THE STEADY DECLINE OF ELANCE
Prepared to be screwed, Elance's new system
At this point I think it's time to qualify my knowledge on knowledge. I have made a living as an online freelancer for 4 years now, 2 with odesk and 2 with elance. There was a time when Elance was considered superior in terms of quality for skilled contractors. Well the mess has hit the fan since then and Elance looks to be the prime suspect.
Let's go over a list things you can now expect from this "quality driven" company:
No longer will you even have to chance to know what country a client is from.
Their excuse? "This is to prevent manipulation of the system and contacting clients outside of the platform..." as quoted by one Lisa of Elance Customer Relations.
Expect for your guaranteed escrow to not be, well... gauranteed.
Elance allows chargebacks and when caught in a situation of not holding up to their guarantee willfully will commit fraud and change their TOS mid conversation as exhibited by on Katie of Elance. It wasn't until court papers were filed that Elance did settle the dispute.
Your paying a membership is no longer welcome
Elance has decided that contractor's who can't find enough worth in themselves to invest $10 a month should be the focal point of their concerns. In order to combat odesk's 25 free bids elance now offers 40. The results? A massive uprising in fake profiles and portfolios.
Elance's new capital and revenue seems to go into pockets more than progress
Over the life of elance it has had over $80million in investment funds along with the backing structural support of IBM. This of course take's into account a that elance now average $500 million revenue yearly. Even with this in interviews and questioning of new features elance says that their new changes were required to cover large flaws in the system accounting for revenue loss.
Elance team is undoubtedly the worst seen in a while

Elance now encourages clients to falsify information
Elance has set their new system up to encourage buyers to hide or falsify as much information as possible and actually encourages this practice now. The reason? As Lisa of Elance stated "This is to prevent manipulation of the system and contacting clients outside of the platform..."
What did actually equal to? A previously unmatched amount of both client and buyer fraud within days of the implement of the system.
Feel free to plagiarize
Elance has taken to turning their head at copyright infringement as legally they can't be held responsible for people faking their portfolios of work. Like Batman? Appparently so do a few contractors as it has gotten so bad that there's duplicate portfolios of the same stolen work.
$20 is the goal
Elance's average income per project used to be $180 before 2013. Since their new policy updates the #s are continually declining. Be prepared to work more projects for less.
Guess who isn't liable
Not elance or the client anymore as Elance's new terms places sole liability of any legal ramifications of work solely on the contractor. Even if a client hands you work, which is plagiarized or stolen, if you utilize that material in the project you take full responsibility for any actions.
Prepare to compete like never before!
Remember those 40 free bids? Well now that elance gives more bids to free users than it did to paid members previously you can welcome yourself to the glorious new open market filled with unskilled workers in your field undercutting you at $20 for a $200 job.
DON'T POST IN THE WATER COOLER!!!
Think a forum post will help your issues? Not likely as Morantes Garnor (previously senior manager in the failing stages of Ebay and Ning) will make sure that any posts made in any attempt to show elance's actions of allowing plagiarism, theft or more will be removed. Posts which have outed none thieves, false profiles profile made to support elance and more have all been mysteriously deleted rather swiftly.
The final result of all of this? Congratulations, elance you just lost all respect from your skilled force, ushered in a new era crap pool applicants and drove away all of your decent clients who I'm sure won't be looking to wade through hundreds of the wasteful applications which will be sent their way.
