We bought an RCI/Fairfield timeshare through El Cid, a resort in Mazatlan, Mexico. The salesman lied to us about the timesharing, telling us we would receive benefits we did not receive. We are currently trying to dispute the initial charge on our charge card and have not made any payments. Fairfield and El Cid (also known as Operadora Turistica) have been sending us letters threatening to send us to collections.

El Cid tells us that they can't be responsible for what a salesman tells us, and RCI told us they would investigate but they can't do much either since El Cid is not part of them. I pointed out to RCI that they can do something because they obviously have a contract with El Cid for El Cid to sell their program for them and they could put pressure on El Cid to return our money or suffer consequences. Anyway, everyone is passing the buck and refusing to be responsible.

I also told RCI that we listened to a camground timeshare sales pitch and were told that they had to tell us the truth because periodically their parent company would send reps out who acted as potential customers and listened to their sales pitch to make sure they were tellins us the truth. I asked RCI if they did this and they said no. It seems to me that RCI and Fairfield are legally liable for not ensuring that the resorts who sell their timeshares are telling the truth about their timeshares.

How to use the RCI timeshare exchange system

AUTHOR: SammiF - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, January 08, 2014

RCI/Wyndham on an online exchange disables the ability to exchange without buying their $49 buying power guarantee. We tried on two computers to book without this fee, but the confirm without the fee button is locked out. Amazingly, we could book the week with the fee. They are getting so greedy with charging fees for everything and increasing them all the time. Meanwhile they put no inventory out for exchange but you could rent a good week for a big dollar amount. Stop giving your week to them and find other options!

#2 UPDATE Employee

RCI does not own any timeshares...

AUTHOR: Rml29 - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, January 15, 2009

I have been employed by RCI for nearly three years, and I can assure you that RCI does NOT OWN any timeshares--we are simply a timeshare exchange company. RCI does NOT employ the salesmen/women or those who lead the timeshare presentations. We are affilliated with resorts to allow our members more flexibility when owning their timeshare (so owners will not have to return to the same property at the same time each year).

Unfortunately, when RCI informed you we could investigate but not much else, what they were saying is true. As RCI is affilliated with thousands of resorts, and each resort has their own rules, regulations, and stipulations, it would be impossible for RCI to be held responsible for the resort employees and/or the mistakes they make.

I would recommend contacting the manager of the Owner Services department at your home resort. I would also recommend visiting complaintsboard.com, as you are not the first to have issues with El Cid resorts and misreresentation; maybe someone who has had a similar problem will be able to give you a better run-down of what to expect/what you can do. I hope this helps.

Response to Melody.
We are in the process of being taken to arbitration; as we also bought from Fairfield and have not paid them. We have tried to cancel ever since 7 days after purchase.
What can we do?
