Dolce Pizza and Bagel Cafe Barnegat Dolce Bagel Cafe Barnegat Moldy Pastries are Today's Special Barnegat New Jersey

   I went to Dolce Bagel and Pizza Cafe this morning to get a coffee and a few pastries for my family for breakfast.  Once home, we began eating these pastries when we noticed that they didn't taste right. Then we noticed why, on the inside there was a large mass of fuzzy white and greenish mold. This was one of the pastries. The next pastry had a fuzzy black speckled mold throughout the bottom. I was disgusted and furious. Before I had noticed what was wrong with them the first thing I had done was give a piece to my infant daughter. I called up to complain and told him he needed to throw them out and the owner seemed indifferent to what I had told him. I went right down there to get my money back, however when I brought the rotten pastries back he refused to refund me because he didn't like how upset we were over the phone.

      I kept demanding that this man return my money, and not only did he refuse, he threatened to "give me a beating" if I didn't leave quietly. At this point I made sure to raise my voice so that everyone in the restaurant knew that this man had just threatened me and I was about to call the police, and also that the pastries I bought had mold on them and that there was still a whole tray of these pastires for sale in the window. I showed the different molds inside the pastries to everyone who was behind me in line before I left.

   I called the police, and as they requested I went down to the station to file a report. I also contacted the Ocean County Board of Health. 

       Just so you know I have attended culinary school at Atlantic Cape Community College and as a requirement have taken an extensive course in foodborne illness. This course requires knowledge of not only proper food handling and storage techniques, but also pathogens and contaminates, yeasts and bacteria. I am serve safe certified in New Jersey. The reason I am saying this is so that you have a frame of reference for my experience, it wasn't just a few black specks it was BLACK MOLD. It wan't just a white area inside a nice pastry it was HAIRY WHITE and GREEN MOLD. 

These pastries must have been sitting for a very long time. 

   I didn't lose a large amount of money at Dolce Bagel and Pizza Cafe, but it does hurt me on a deeper level. I had been laid off last month and as anyone who has ever been knows that unemployment doesn't cover much. What was supposed to be a nice treat for my family and I ended up being a nightmare. 

If you or someone you love eats from this place please be careful. Sometimes symptoms from foodborne illness do not manifest immediately. I am especially concerned because I see elderly people eat here frequently and elderly and children can suffer the worst if they are exposed to contaminated food.
