There are Court records, testimony taken under oath, recorded documents and Leo and Ella Stein's own admission that there was sexual abuse on the Circle S Ranch. Leo Stein's license to operate was revoked. He was banned from being around children under the age 18.

Ella Stein cut her two (2) sons out of her will, and left what was left of her small estate to her two (2) daughters. The public record shows the two daughters sold the 40 acre ranch for a paltry $135,000 to one of the Salome High School teachers.

The price was so low because the property was dilapidated, and in disrepair.  Basically, the property sold for the value of desert land. Such a pity.

The main house was filled with the stench of animal feces, and urine, in which Ella Stein spent her last days. There were rats, mice, and rodents, who had infiltrated the foundation.

 None of the buildings were inhabitable for normal living.

With respect to Leo and Ella voluntarily “retiring”, this is another, laughable and total lie.

Twenty five (25) boys testified, including ME.  Most of the boys did NOT know each other, but, had been “residents” at the Ranch from 1958-1978. ALL told identical stories of the horror, beatings, humiliation and torture.

 As someone who grew up in the California Foster Care system I can state that IF there was abuse, it was NOT through out the ENTIRE juvenile populace. Abusers have their personal "favorites". Which basically means sex for "love". I saw it MANY times in MANY different homes I was in. There would be a counselor or foster parent that would spend time with a child. SOMETIMES it was innoculous and non threatening. SOMETIMES it was the child looking for ANY kind of "love". Make NO MISTAKE!!!!!! The children who "grow up" in foster care ARE NOT like your average American juvenile. MANY TIMES its the child themselves instigation physical contact in order to find what THEY have been missing in life. THEY are wiser then ANYONE is giving credit for. Many of these children have already been sexually molested BEFORE they ever get into a foster home, so THAT is what THEY know of 'love". I state all of this to illustrate a point. There MAY have been some buggery going on. BUT!!! Make no mistake, the juvenile WAS PART OF IT!!!! Everyone always jumps on the adults yet FAILS to take into consideration that the juvenile had a BIG part in it. Im NOT saying that ANY SEXUAL ABUSE IS RIGHT!!!! A foster child sees EVERYTHING done to THEM as some crime or injustice. Its understandable that they do so, but that same persecution complex can definatly SKEW anything remembered. You must also remember that children DO NOT have the LIFE EXPERIENCE needed to determine the outcomes of situations. In doing a public records search I didn't find ANY substantiated claims of sexual abuse. It seems the poster who stated that this was a camp for EXTREMLY troubled children was correct. It appears as if this was a camp of last resort. So it wouldn't surprise me if the person who is posting about sexual abuse is either confused or just misremembering.

One of the first things that needs to be understood is what the ranch was and who was there and why.   The ranch was in fact a facility for mentally disturbed and criminally insane boys.   It wasn't a school or a camp,  And there were never any girls in treatment there.   An example of who was there is this... One boy on a dare by his friends used a hammer to smash his grandmothers head in, killing her in front of his friends.  another example... this boy thought he was profoundly deaf, yet he could hear a ticking watch behind him.  Some of the boys that came to the ranch thought they were actaully girls and often insisted on being called by the girl names they had given themselves.  These boys were there because there was no other place in the system that would take them.  The person who wrote the original complaint and many of the other followup complaints as well was also one of the boys on the ranch... He arrived on the ranch when he was 17 years of age. Now Leo didn't normally allow any of the boys to remain after their 18th birthday but on rare instances he did.   This boy was one of those instances.  He arrived at the ranch when he was 17 years old and he remained there for 17 + years before he was ordered by Leo to leave the ranch.  Now Leo wasn't being paid to keep this boy or should I say man, and this man had no skills that would have allowed the man to reintegrate into society.  so Leo gave this man the task of watering the plants and grass in exchange for therapy, food and a place to sleep.  This man had an extreme hatred of women and he often was verbally abusive to Ella and her daughters and he often made threats to Ella's life.  Even though he had only minimal contact with Ella.   This man would stand in front of you and kill small animals just for the fun of it and then lie to your face that he didn't do it.  This man was known for his ongoing threats to Leo and Ella.  In the end this man was ordered to leave the ranch because his threats had escalated and he was caught trying to force some of the youngest boys to engage in sex with him.    This man's name is (((REDACTED))) and he is only making these claims now because he knows Leo and Ella are dead and there will be no legal actions against him for his lies.  (((REDACTED))) will be a vegrant moving from place to place around the southwest.   Some of the other claims against Leo and Ella would be from some of the other boys who left the ranch within weeks or maybe months of getting there.   It must be remembered that many of these boys were extremely violent and some would have taken great pleasure in inflicting pain and injury on anyone there on the ranch.   The ranch actually ceased to take any new clients in 1976 at which time 5 or 6 of the boys left the ranch. The remaining boys would slowly leave over the next 18 months.  There were no big school busses to take the boys away, There was no FBI or Police interogations.   In 1976 Leo was 75 years old and Ella was 72 years old... They decided then it was as good a time as any to retire.   After all the boys had gone there were just 4 people left and I know who all of them are.    Just as the criminal in prison will proclaim his innocense so will some of those who were sent to this ranch proclaim the abuses inflicted upon them.   There is no truth to the criminal's innocense just as there is no truth to the claims of abuse by these people.  

I know who you are Donald and I know when you came to the ranch and how you left the ranch.   I also know that you were never beaten and you never spent 2 weeks in bed because of anything.   I also know you were only there at the ranch for about 8 months and not the 2 and a half years you claim you were there.   I also know you only had the IQ of a 7 year old because you couldn't even read or write your own name.   So stop lying and tell the truth..  You ran away from the ranch because you didn't want to learn how to read and write.

Other sworn testimony showed the same pattern of abuse and molestation occured over a period of nearly 30 years. Kids who were there in 1960, testified to the same things the kids said in 1978.

Accordingly, the Stein's license was revoked,  they paid a fine, and they were ordered to have to no contact with any children under the age of 18. Today, they would be registered Sex offenders.

As for the Stein children, Les Stein, flunked out of College, at the University of Arizona. His Father gave him a job as a "Counselor". His job was to be the enforcer. Les admitted  brutally beating these vulnerable, handicapped and retarded kids.

After the Stein ranch closed down, Les, who was already a drug addict,  found himself living on the street in San Diego, diagnosed as mentally ill.

Laura Stein, the eldest daughter,  was also molested by her Father. Laura has been married and divorced several times.

Bobby Stein, also got into drugs and gambling, and was disowned by his Mother.

It is a matter of public record that, in 1978, after an FBI, DPS and CPS investigation,  the State of Arizona revoked Stein's license, and shut them down. The writer above is a liar and a coward.

Moreover,  the Court ordered that neither Leo or Ella be allowed to have any contact with children under the age of 18. Today they would have been made to register as Sexual Predators.

Both of them admitted to beating, slapping and abusing the children. They said it was necessary to scare them, as the kids sesnt to their "ranch" were disturbed and needed the beatings.

One witness, a friend of Laura Stein, the oldest daughter, said that Les Stein, the oldest brother, was caught m************ in front of her, while she was on a sleep over at Steins house.

Another witness said a young girl named Robin lived with the Stein family, ostensibly to get "therapy". Instead, for over a year, she was sexually abused (raped) repeaedtly by Stein.

I think it is you that has the problem, not Leo and Ella,  The last time I saw Leo he was about 78 years old and that was 30+ years ago and Ella was only slightly younger than he was.  That would make them over 100 years old now if they were actually alive..   The fact that you are bringing all this up now suggests that you are the one who has the problems.  Neither Leo or Ella were ever charged with any crime even after a long multi state investigation.  It was found that all the allegations were false stories made up by boys who where know pathological liars.   None of your information fit with the facts and the facts you do give are vague generalizations and accusations for which you give no supporting facts that can be verified in any way.   Here are some facts, The ranch was shut down in 76 not 78 and it was done voluntarily by Leo.  There was never any attempt by anyone to con or defraud the public.  This always was a boys ranch for mentally disturbed boys.  It was given the appearance of a school by Leo to give the boys a sense of self esteem.  There was a library with well over a thousand books in it just for the boys to read.  Leo bought elementary readers from the local school so the boys who could not read could learn how. There was a full basket ball court, 3 volleyball courts, an area for baseball or football to be played.  The boys ate some of the best food money could buy.  In the early 80s Leo and Ella sold the ranch and moved to northern Arizona to a quiet retirement community.  They were never charged at any time with any crime.  So there is absolutely no basis for any of your wild and false accusations which you have never offered any substantial evidence to support any of your claims.

All the skeptics who responded just proves how Sandusky got away with it for so many years.  Nobody wants to believe their 'friends' or heros are capable of acts such as these.  The first formal complaint for Sandusky was 1998.  Question is how long was is going on before there was a complaint.  Your reaction to this complaint shows exactly how the Stein's got away with it for so long.  Better start opening your eyes people as these are not isolated events.

I was there in 1971-1972, not 1970-1971.

I did a lot of work for Leo and Ella and I was there during the time of he shut down.  The facts are that Ella very seldom had any contact with the boys other then when the meals were prepared.  Leo and his staff (all adults who had been boys on the ranch at one time and had successfully integrated back into society) where the only ones to have contact with the boys on a daily basis.  Les, Leo's oldest son was away at school in California. Laura had recently finished High school (which by the way was right next door to the ranch.).  Bobby lived in Phoenix. Caroline wasn't there because she went to a private school of arts.  

 The kids schedule was pretty much like any other kids, they got up at 6am and breakfast was about 7:30, by about 8:30 breakfast was finished and the kids went to do chores which amounted to basic housekeeping. when these were finished the kids went to classes.  Many of the kids could not read or write even their own names.  Other kids were what I would call prodigies and they taught the other kids how to read, write and do math.  About 10:00am the kids were called to group. not all kids went everyday.  Lunch was about 11:30 and after lunch there was free time until about 3:00pm when it started cooling off and then the kids played ball until dinner which was about 5:30 or 6:00pm.  Most nights there were small groups that started about 8:00pm and stopped at 10:00pm    There was no set bed time however the younger kids did go to their dorms by 10:00pm. 

As for the actual shutdown,  As I said I was doing a lot of work there and I never saw any police there and after the investigation was over only the kids who chose to leave of their own free will did so. I think 5 or 6 kids. 35 kids remained.  the shut down was not forced and no legal action was ever taken against Leo and Ella.  at the time Leo was 75 years old and simply decided that was a good time to retire.  I frequently interacted with the boys there and 98% of the time they were great kids.  Any abuse these kids suffered happened long before they came to the ranch.  Leo and Ella made sure these kids were well fed and always had new clothes, shoes and boots.  

 I was there for about 8 months working for Leo and I never saw any abuse of any kind..  Dave if you were there at that time I probably knew you.  if I remember correctly there were 3 Davids there about that time.   There were no real fences around the 40 acre property and the front gate was always open. There were locks on the doors to keep intruders out but there was nothing stopping the boys from leaving anytime they wanted.   The person making these absurd claims of abuse was probably one of the kids who was sent to the ranch but after a short trial stay there was rejected by Leo as being to unstable to be treated under those open conditions.  I saw Leo and Ella a few years after all the kids were gone (about 1985) and they were getting ready to sell the ranch because it was too big and they were too old to take care of it.  Oh and for the record Ella was a concert pianist.  As for the Anti Semitic name calling.... Leo and Ella were Jewish so its highly unlikely that ever happened. 

During 1970-1971 I was best friends with Carolyn Stein and spent a great deal of time at the ranch.  I never saw an indication that those sorts of things were going on.  We also spent time interacting with the boys, and I never saw any signs of physical abuse.  The Steins were Freudian in there approach to therapy, which might explain the Oedipus complex theory.  If these things were going on, they hid it well.

There is no question that Leo and Elanore "Ella" Stein were perverted, sick and nasty criminals. They stole the kids' mail, and when cash was sent, pocketed the cash! The Stein's 4 children were also involved. Leslie "Les" Stein is the eldest. He flunked out of college, and went to work for his Mom and Dad as a "Counselor". Laura Stein is a 60's something old lady. She has been married several times, and possibly was molested by her father, Leo Stein. No one is sure, but she always has "issues" with men.

Robert "Bobby" Stein was the 3rd child. He was always a "sissy" kind of child, who never quite measured up to his brother. He, too, was a drug addict, doing drugs with his Salome High school GF  and  with his brother at the Stein Ranch. After the Stein's were busted and shut down, Bobby moved out of Arizona.

The youngest child is Carolyn Stein. Nobody knows much about her. She was sent away to a private school, and only returned infrequently.

Leo and Ella Stein were monsters, and sadly, hundreds of boys suffered mightily. The irony is that their own children, clearly, also were adversely affected by their parent's  sick behavior, which were forced to witness and live with for decades.

I was one of the folks who prosecuted the Stein's for the molestation and child abuse they perpetrated on young children for nearly 25 years.

The Steins were GUILTY as charged.  We interviewed nearly 50 children who had been residents of this Ranch.  The testimony came from children who had been there at different times, and did NOT know each other.  It was eerie and creepy to hear children tell the SAME story which corroborated each other.  Children who had been there in 1959 told us the identical things the children said in the 1970s.

Leo Stein would spit in the childrens face, and beat them for dropping a ball in a game.  Ella Stein fondled the young boys, and told them it was ok to have an urge to want sex with her.  The children were made to work all day doing the hard labor, and were fed very little.  Later, at night, the children were made to have participate in group therapy where Leo Stein would rant and rave, slap, punch and kick the boys, call them vile names, including anti-Semitic remarks aimed at the Jewish children.  Leo kept these sessions going until 1 or 2 am, and then demand that the boys be up again at 6am to start work.  This sleep deprivation led to the children being disoriented and complaint with all the Steins wishes.

I read where one contributor asked a very profound question. He asked why none of the children ever reported the Steins criminal conduct to them.  This is a wonderful question.  The answer is that Leo and his wife had brainwashed these children by keeping them in captivity. The children had no television, radio, telephone, or mail.  The children were 100% totally dependent on the Steins for their survival.
 
This was a classic case of Child Abuse at its worst. Abused people identify with their abusers and accordingly want to please them so they wont be abused anymore.  It is called the Stockholm Syndrome, which all people who are held captive and abused suffer.

It seems that you do not have a legitimate rip off, you just have an axe to grind and this is an outlet for you to vent.
