I was laying on the couch when my roommate came home very excited. He said he had an opportunity to buy a home theater system for next to nothing. He said he was approached by two guys in a white van or suv at a Burger King in Tacoma and they were going to sell him a Divinci D7 home theater system for $300. Im not sure but I think they followed him to an ATM and then home because he already had the cash and he was asking me if he should go through with it.
At this point, I had never heard of this scam and I also know nothing about home theater systems. My roommate convinced me it was a good deal so I told him to do it. He went down stairs with the money (and my gun) and went through with the purchase. I peeked out the window to see him handing them the money and getting a big box in return. We got the box open and everything seemed to be there. All the components were wrapped in a packaging and everything looked brand new.
We got it all hooked up and turned it on. It sounded good but not what I would expect a $3200 home theater system to sound like. So I guess it was my roommates great plan to re-sell this system on Craigslist for a lot more than what he paid for it. I helped him post the add and everything was good to go...or so I thought. I was notified by Craigslist this morning becuase "our" posting had been removed for being a fraud or something like that. Thats exactly when I realized my roommate had been scammed.

A guy comes up in a white van and asks if you roommate wants to purchase a home theater system for over 90% off and neither you or your roommate had a clue that there was a remote chance it was a SCAM? No in reality you probably thought it "could" be a scam, but that is what these people rely on your greed. As you said he figured he could sell it and make some good money.
Let's guess the "story" was that they were a contractor who for some strange reason bought too many systems and their "customer" decided not to take them all. So being the good person that they are, after all they are in business and there would be no way they could sell those for full price. They decide out of the goodness of their heart to let your roommate have one for only $300.
Even if it wasn't a scam how do you know that they were not stolen goods. Not only would you have been scammed for the money but could have ended up in jail for receiving stolen goods. Especially if you posted it on Craigs List, yes the cops do check Craigs list and other sites for stolen goods.
From what I have heard these systems are actually working systems, just not what was promised. The best thing to do is to set this system up and use it. Then every time you look at it you can remember the lesson that if something sounds too good to be true it probably is.
