I received an offer by mail from Elmo's Learning Adventure in June 2011. The offer stated that if I paid $3.47 shipping & handling I would receive a free sesame street gift for my child. This offer seemed reasonable to me with no strings attached.

Over the course of several months they sent the gift in seperate shipments. I began to think it was strange but I thought to myself, I didn't provide my credit card or check information so there's no way they charged me for these items & just thought it was an incentive or a strategy by the company to encourage people to purchase from them.

The first week of November 2011 I received a letter from North Shore Agency(A National Collection Agency.) The letter stated that I owed $43.07 to Elmo's Learning Adventure. I called the number provided & spoke to a Carly who finally after some persistance agreed to waive the entire amount.

It is now December 2011 & I just received a letter with the company logo i m p at the top. The letter stated that by sending the $3.47 for shipping & handling that I agreed to pay for future shipments. I am now very outraged so I call costumer service again & wait between 5 & 10 minutes on hold. This time the person I get offers to waive half of the amount. I am furious by this point & tell her that I will not be paying any of it. I told her that I was sending every bit of it back most of which is still in the packaging because my son is much too young for the material. She said that my balance would still remain even if I sent it back.

I will not be paying $40 for something that I could have gotten at the Dxxxx Gxxxxx   (((REDACTED)))for $10!

I ordered Elmo's Learning Adventure. I'll admit, for what you get, it's not cheap. It come's to $12 a package which is just a book, flashcards, and a learning activities book, however...I don't agree with the posts here. All the information I found is VERY CLEAR about pricing and policies. In fact, I didn't even pay for my first 3 shipments and they sent a very polite reminder letter. They then stop sending the books entirely if you don't pay, but still send reminders. They send an invoice with every shipment, so you know exactly what's being charged and that you ARE being charged. They also send seperate bills, in case for some reason you missed it. I just don't see how you could miss it? Especially when this person would have gotten an invoice for 6 months????

I've seen these same two complains posted out of PA, but couldn't find complaints elsewhere, which tells me this isn't really a rip-off type situation. Also, when you receive the gift, it is obvious what age group the set is four. My daughter is only 16 months so these books are still actually a little too old for her, but she is learning her colors and numbers and shapes.

There terms of use list exactly how to cancel. YOU CAN CALL AND CANCEL! Do you know how rare that is these days??????

Yes you do have to pay for any orders that have already been shipped before you canceled, that's all. Any order has a 10 day return policy! If in ten days you don't like it, you can send it back. Waiting 6 months is not realistic.

So my only complaint is that I wish they'd send a little bit more material for the 12 bucks every 3 weeks but the flashcards are large, colorful and durable and the books are hard covered. And the learning adventures are geared for my daughters age range when right now there's not many book programs that are.

So far, no complaints.

FYI: These sets are created by Seseme Street not just some Fly By Night pcompany.

Actually the offer is very misleading & OBVIOUSLY the company's intentions are to take advantage of people, which I find to be even more appalling since it's marketed to children. I offered to send the entire set back (still in packaging) how is that not exceptable? It's not exceptable because they are SCAM ARTISTS!

@ Batty15, firstly your opening sentence says I'm compaining because I got this stuff for $3? Did you even read my report? I have a judgement against me for 40 some $s & how can you assume that I am on a "high horse" or that I don't pay my way through life? You don't know me & you couldn't be more wrong! I have worked hard for everything that I have & I am setting an OUTSTANDING example for my child. For a complete stranger you are very rude & judgemental. I will pray for you!

You got six books, 18 activity cards and a bunch of other cool colorful stuff for your kid for 3 bucks, and you're complaining?

It says clearly that you will receive other packages on a trial basis and that you can call and cancel anytime. I believe that the truth is this: You knew about the charges ( how could you not?)  but you figured you would scam THEM for as much as you could because you didn't give them your credit card info. So basically, they trusted that you would pay, like the old school way, and you took THEM for a ride.

I am sure you got notices to pay with each shipment. So you knew about the charges. You just didn't care that they were trusting you to pay and sending you their products. You were milking them for every "free" thing they would send you. (In your mind it was free, because you had no intention of paying).

So get off your high horse, ***hole. And set an example for your kid. Pay your way through life.

That offer is not a rip off...

My wife and I are looking at this offer as we have just gotten one to. However, it clearly states that you will get a bill with each shipment requesting 12 bucks within 10 days. That if you decide you no longer want it to call them and cancel to end your program subscription. Reading this "rip off" report, the person clearly states they only did the initial 3 dollar enrollment fee. Then assumed because they had no credit card or bank information on him, they could not bill him for anything. Then eventually, because he kept each shipment and did not call to cancel at all, he eventually got turned over to collections. So either he did not read the material and agreement before he signed up or thought he could just not pay those charges since they didnt have any credit card or bank information on him, as he said in his report.

We found that this offer is also offered through the sesame street dot org website and is offered from sesame street as well in partnership with that company.

The material we have and on the website says:

"All I pay is $3.47. Then, every three weeks I'll receive a new Elmo's Learning Adventure set with a Storybook, 6 Adventure Cards, and Activity Book, to try on a 10-day risk-free trial basis. If I decide to keep the set I pay only $10.95 plus $1.25 shipping and handling. There is no minimum to buy and I may cancel at any time" Call us within 10 days of receiving a package and let us know we wont send anything else!

that means with a 40 dollar something back bill he must have missed 4 payments with 4 shipments over 12 months and never noticed in the printed material that he had to pay 10.95 or call to cancel to stop shipments sounds highly doubtful to me.
