Hi, I am Joanna one of the children Doris and Lawrence adopted. It was every bit as hellish as described in the original post, only the effects are more lasting that I had hoped.

The first thing I thought as a fearful child was "If only I could get out of here!" and finally I was able but the damage to my self esteem was already done.

Children who are abused suffer and suffer until they are out of the house but also until they can overcome the psychological effects of what was done to them.

No one can change what happened to us in that house of hell but I do pray for other children who suffer today. If someone could or would have taken the courage to speak up when we would come to school dirty, depressed and covered in scratches, we could have been saved from years of abuse.

It's difficult to speak up for a child if you suspect he/she is being abused, but if someone is able to point out what is suspected it could very well give that child a second chance for hope and to somehow break out of their living hell.

God Bless my brothers and sister and I hope one day they can be at peace and know that all along they were valued, lovable, and beautiful human beings.

I know in the case of my family not calling police, they were afraid (they have since told me) that them doing that would only make things worse. It is epidemic. Every 15 seconds in the US a woman is beaten and a child is beaten or molested. The laws protect more the perpertrators than the victims. Our silence was bought by the threats of death to our mom if we told, and her silence was secured by the same threat...us kids getting killed if she told. I am not silent anymore, because my moms death released my voice.

I wish you would email me privately so I can share a little more with you how I broke the hold of my step father away from my life. I called him up and I told him I forgave him. He was mortified. speechless. After a three day "circus" trial in the town of Gerard, Kansas..he was found not guilty of any wrong doing. not guilty. He was let go by a technicality. The judge would not allow any prior abuse (of her or us kids)to be let into evidence. I then got neighbors to write up what the knew had been gong on for years and posted it everywhere. On lamp-posts, street poles, front doors , cars in his and surrounding neighborhoods. word spread quickly to stay away and to keep all kids away from him becasue he was a molester, and battered women and children. He died a very lonely death feb 4, 1999. He is paying for all he has done to so many people now. Thank God he is gone.Sandra, thank you for your words.

Parents are supposed to be there for their kids. I agree that we should all be involved as a family and friends if you know about abuse you should report it. What I don't understand is how family members know something is wrong and don't take action. But you know they are sitting behind closed doors talking about "little Mary's bruises or she seems too thin" Are they afraid to ask the parents or call the police? I don't understand that. Do they expect it all to go away?
I feel bad that all of you had such a bad child hood. You sure did not deserve it and it is too bad that there was noone around to stick up for you from the very beginning. It just makes me sick, this is also for the other person that got molested by her step father I hope someone cuts his balls off.

My brother and I were beaten and molested from age 5 to ages 18,as was my mother beaten. We were terrified, but as a child -we thought everyone lived like that becasue that is what our step-father told us.

He was an alcoholic, but did all this even when sober. He was beyond evil.

All our family knew, as we had bruises, ect...
and no one called the authorities.

Neighbors heard yelling, screaming, crying, noone called. Finally the screams became silent.

If you 4 who wrote this are the four children who were/and still are (emotionally) abused...you know what I am talking about.

My step father finally murdered my mother, after 35 years of threatening to do so. YOU need to GO INTO the police station and FILE reports. ALL $ OF YOU. There is no statue, as far a s I know,if you tell and file against them your mother now. I would also sue her for damages.

If she is not your mother and you KNOW these children are abused..it is your responsibility to take steps to stop the abuse and to protect those children, by making a police report and signing your name to it. Make a personal appearance to the police, just dont call them up to go and check it out. Also, talk to the neighbors/and relatives of them and see if they will do the same. You all are responsible if you know what is going on, and let it go any further. Please do it today. I have been one of those children, and it is a very lonely place to be.

This women is such a manipulative,lying, violent, sociopath. You do not even know the half of it. She adopted 5 children and every Christmas bought her youngest daughter at least 25 presents and would buy the other 4 children 1 or on 2 separate occasions 0. When they cried she slapped them in the face, punched them in the ears, and yelled at them for being "Ungreatfull A**ssholes" Her husband Lawrence was such a coward he would watch this and often punch, kick, and slap the kids as well to make sure they would stop crying so the neighbors would not hear.

Ask her about the time she threw her 8 year old son Gabriel down a flight of stairs, kicked him in the face while he was lying there in pain, and told him to "Stop crying or I will give you something to cry about" Ask her about the time she called her 11 year old son Larry a "Stupid a*****e" and punched him in the lip and gave him a bloody nose. His crime? He peed his pants while on a car trip, they had not stopped for 5 hours!
Ask her about the time she Called her 6 year old daughter Joanna "A Rotten Good for Nothing little Idiot" and pulled her hair until her face was in the cement and rubbed her nose in it until it was raw and bleeding. Her crime? She had picked a leaf off of a Rose bush!

This women needs to be put in prison.

Are you the 4 foster children she abused? I think this is very sad that children get treated this way. I hope you can some how stop her from treating other children like this.
