ran to purchase a house. funny, it was closed in july and i am just now finding out in octber.

What "Grace Period"?

AUTHOR: Martha - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, February 23, 2003

Having read all of the comments in this report, some I agree with. Do spend wisely, don't go over your budget, pay your bills on time etc. But I did have a run in with Discover. My ex-husband and I both have excellent credit, paid our bills in a timely manner and worked very hard to pay balances in full.

Last fall, I took my College bound daughter shopping for necessary items for her dorm. We were at a WalMart. The total of the purchases was aprox. $300.00. Having a high limit on the Discover card, I decided to use it for the purchases.

The card was declined. I was baffled since I knew I was way under my limit! But I chalked it up to maybe the store was having problems with their credit machines (it does happen). I paid with a check. The following day ex husband went to use the card for a gas purchase and again declined. I am now worried that someone has accessed the account so I call customer service. I am told that my payment was received after the 8:00 am cutoff of the due date!

After some very heated arguments with a representative I am told that I don't understand accounting-I am an accountant!- and that since the payment was "late" by TWO HOURS!, they had suspended our credit. No courtesy calls, no little notes-"Did you forget your payment?", they just flat out revoked our credit!

I have since paid the account in full. I will never have anything to do with Discover again.

Against my warnings, ex-husband kept the card.

Moral of the story-credit cards suck unless you can pay the balance in full when you get the bill!

Learn to manage your Credit wisely

I agree with some of the rebuttals to this complaint. This is not a ripoff. There is not a 1 day grace period, it is 30 days. The grace period is considered from when you make your original purchase. If you are late, all bets are off and they can charge you whatever they feel is reasonable.

The point is, don't be late. Or if you are, call them and work with them. Ihave had a Discover Card for 10 years and have never had a problem with them. I lost my bill one time and knew that I wouldn't make the payment on time. I called them and explained the situation. I was able to make a payment over the phone. That's the point.

You can't sit there and ignore your debts, get behind, and then complain when they take action against you. This site is for people who have been unfairly treated by a company or entity through no fault of their own and have taken all reasonable steps to resolve the situation. It isn't for whiners and deadbeats to complain when a company takes punitive action against them because they haven't lived up to their end of the bargain.

discover does charge late fees that is fraud

AUTHOR: S - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, February 10, 2003

You are right discover does charge late fees that is fraud. I been charged this fee time and time again even when payment was received on time I have statements to prove. Discover card like any other credit card company gives out credit cards to anyone. Why? Because over 50% of you will not be able to pay. This means late fees, over credit limit fees, more interest, harassing phone calls. These company's are not here to help you, their sole perpuse is to take like the old banker in It's A Wonderful Life. I will give you all you need just to take it back in GREED.

#2 Consumer Suggestion

Learn to manage your credit

AUTHOR: Preston - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, December 23, 2002

Judging by the original ripoff report filed, I think it should be taken into consideration that the original author apparently needs some credit management skills.

First off, whether or not there is a one day grace period, it shouldn't matter because you should allow more than adequate time to have the payment received. Discover also has more options to pay than other credits.. i.e. Via Mail, online, or at any Sears. If I don't have enough to pay the balance in full, send the minimum via mail, to avoid the late fee, and then pay the rest at Sears when the funds become available.

Second, the author mentioned a late fee caused her to be over her limit. Possibly making a better budget would be a more ample solution than whining about having her credit cards maxed out.

Discover Card has been the most helpful off all my creditors, and would like to breifly explain my story.

I was ripped off by a car dealer earlier this year, and they swindled me into a used car loan of 14% despite my credit score of over 700. The car had been crashed, they had covered it up, and I had several 'fees' which arose.. as in getting an attorney on retainer before the issue was resolved along with some other personal issues. I called Discover Card and explained the situation, they put me at 0% for purchases and 1.9% for balance transfers. I transferred the entire car loan over to Discovercard. The catch was that I was now $18k in credit card debt, but due to Discover Card lowing my interest rates to that low, within a few months, I will be completely out of debt thanks to Discover Card's help. Much more helpful than Capital One or Citibank have been.

call customer service ...get some more information before you start complaining

AUTHOR: george - ()

POSTED: Monday, November 25, 2002

used to work at discover in the collection department for 2 years. Many of these claims are false. First, concerning the late fee and over limit fee. You should have contacted the customer service and ask that the fees be waived as long as you are in good standing and make your payments on time especially if you were only one day late. It does not seem that you do or your account would not have gone over the limit in the first place. Mabye you should look into using your credit more wisely instead of running up the balance to the limit and then by making minimum payments which cover mostly the interest. You would not have gotten into this situation in the first place.

The second fact which lead to my first conclusion is reguarding the fact that your account was automatically closed because you were behind a few times. The account was not closed it was revoked. Accounts are automatically revoked once they are 3 months behind in payments or you are delinquent on other discover accounts. All of this information is in the contract you signed when you signed the Cardmember agreement, including the late fees and overlimit fees, but you probably did not read that considering you were just looking for some easy money.

You should get some more information before you start complaining about something you did not research in the first place. Also the late payments do not go onto your credit report until you are two payments behind (60 days by their standards) it shows up as 30 days on your credit report. The accounts are counted from the days since last statment was sent out or the last billing cycle that you made a payment on.
