I was with this company for 14 yrs. Believe me i know where everyone is coming from. This is one company that uses us beyond belief. They use us then throw us away like we are trash. They don't care at all. More than 65 hrs a week, no help, an freight everywhere. Then grade us low because we can't get it all done. If anyone can help please email me. We are worth more.

As of 3/1/04 i gave up my job after 14 yrs due to stress an issues with my D.M. I was headed for a nervous breakdown an tried to call an email HR. You think anyone cared??? NO! They never even called or answered my emails, an i was crying for HELP. When i quit they never ask me why after giving them 14 yrs. Now you think they care NO... They only care about themselves. They didn't want to hear the truth, that's why.

We all need to stick together an fight for our rights. Anyone hear of a lawsuit let me know. I worked off the clock all the time when i was an asst. manager an never got payed. As a manager only 30 minutes

In the morning was I doing manager's work. Then i unloaded
trucks, put up freight, mopped floors, straighten cloths, run reg. cleaned bathroom, mopped stockroom, I did the same as my employees the only difference was I didn't get over time pay because I was classified as a MANAGER. I was just an employee with a managers title.

#3 UPDATE EX-employee responds

I see the problem. People don't know the meaning of "manager".

"In the morning was I doing manager's work. Then i unloaded trucks, put up freight, mopped floors, straighten cloths, run reg. cleaned bathroom, mopped stockroom"

THIS IS ALL MANAGER WORK! People don't know the meaning of "manager". Manager does not mean that you sit in the office and deal with complaints and delegate all duties. Manager means that you have this list of things that HAVE to get done and you make sure they get done. Some of them you delegate out and what is left you do and anything else that didn't get done. A manager is not "above" their employees in that sense. As I have always told my employees (no longer with Family Dollar - I'm a property manager now), I will NEVER ask them to do anything I have not or will not do myself. When my husband and I were with Family Dollar, yes, we unloaded trucks, stocked shelves, performed Door to Floor duties, cleaned, ran registers, the whole works. IT IS PART OF THE JOB! I have not met a manager at ANY retail store (except big stores like Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, etc.) that don't do all of those things! And even in the big stores, they do some of them on a daily basis!

Now, my husband managed 3 different stores for Family Dollar AND was a clean up manager in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He worked 50 - 55 hours a week and EVERYTHING was done! Schematics were ALWAYS current, even though they changed quite frequently. Freight always went straight to the shelves from the truck. Follow the policies and it gets done in reasonable time! No, it's not easy and you don't have much "lazy" time. You actually WORK while you are there.

As for working off the clock... did your manager make you work off the clock? If so, did you report this to the DM or RM or anyone? Did you call the number listed on the poster that should be displayed in every back room and report it? If not, the company is not to blame.

Now, I no longer for Family Dollar and never will again. I don't think they ripped me or my husband off. I just think that the stress of it became a major strain on our marriage and no company is worth that.

#2 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Ex Assistant Manger Loved Last week Loathed This week

AUTHOR: Ex-assistant - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, March 17, 2005

I was hired by Family Dollar in November 2004 as an Assistant Manger, I was sent for my 2 weeks Training at what they called there Target or Training Store, I was Told by the Manager there That I was required to Read the 4 Strands of Management Books Take time and read them while your here, I was never given the opportunity to read the books, I was there to work with his other Assistants and keep his store running he then said I could read the books at the store I was going too not a problem The book issue is not what Im upset about although I was told I had to be tested on these books that I was never given an opportunity to read at a meeting last week and if I didn't pass I would be fired ( I passed by the way )

its the way I was treated and how other ex assistants and employees were treated by the store Manager, The assistant I replaced was fired the day I arrived supposedly because of poor work standards ( found out later he voiced his opinion that's when his work standards went down the craper ) should have seen the writing on the wall

the manager told me that his personal mission was to fire what he called the old regime of employees and the other assistant who was working there when the old manager was there before she stepped down He barred her from the store even though she still works for the company ( I should have seen the writing on the wall )

the other assistant was fired 2 weeks later for theft after a long steak out by the manager infront of the store She never took anything out of the store I was there for the last half hour of the steak out after I was called at home telling me I was needed to help total up the Numerous stolen items she had taken he stormed the store 5 mins before closing and told her that everything up front ( the shop backs ) she was going to charged with theft they were up there and according to him she had intended to steal them ) he told her she was going to jail and humiliated this poor woman she didn't go to jail and im confidant she will be found not guilty ( especially after I make a phone call today )

several employees have left the company because he has constantly harassed them about personnel matters that had nothing to do with family dollar or him ( again I should have seen the writing on the wall )

A New assistant was brought in after the other was fired the manager has done nothing but constantly pit one against the other between her and I saying she said this about what you did last night etc and vice versa and then her telling me what he said I felt like I had been put in the middle,I told them both I didn't want to hear it since being hired he has constantly told me that He Loves my work and im doing a great job and the DM loves me and my work this week After requesting Saturday off Sunday was my reg day off for the shift rotation week and I needed Monday afternoon off Minor Daughter had a long standing doctors appointment ( I knew I was going to pay heck for taking Saturday off even though I was told I had to attend a meeting for assistants the previous Monday and it was the only other day I could have taken off ) I went in at 6 am Tuesday to unload my 3rd truck in a row because he had to be off the previous 2 truck delivery days ( we were only supposed to be doing every other truck switching out between myself and the new assistant manager) I discovered that I was working everynight or closing shift the rest of the week I said something about it his comment was what are you complaining about you have had the last 4 days off after I corrected him and told him it was only 3 days I was joking he was not his whole attitude changed after the truck was unloaded I was called into the managers office and asked WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM I explained to him that I didn't have a problem he insisted that I did So I voiced my opinion about a few things ( Turns out that was the wrong thing to do ) and he didn't speak to me the rest of the day which was fine with me, ( I told my husband that I would look for a new job so I could get out of there the next day I had a bad situation arise with one of my Teenage Daughters that needed immediate attention by my self and her Dad It happened a 2 hours before my scheduled start time
I had to call off ( which I had never done to this point ) he told me he didn't believe me and that he knew I would be calling in and he stated that he wondered how much more of this kind of behavior he could expect from me I told him I didn't appreciate the accusations he said it wasn't a accusation it was speculation I told him either way I didn't appreciate it and That I had never given him reason to question my work ethic or honesty and that I never call in on a whim

the last company that I retired from after 25 years I had only called in 8 times births deaths and pneumonia,

Today after reading the postings on this and other web sites I became affraid that he might try to do something to me or set me up insome way that it seemed to be a common and accecpeted practice of Family Dollar that I went ahead and called him and told him I would not be returning and that I would bring my keys and uniform shirts in this evening and that I had not intended to leave this way but felt for my protection I should ...... he screamed that he knew I was going to screw him this way

There are so many things that I could list or detail here but it would just be a repeat of what everyone else has said and it would take me all day to list them the only thing That I havent seen that I will state is a memo that was received from Corp Office 2 weeks ago Stating that ANY Manager or Assitant manager that went over on payroll hours and dollars would have 1 verbal warning then they would be fired for not following company policy even though sales are up and there running less payroll dollars then the previous year for more sales
Thank you for letting me vent I feel much better
