In June of 2002, my husband and I purchased a 2002 Toyota with 20,000 miles because we were told by the salesman and the finance manager that the warranty would be the "Certified Warranty" which was a lot better that the one Toyota offers for 36,000 miles or 3 years on new purchases. The "Certified Warranty" offers 100,000 miles or 6 years.

After about 6 months I could hear a popping noise in the wheel. I took my car to the the nearest Toyota Dealer and was told that I did not have a certified warranty if I did not have an identification card. I showed the guy a sheet that was in my glove box that was a certified check off sheet. He said no I.D. card - no warranty! I call Don McGill Toyota and of course the salesman was "no longer with the company" so I spoke with the manager and he told me that he remembered me and was sure I had the certified warranty that it must have been an oversight to not have given me the I.D. Card. He said that he would check and call me right back. After an hour he called back to say he had checked and the car was not certified but he could offer me a warranty for $300.00 for 5 years. I told him I would speak to my husband about the matter and get back with him.

The next day I called him to say that we would agree to pay the $300 I was then told that he (the manager) was very sorry but he had mis-quoted the price that I would have to pay and the warranty would cost me $600.00, but I still would not have a "certified Warranty. The "cerfitifed warranty" is the reason we purchased this particular car.

This is such a consumer rip-off. I have since spoken with 2 other people to whom this rip-off tactic has been used by Don McGill's dealership.

it may be to late for you to fix this situation

AUTHOR: Mark - (U.S.A.)

sk- Unfortunatly it may be to late for you to fix this situation depending on the papers that you signed. But for everyone else out there make sure you pay attention to a piece of paperwork called a "buyers guide" or "as is". This document will state the existing warranty status of a car before you meet a finance manager (the guy who sells warranties and has you sign contracts right before you leave the dealership). If a car is certified the buyers guide(that you sign) should state the certified years and mileage warranty. usually 5yrs 100000 mi. If you live in a state that does not require an buyers guide please make sure that you get some proof of the warranty staus BEFORE YOU DRIVE THE CAR OF THE LOT!!! Remember a honest salesman has nothing to hide so asking for proof usually involves nothing more than making a copy of a document that is in your file. It takes 2 minutes to do and if they apprieciate your business it should be no problem.
