Earlier this week I received a call from 800-305-5557. The person asked for my name, then asked if I lived at "X" address. I said that I didn't, and asked what this was about. They told me that I would need to confirm my social and my current address before they would tell me anything.

Of course I'm not going to give some random person this information without just cause, and so again I asked what this was about. They refused to tell me why they were calling, who they were, or even what city "X" address was located in. When I asked how they got my phone number, since it is relatively new, they said their "client" provided it to them. I then asked who their client was. They refused to tell me. They again asked for my personal information, I again asked what the call was about, but the man on the phone then said "The calls will continue until you cooperate".

So when I got home, I looked up the number, located the company information and website, as well as the reports on this website. I've also found links for class action lawsuits in Illinois against this firm.

The last two days I've been receiving automated calls with a tracking number, but when I call they seem to be closed.

I am afraid to give these people any information, due to what I've read online. I guess my only option would be to file a report with the Attorney General's office, and put some sort of statement on my credit report that I may be possibly exposed to some kind of fraud.

I've found links on the Attorney General page for Florida, detailing the restrictions placed on debt collections agencies, and one of them is that they are required to supply me the information as to who they are, what they are calling about, and the details of the 'charge'.

I guess my questions are: a) do I have the right understanding of this law, and b) if I file a report, do I file in my home state, or in the state the company is located?
