I received a quote by phone from Continental Express for $285 to move ONLY my furniture from one house to another in the same city, about one mile away. This quote was for three men for three hours. The woman I spoke w/ on the phone said that this would be PLENTY of time. She said they would likely have time to take boxes as well. This did not work out at all as planned.

The three movers arrived at my home and ONLY TWO of them actually did any moving. One of the men sat in the truck for about 75% of the time. They worked extremely slowly. The third hour passed and they hadn't even finished loading the truck!

I didn't have ANY boxes or loose items for them to take at all. My family had moved everything else out the day before. I asked them not to remove ANY items from the closets, since I had planned to throw most of it away. I asked them to please only take the furniture and mattresses.

When the third mover (the one who sat in the truck the whole time) brought me the contract to sign, I noticed a list of materials that they charge for (I was originally told that they do not charge to wrap anything) and asked him MORE THAN ONCE not to use any of these materials. I explained my family would help me move anything leftover that needed to be wrapped with these materials because I did NOT want to pay for this. He said okay, so when I signed this list, I SPECIFICALLY marked "0" next to the total # used of each of these items. When the mover noticed this he was upset and said I was not supposed to write on this list. I mentioned AGAIN that I did NOT want him to use these materials, so why did it matter that I marked "0". At this time, he admitted that they did wrap one of my mirrors. I asked him not to wrap ANY MORE items. He took the list away from me really quickly, but I noticed the charge was for about $30. This upset me because the mirror only cost me $9. Why in the world would I want to spend $30 to wrap a $9 mirror?!!!

I asked the man again not to use any more materials that would cost me and he pretty much shrugged me off and went back to the truck.

When they FINALLY finished and we went to the new house, two of the men got out of the truck and just sat there (While they were charging me for this time!) leaning against the truck and the one was sitting inside. I thought this was strange. About ten minutes later, they brought me a bill for $745 (I was quoted $285!) and REFUSED to show me the paperwork to explain how they came up with this amount. After a few minutes of arguing with him, he showed me the paperwork.

They charged me $321 for packing materials!!! This is after I SPECIFICALLY asked them to stop this! They also charged me for a 30 minute drive. The drive was a total of about 5 blocks! I got there in less than 2 minutes and they arrived about 2 minutes after me, and this was because I left before them.

They refused to remove my items from the truck until I signed and paid, so I had no choice. As I looked at this list, they charged me for things they didn't even use! They charged me over $28 for a "mattress cover", but they didn't use a "mattress cover". They wrapped the mattresses in shrink wrap, which I was told MORE THAN ONCE, AND I HAVE IN WRITING was free of any charge. They also charged me $124 to wrap 3 more mirrors, after I specifically asked them not to! And they also charged me $71 each to wrap items from my closet that I was going to throw away, and I had specifically asked them not to take anything from the closets in the first place!
I have pictures of everything!

My husband and I just bought our first home and have a baby on the way. We cannot afford this!

As I sat upset and crying in my garage, after just being robbed for almost $500, one of the movers came up to me and said very mean and sarcastically, "IT'S JUST MONEY."

I cannot believe what just happened to us, and I hope these SCAMMERS don't get away with this!

File a complaint with the CPUC and the BBB

AUTHOR: Parthia - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, July 08, 2008

I currently have a complaint filed with the CPUC and the Better Business Bureau. They are under investigation and if you log a complaint it will help others avoid having such a horrible experience.

I had almost every piece of furniture (that they actually moved) broken. I know how you feel about the price being jacked up.

They basically held my items hostage until I paid them over 1300 over quoted price.

I Don't Think You Get It, Jim!

AUTHOR: Cgloria - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, July 08, 2008

I think definitely understand now that moving is NOT cheap, but thanks for your wise imput, Jim.

You say you understand that I didn't want any of the additional materials used, but I don't think you do. They used these materials after I SPECIFICALLY told them not to, and they told me they would not. It isn't my problem that they are dumb and cannot follow directions, and I don't think the problem is necessarily that they're dumb. They are liars and cheaters and they are sleazy people.

They didn't NEED TO PROTECT my items, as you say! I told them not to take the items!!! They didn't need to TOUCH those items!

And you say that I shouldn't choose a mover based only on price. You don't know how I found this company, or how many other companies I got quotes from. You should probably get your facts straight before you try to give people your opinion. I got quotes from a lot of other companies, and they were all around the same price. I chose this company for convenience and because their customer service was good when I originally called. I TRUSTED THEM. I'M NOT CHEAP!

And by the way, the company knew they were wrong and refunded my money.

Do you work for this web site, or do you just have way too much time on your hands?

Moving is Not Cheap

AUTHOR: Jim - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, July 01, 2008

gloria, a local move - no matter the distance - is not cheap, even with the movers you got. See $95/hour for 3 men assuredly got you 3 men off a street corner and were not professional movers. You would have been better off with one of your husband's friends doing the move in a U-Haul. Certainly it would have been cheaper. In addition, it would have been better if the stuff you intended to toss was infact tossed before the move. Movers are the grunt force of the company, the lowest paid, and their intelligence relates to moving only.

One thing you should know is that the $285 you were quoted is really only for the labor; materials are not included. I understand you wanted no materials, but the reason why they use materials is to protect your items for transport. Yes, a $9 mirror requires a $30 box. However, if the mirror breaks without the box, you won't get $9 for replacement of the mirror - you might get $1. If that mirror happened to have sentimental value (i'm not saying it does, but the mover assumes everything they move does), he will have more hell to catch than you can believe.

As the title indicates, moving is not an inexpensive venture. It costs more than you think it will, cost more than you're told, and sometimes it can turn out really badly. It's why you should choose a reputable mover, and not one based on price only, as you no doubt, now know why.

I forgot to mention that they broke a door completely off of our entertainment center, and didn't even tell us.
They also Dented and scratched a couple doorways in my new home that were newly painted.
I also just noticed in the confirmation email that they sent me, that gas and mileage were included in the original quote for $285, but they charged me an additional amount on my final bill!
