Shore Athletic Club is a scam. They will not cancel my membership even though I my contract has been over and I am on month to month. They keep billing my card even thought I do not go anymore. They want me to send them an open ended cancellation policy letter by certified mail to corporate headquarters which could take up to a month to approve.
Please don't give these dirt bags any business.

If I change my bank card they will charge me a 30 dollar return fee and send it to collections. So I have to keep
getting billed until they find the time to cancel me.

I fulfilled my year contract a while ago. I am on month to month which I told the girl at the desk to cancel at Feb.
Which obviously didn't happen. I am checking into the bank thing. I just don't want them to say I owe then a s**t load of money for a bounced account then send it to collections.

Here is a link to their cancellation policies just so you can see how messed up this is. It is a PDF link please read this before you consider using these crooks.

#1 UPDATE EX-employee responds

They may be taking your money with tricky ways, but they are not a scam.

AUTHOR: kasobus - (United States of America)

POSTED: Saturday, April 14, 2012

As a former employee for many years I can tell you flat out that I hate the business and they do a lot of stuff incorrectly and poorly. But, that does not interfere with my perspective in anyway; I will simply state the facts.

FIRST COMPLAINT - BILLING, $30 CHARGE.

Everyone is responsible for their payment information just like any other place your paying monthly. If your card is stolen or expired it obviously will not run through the system, and charges ESAC roughly $10 for the false charge. (Yes, their payment service they pay for sucks that bad.) Update your card information like you would anywhere else; its your responsibility, not ESAC's.

SECOND COMPLAINT- MEMBERSHIP CANCELLATION.

Like many places you sign a contract you are obligated to.

It is obvious that you are obligated to your year contract you signed. There are THREE ways out of a contract, Death, disability (with doctors note), and moving over 50 miles away. Each on of those must be sent in with the cancellation policy form by certified mail. Certified mail is a way to protect the member and the business so there is documentation and proof.

I believe there are many other ways they could have this done (such as a form you fill out online and your proof of ID could be your social or something since your required to fill that out on your contract.)

They introduced an Auto renewal, a check box at the end of your contract that you sign for which is completely optional. (IT IS A GREAT DEAL FOR MEMBERS.) It locks you in at your rate (in case it goes up) and puts your account on a month to month basis after your year or 2 year contract. It will not stop until you fill out your cancellation policy and mailed in by certified mail. That form can be sent in to cancel your account at any point in time once your account is open-ended. Also meaning you could have mailed it in the first day of your membership to cancel a year and two months from that date and it will be canceled.

I agree the 30 day policy is a little insane, but all you have to do is mail it in a little earlier with the date you want to cancel.

WITH ALL OF THAT SAID
This person has every right to complain about how ridiculous some of their policies may be. That is very understandable, BUT to claim the business is a scam for following through with a contract a person signs is ridiculous.
