On May 22, 2001, we (Army Corps of Engineers -- a FEDERAL agency) received a fax promoting the following:
"4 Days & 3 Nights in Orlando, Florida (Home of Disney) &
3 Days & 2 Nights in Either Daytona Beach or Coca Beach, Florida." There was a "BONUS" for "reserving today": "a Bahamas Cruise & Island Stay for 5 Days & 4 Nights."
At the time, I was the treasurer for a non-profit organization connected with the Corps of Engineers (a FEDERAL agency), and I was asked to call the reservation number (1-800-661-9113). The fax was 'authored' by a "DEBBIE ADAMS, PROMOTIONS DIRECTOR". I called the number and talked to a "Jen" who told me the vacation packages were good for 18 months, that they required 60-days notice, that the vacations were extendable and transferrable, that the cruise portion to the Bahamas required a port tax of $159 per person and a $14.20 shipping and handling. My organization directed me to order TWO cruises. Jen asked me for my Discover credit card account number and my account was subsequently charged $412.20 (two port charges plus the $14.20 S/H fee).
A few weeks later, we received the "package". The toll free number on the fax was bogus. I did an internet search and found a "customer service" number for Dynasty (1-800-240-8980); I called it and talked with a Norm at Ext 6702. He told me they required a 45-60 day notice. I told him that's what I was trying to do!! He gave me an address to write to:
Dynasty International Associates, Inc.
15420 Comus Road, Boyds, Maryland, 20841, ATTN: Michelle.
I sent the letter along with my "contract" number and "customer ID" on July 27, 2001. I never received a reply!!
I wish there was some recourse we had to make these crooks pay. In addition to the rip-off, it involved FEDERAL equipment and FEDERAL employees at a FEDERAL installation.
Too bad we couldn't make this a FEDERAL offense!
