Former Sir Francis Drake High School basketball star Eddie Joe Chavez teaches basketball clinics through out Marin County, California. This clinic is a major ripoff. What you get is the Chavez family, Bucky Chavez, Neal Chavez, and Eddie Joe Chavez, three individuals with enormous egos who spend most the time trying to convince people they're basketball royalty. Then long time unemployed Bucky, who lives with his mother in law, calls you trying to CONvince you that your kid has potential to be a pro and they try to get you to fork over more money for private lessons.

Eddie Joe was a high school star, he did well in college, and he was the 113th draft pick by Houston, but he never played. He went on to play in a semi pro league in the Phillipines. Who cares? Bucky never did well beyond high school, and Neal deserted his Junior Varsity team at Drake High because the Chavez family created alot of trouble for the head coach. The Chavez family believe they're all stars. Eddie Joe was an asst coach at Drake, but his enormous ego couldn't handle the fact that the head coaching job went to someone else. Neal, Bucky, and Eddie Joe, were never successful coaches. Eddie Joe would sit on the sidelines and complain about the head coach. Eddie Joe called all of us parents complaining about the head coach.

Eddie Joe was fired, so Bucky had Neal quit the JV team. The Chavez family let down the team and the school. The only thing you'll learn from the Chavez basketball clinics is how to be a bad sport, "If you don't get your way, quit the team". And they will try and convince you to spend more money on private lessons. The lessons you already pay for, alot of the time is spent on the Chavez family telling boring stories about their careers. The kids pay to learn, not to listen to BS stories by a family who think they're basketball stars. Parents were thrilled when Neal quit because we no longer had to deal with these people and their enormous egos. Eddie Joe, the most successfull of the three, thinks he's a professional basketball star. He's not.

sounds like bitterness to me

AUTHOR: sanfranciscoproam - ()

POSTED: Friday, September 13, 2013

I've been around the San Francisco ProAm for more than 30 years.  In my time growing up there...i saw both Eddie Joe and Bucky Chavez play.

They played against the best players that league has put out.  There were games against Brian Shaw, Gary Payton, Jason Kidd, Rex Walters, Eddie House, and Steve Nash.

Fans came out to see the Chavez brothers do more than Hold their own against these players.  They beat them.  They are part of a team San Francisco that has won the most championships.

To say they never did more than be good high school players or that they played overseas...and you say, 'who cares'?  well, obviously, i do.  You may have your opinion but it sounds bitter.  It sounds like you just have issues about your own player who didn't rise above the level you expect out of him/her.

Just because you go to camp doesn't mean you'll go on to the NBA.  These guys know basketball and if you've ever seen them play, you'd know they are extremely talented basketball players.  To see them play against those names i mentioned and the Golden State warriors, SFPROAM has scrimmaged them from time to time in the 80's.  You'd know that only Gary Payton and Jason Kidd brought in MORE fans than the Chavez Brothers.

In fact, ProAm endorses them as LEGENDS in the League along with 'other' NBA players who came consistenly to play for the crowds. http://www.sanfranciscoproam.com/legends.htm

Mark Misses the Mark

AUTHOR: Marin Hoops Dad - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, March 31, 2010

This report is shocking to me insofar as it completely contradicts every criticism that I have ever heard "from the sidelines" about the Chavez family approach to coaching youth sports.

The criticism that I have heard goes like this: (1) Buck and EJ don't charge enough to operate a sustainable business; (2) they don't teach the "winning is everything credo" that is necessary to succeed in competitive sports; (3) they spend too much time and attention stressing the intangibles such as respect, teamwork, integrity; (4) they allow non-competitive kids to play, thus taking away court time from the more competitive players, etc. In other words, they are unpatriotic and un American.

If you want your kids to learn to play a selfish, "me first," style of ball, by all means keep them away from the Chavez brothers, and their kids. Send them to a very expensive camp where the coaches will pimp the kids and their parents to believe that they are climbing the golden ladder to Division 1 scholarships and the NBA.  Don't worry that none of those coaches has played professional ball, they are really smart business people who know how to run successful (profitable) camps and clinics.  All of the uniforms match and the "free" shoes are really sweet.

The personal attacks leveled upon the Chavez family members by Markscott miss the mark.  Or, this is just an extreme tongue in cheek rift.  Since we can't be sure, I can only respond that the Chavez brothers are indeed stars in their field, to this day, and I would encourage every parent I know to seek them out as tutors and mentors for their aspiring youth basketball players.

Bitter and inaccurate

AUTHOR: SanAnselmoGuy - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, November 25, 2009

It's hard to know where to begin in responding to a statement that contains so much bitterness and so many inaccuracies.

I have never felt that either Buck or EJ present themselves as stars or have an ego problem. My experience is the opposite. Neil is a great kid. I have watched him play for years and he is very unselfish, modest and a total team player. It is offensive that a 16 year old kid should be slandered in this way. The fact that he had a problem with his JV coach tells you a lot more about the coach (a notorious jerk) than it does about Neil. Neil had guts to do what he did and in any event he was back on the team in a day or two. Buck is a little hard to figure out at first but he has a heart of gold and a contagious passion for the game. EJ worked with anyone who showed up at the Drake open gyms last summer and did not charge a dime. He helped my son improve his game and his confidence immensely.

Actually I'd like to hear some of those 'boring' stories. Like what it was like for EJ to be on the court against Magic, Jordan and Bird when he played for Panama against the 1992 Dream Team. Or what it was like to hit a three in Magic's face. Problem is, I've known Buck and EJ for a while and neither one has ever mentioned it.

Untrue and Unnecessary

AUTHOR: 2009 - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, June 06, 2009

First of all, Bucky Chavez and his family are my neighbors. I consider them family friends, and so does everyone else in my area because they are one of the nicest families I know. The Chavez children are all sweethearts and they are very talented.

Eddie Joe coached my daughter and she thought he was one of the best coaches she ever had. The head coach at Drake High School is greatly disliked among students, except for his daughter (who plays for him). Everyone was sad to see EJ go.

I can't believe anyone could post something like this about a family who is so selfless. They are always giving back to the community and participating in fundraisers. Please delete this post.

This report is Untrue and Libelous

AUTHOR: Hoopmarin - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, March 24, 2009

Eddie Joe Chavez has been donating his time for many years to prospects in Marin basketball.

I cannot think of a single time where E.J. charged for this service except when it was for the benefit of a community organization or project such as the Lagunitas Gym.

By posting such content, which, by the way, denigrates a 15 year old boy, you show your forum to be less than responsible at best, and at worst, a forum for any half-wit with a grudge who wants to damage someone's reputation but hasn't any actual ammo.

Please remove this posting.

Thank you.

Unfair characterization

AUTHOR: Thrasher - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, January 26, 2009

I cannot comment on the clinics. However, my son plays high school basketball on a team coached by Bucky. The comment that all they teach is poor sportsmanship could not be further from our experience with Bucky as coach. He is quirky, but teaches kids respect for their opponent, the officials, and the game.
