Spring 2006 Greeted us with a well planed trip up to the northern reaches of Saskatchewan. A trip that had been planned for 8 months. Upon arrival by float plane the hunters from the previous hunt were on thier way out as we were arriving. After speaking to the group we learned that there were only 2 bear spotted during the 6 day hunt for 4 hunters. Our group consisted of 2 hunters from Louisiana and 2 hunters from Illinois. Don Brown the owner of Ena Lake Lodge had stated that he had guided Fishing and bear hunting trips for the outfitter that we had hunted and fished with the previous season and decided to open up a lodge of his own. Don made a point to let us know that his area was just as productive as the previous years outing in both the quality and numbers of bear and fish. Not Even Close!! The baits were set and run on occasion not daily. The 4 Hunters in camp hunted a total of 6 bait sites when we were told there were 30+ active baits in the area. We saw a grand total of 2 bears for the entire week. Now don't get me wrong I have been in the hunting buisness for 25 years and I know that hunting is hunting. But this is the worst experiance one could imagine. It seemed to me as well as the other hunters and fishermen in camp that it was just a scam. I would never nor would I ever recommend Ena Lake Lodge or Don Brown to anyone. I have hunted all over the U S and Canada and have had bad hunts due to weather etc but the reputible outfitters did everything they could to make our hunts sucessful. And when I say sucessful, I do not necessarily mean harvesting an animal. I mean enjoying the experience. With that said Sportsmen Beware when it comes to Ena Lake Lodge and Don Brown.

Don Brown knows no truth

AUTHOR: Chuck - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, October 26, 2007

Don is correct. Dan was a great guide and worked hard with the resourses that his employer gave him to work with. I don't recall in my post ever critisizing Dan nor would I. I would hunt with Dan again. Don on the other hand is full of bull. There were 2 bears sighted all week by 4 hunters. I had a wound and Bill harvested a bear. Dave the other hunter Don is speaking of seen 00000000. As did Bobby. Don said that he previously guided at Camp Grayling and the fishing and hunting was as good if not better. Don you know that you dont hold a mosquito bite on a bears butt to Grayling as you claim. This same group hunted in Alberta this year 2007, and everyone tagged out on 2 QUALITY bear. I never said I was a booking agent nor claim to be the GREAT hunter. As stated in my post hunting is hunting and everyone knows that but a beautiful lodge does not make a operation 5 star. Don had a cook and guide quit on him the week that we were there. The hunt previous to ours there were 2 bear harvested, not the number that Don claims. Hunters and fishermen beware!!!!!!!

Lets hear the truth about Ena Lake Lodge

AUTHOR: Ena Lake - (Canada)

POSTED: Thursday, October 25, 2007

I am Don Brown the outfitter identified by Chuck LeBlanc in the report about Bear hunting at Ena Lake Lodge and I can tell you the report leaves a lot of the truth out. Mr. LeBlanc booked a hunt with Ena Lake Lodge for himself and a friend Bobby Davis. Chuck claimed to be an experienced hunter and a booking agent for hunts.

Some of what Mr. LeBlanc left out of his report include the fact that both he and his buddy Bobby smoked like crazy and would typically go through a package of cigarettes each in an evening of sitting on a bear stand. The guide that I had assigned to Chuck and Bobby is a certified guide having taken a two year guide school and has worked for us at Ena Lake for the past 4 years. Dan is an excellent, full time, professional guide and even with his coaxing, Chuck and Bobby would not leave their cigarettes alone for even one evening.

Even with them smoking so much Mr. LeBlanc seems to forget that he actually had an opportunity at killing a bear but missed the shot and only wounded the bear. Dan and Chuck spent about 8 hours tracking the bear to no avail. The next evening I joined them in the search and spent 4 hours combing the area with no luck.

Our policy is that if a hunter wounds a bear that is considered his tag and the hunt is over. Out of pity, I allowed Chuck to continue hunting for the rest of the week even though he had wounded a bear and should not have been able to continue.

Did Chuck also forget to mention that he landed 7 trophy Lake Trout during the week they were there? I guess the best fishing he has ever had doesn't count as part of a good hunting / fishing combination trip.

If Mr. LeBlanc calls himself a hunter he is misleading everyone, including himself! He may be a shooter but real hunters don't act the way Chuck did.

We are very proud of our hunting and fishing success. The group of 4 hunters preceding Chuck and Bobby went 3 for 4 and were very happy. Prior to leaving the lodge they booked a return trip for the following year. The other two hunters that were at the lodge the same time as Chuck also both killed bears and were very happy. But then they were hunters and didn't sit in the stand smoking all night.

I would be happy to respond to any questions anyone might have on this subject. I have not heard from Mr. LeBlanc since they were up and I would think that anyone that had a concern as he has reported would have at least mentioned something at the lodge or written a note to express his displeasure once he got home. Hiding behind a website like this does nothing for his credibility. If you want the truth, call me. I can show you the photos of Chuck with his fish and give you the name and number of his guide. We are a reputable operation with a 5 star resort in northern Saskatchewan. We have built the business from scratch with numerous repeat clients every year. You don't do that by ripping off you clients.
