When it comes to storing your personal property who should you trust?
For many years I have stored personal and business property at a number of well known and not so well known storage facilities on the East coast, and the West coast and in Texas. In fact, now that I think about it the best storage facilities that I found to beat a fair price, as well as clean and secure has been Public Storage.
Over the last few months and as the result of our move I had to locate a suitable place to store our personal effects. Living in Montgomery County Maryland this time, I had lots of choices. Perhaps the one thing I did notice was just how expensive the storage companies have upped their prices.
After visiting and inspecting several facilities I chose EZ Storage over my preferred Public Storage. Some of the most important factors that helped me to reach my decision; the street access to the facility, security, hours of access, rate, special promotions, storage unit size, ease of getting my stuff in and out as well as personnel. Whether the people onsite were helpful or not as well as the moving equipment. Also, if they drew your attention to some of the fees and when you incur them.
At the time and after having checked the storage facilities for what I was looking for the Ez Storage facility in Germantown seemed suitable. However during the process of completing the paperwork it was made clear that this seemingly newer and more sparkling storage company fails to allow customers the ease of making your payment via a secured site on the Internet.
Although EZ Storages representative at the time indicated that access to pay ones bill was forthcoming, which still has not happened. In fact, in my communications via e-mail to their operations manager makes it clear that they are not at all sure when they will have their system up and running.
I write this article to draw attention to the fact that my experience over the years using these facilities has been a very pleasant experience overall. However, as I write my wife and I had experienced an emergency situation that placed her out of commission while we were in our travels in the Mid-West. One of my primary concerns while travelling was my concern about paying this storage facilitys bill.
In my case, a simple problem was made more complicated by the EZ Storage people - who fail to offer customers the easy option of paying ones bill anytime, anywhere through the Internet. In our case, with a simple out of town emergency situation, the EZ storage guy said we needed to be there to pay him while ignoring our circumstance. I might add the person I spoke with was even less sympathetic concerning making it easy for us to effect payment by PayPal, Western Union or any of the other more convenient services.
Are Legal Loopholes Just Another Shady Trick To Rip-Off Your Goods?
The thought did enter my mind, as I listened to this Ez Storage representative named Chuck. He talked with apprehension and with little concern about our situation. He seemed only concerned with getting the payment, in their prescribed and limited way. In fact, when I had mentioned that I had spoken by e-mail with a Mr. Bob Snukis he was almost adamant. He made it clear that he was the one that handled payment processingbut yet he showed little help in resolving the problem.
He had no solution for accepting a simple payment through routine sources, such as e-check, PayPal or anything else. It was clear that he offered little assistance and not inspiring h-o-p-e for dealing with this simple matter. In fact, after talking with him it was clear to me that if he represented Ez Storage thats a company we will be soon ending our business relationship with.
A great lesson was indeed learned here. Stay with Public Storage. They offer convenience when making a timely payment, their overall charges are reasonable, and most importantly their people are polite!
For my money I would never recommend or suggest storage companies that dont offer the convenience of how and when you can pay your bill. It just might be the trap that they use to gain control over your business or personal property.
A final word to the wise would be to use a facility that has people who express care and concern when working to solve customers problems. Steer clear of those outfits that take a small, relatively simple problem and turn it into a major one such as what these folks did to us.
I would also strongly suggest that consumers keep an eye out for storage facilities that take advantage of their customers and report them to the Better Business Bureau, State Attorney General, Rip-off.com, local neighborhood consumer oriented groups and tell your neighbors and friends so they can avoid during business with them.
