Lance Handel came to us wanting to timber our property.  He walked the property with us and told us that he likes to get all the authorities involved in the treeing process.  He makes promises to leave your property in better shape than when he started. If you say yes, he will be on your property the next day.

He then asks, how would you like paid. every week, every two weeks etc.  The problem with that is, you have to bug him to death to even get a check.  At first, he will throw you some money to keep the job going. 

He timbered 175 acres of our property in Kentucky for 7 months and only paid us $7000.  He will not answer his phone and his addresses in Lexington come up as bogus.  His companies are listed at certain properties in Lexington but someone else lives there.

Evergreen Products is rated F by the BBB and I know why now.

He is a true con artist.   Do not let him on your property or even close to it.

I want to say that Lance made contact with me about the property we own in the Lexington Ky area and asked to meet with me about settling on the timber.  He explained to me the processes that take place during the job and brought to the table supporting evidence of all the timber cut and sold.  I then spoke to the contractor he hired and their numbers were very close.  Lance settled up with us without any problems or attorneys.  I suggest to anybody that is thinking about timbering their property to be on site and log all movement themselves if you want to feel secure about what is happening.  Lance was always easy to work with and we did get this settled to our satisfaction.

Follow Up to Dealings with Evergreen Products

As a follow-up to my family's dealings with Lance Handel and Evergreen Products, I wanted to say that Lance followed up with all of his promises and went through with the settlement agreement. As in all transactions of any kind, I recommend getting your own lawyer to look over any contracts and specifying specific terms and agreements.

Update to My Former Ripoff Report

My attorney and I subsequently met with Lance. We came to an agreed upon temporary "settlement" amount, pending some further investigation. Still not sure we got entirely what we are entitled to, but Lance did cooperate fully in the meeting.  Let's say this --- I don't trust any of the loggers in KY at this point. There are no real regulations in effect at the "buyers" end (Lance is just a broker for the mills) where the mill that Lance and his buddies dealt with in Ghent actually paid for all of the lumber that was hauled down there. We also got a sworn statement from Lance that he would do the needed reseeding and cleaning up the property that he said he was going to do. Will update further as Lance does the work. I will say that since threatening Lance with prosecution (and I did this personally without my attorney's input after advising me), Lance has cooperated fully so far. Like I said, I will update further as Lance does/does not do the remainder of the work that he said swore with a signed affidavit that he would  do.

Caveat:  People, please get a contract, and not just the contract Lance gets you. It is too vague. And this goes with any contract you deal with. Have your attorney look it over before any contract you sign about anything. You must think things through and put in very specific terms to what you want done and how fast you get paid, etc.

Lance is, indeed, very slick. We too, think we have been taken by him to some extent. We believe he has ripped us off also. He also works with other people, one of them being Mike Alexander out of Walton (Alexander Logging) and two other loggers (the two guys who actually did the cutting). His corporation has been listed as in "bad standing" with the Kentucky Secretary of State's office and Mike Alexander shows up on the Kentucky Department of Forestry's "bad actors" list. They both are in cahoots with each other. I'm not sure the two loggers (cutters) have anything to do with it and may just be getting paid by Lance for their work, but my suspicion is that they are all liars. I've got the names and phones of the two cutters who worked our property also, and Mike Alexander's phone number also. Mike and his wife own a small piece of property in Walton.  Lance has all of his assets in his wife's name so he doesn't have any equipment/property to put a lien against. We had to threaten to take it straight to the County Prosecutor's office to get any action out of him whatsoever (and I mean strongly threaten).  This is what my attorney advised me to do. I'm still not sure we got what we were entitled to. I have the name of one other witness who also got ripped off by Lance and is who is willing to testify in court about his shady dealings.
