Like too many other innocent, victimized consumers, I had a Providian Mastercard 3 years ago, which was sold to Emerge. Upon receiving the Emerge card in the mail and reading several negative reports about the company, I cut the card up without ever using it. For two+ years, I have been paying Emerge for the original Providian debt of right at 1500.00. Without ever making another purchase, my balance is now up to 2147.00.
Due to extenuating circumstances, I got behind on the payments in Feb. of this year. These people have called me on my cell phone up to 20 times per day (documented). They are rude, aggresive and totally unacceptable. I received an offer from them in the mail to sign up for a program at 0% interest to pay the card off. I made the mistake of calling them to inquire about this from my work phone. They gave me until May 20th to get back with them with a decision. Today, May 18th, I get a phone call at work (they apparently have caller ID) harassing me about making a payment. I never provided them with my work number, nor gave them permission to contact me at work. Isn't there some law against this? Maybe I should feel guilty, because I am the debtor, but 2 years worth of payments toward an original balance of 1500.00, which is now 2147.00. Haven't I paid them enough? Where does it all end? Any advice? I have really had it.

The Fair Debt Collection Act does say that if you tell them you do not wish to have them to call you at work they are suppose to stop. The full rules are on the http://www.ftc.gov site. If they after you do this still contact you at work contact the FTC and inform them about it.
