We paid around $500 for our Dyson D17 vacuum cleaner only 1 years ago. What a ripoff!

Within one year, we had to schedule for repairs to be done to the power button on our vacuum through Dyson Customer Service. Customer Service instructed us to bring our vacuum to a repair shop in New Philadelphia, OH. The owner of the repair shop informed us that the canister on our vacuum needed replaced as it had been recalled and kept our vacuum at his shop for approximately 4 weeks while he waited for the replacement parts.

When we finally received our vacuum cleaner back, the hose would not work for the attachments. Every time we try to use the attachments, the hose sucks itself together, preventing air flow. We contacted the repair shop, who denied it was their fault and told us to call Dyson Customer Service.

When I contacted Dyson, the Customer Service Rep explained that since our vacuum didn't work properly from the time we bought it until the canister was replaced, we wouldn't have noticed a problem. However, since the canister has been replaced, the suction power is greater, thus causing the hose to not function properly.

The Dyson Customer Service Rep then explained that the problem with the hose wasn't covered under warranty so they refused to pay for the repair. This vacuum obviously has a lot of problems and the company isnt willing to stand behind it, so BUYER BEWARE!  Dont buy a vacuum from this company!

BBB Complaint Details - see Dyson's disregard after getting our $$

Also note, that this Dyson WAS NOT PURCHASED AT BEST BUY... This was indicated at the time of registration of our Dyson. This is a lame excuse from Dyson not to cover a KNOWN DEFECT in their product!

11/21/2009

The problem is with the canister not functioning properly according to the service shop that Dyson had us take our vacuum to. The suction from the canister should not make the hose collapse. The new hose did the exact same thing as the original hose. The canister has already been replaced as it wasn't functioning properly and had been recalled by the Dyson Company, according to their authorized repair shop. The repair shop, Quality Sew and Vac, in New Philadelphia, Ohio, had our vacuum for over a month and said that they did everything they could to get it to function properly to no avail. We bought this vacuum because we have heard that Dyson stands behind their products. We don't believe it is too much to ask for them to either refund our money or exchange our vacuum for a model that works.

11/20/2009   Dyson's Response

Machine was purchased from Best Buy on 3/24/08; we do not refund machines not purchased directly from Dyson. We do offer a 5 year warranty that covers manufacturer defects. The problem the customer was having with the hose did not demand exchanging the machine but could be fixed. On 9/17 an order was placed for a hose under his warranty; hose was delivered 9/21/09.

We are asking that the Better Business Bureau reopen our case as it has not been resolved. The Dyson Company has given us the run around from the beginning of this complaint. They gave us a telephone number to call to have our vacuum cleaner repaired, and it was a wrong number. We are asking that the company let us return our Dyson D-17 vacuum to them and refund our purchase price. Because of all the issues with this vacuum, we have replaced it. This vacuum has never worked properly, even after it was serviced by one of their dealers. The main canister and hose have been replaced and it still does not work. We feel that we have been patient up until this point but we are tired of dealing with this company. We do not feel as though this company has taken our complaint seriously. Even the responses from the company did not seem professional or well thought out. They had typographical errors or misspellings, and gave the wrong phone number. We are asking the company to stand behind their customer satisfaction guarantee, as these problems were reported to the company even before our one year warranty was up.

The number that Dyson gave in their response is a conference calling line. This issue has not been resolved as we have not received a proper number to call to arrange to have our vacuum repaired.

We at Dyson ould like to have MR. Buzzeo, send his unit int o our repair facility in Buffalo, NY so that our engineers can inspect his vacuum. If it can be repaired it will be repaired and sent back to hime in perfect working order, if it cannot be repaired and the cause is due to normal wear and tear or a manufacturer's defect the machine can be replaced. We ask that Mr. Buzzeo call Dyson's Helpline at 1-866-639-9766 his account has been noted and any Representative he speaks to will be able to set up his inspection.

According to the terms of acceptance on the afore mentioned case, I am writing to humbly request the BBB to reopen this case against Dyson, Inc. Please see the case in question COMPLAINT ACTIVITY REPORT Case # 94255606. I have included a copy for your convenience. I Robert Buzzeo have received the replacement hose for the Dyson D17 vacuum and the new hose collapses exactly like the original did on the first and any subsequent attempts to run the vacuum. This vacuum is not usable in this condition at all and has not been for many many months now. I have had to go out and replace this vacuum since Dyson will not stand behind their $500+ paper weight. I am asking that Dyson, Inc provide a full refund of the purchase price in lieu of a potential lawsuit. I am sure we are not the only customers that Dyson is attempting to take advantage of. Upon receipt of the full refund I will gladly return the faulty product at Dyson's expense. Thank You,

(The consumer indicated he/she ACCEPTED the response from the business.) This sub standard quality and even worse customer service is not acceptable on a $500+ Vacuum that is nearly brand new. SHAME ON YOU Dyson! However, providing that Dyson, Inc replaces the defective hose the way they should have when I originally requested and the replacement hose works without defect. I am willing to accept this settlement. However if the new hose collapses as the existing factory one does, I will be requesting the BBB to re-open this case.
