June 6 2005- I begin class @ FR I am given an incomplete PowerPoint manual that is missing forms from the 'required forms' section. It is missing the 'welcome/info' section entirely. In our class we use equipment that is no longer being used by phlebotomy technicians. Furthermore, there is not enough supplies for everyone. One of our instructors "Mary" actually calls advanced HIV disease Full blown AIDS and (hello? health professionals should learn to treat all clients with respect, right?)attributes HIV specifically to q***r men and 'drug addicts'. It was an insult to a few folks in the room. How P.C.

In addition to this, I am a little unclear about the number of times someone can legally be poked with a venipuncture needle per day. We have all been poked and drawn from upwards of at least 7 a day.

6/17/05- class ends and the class test is scheduled for the following day. I explain to our instructor (Tralita) and program administrator (Mykael Lazzeri) that I am leaving town tonight. I am assured that when I return I can take my test anytime before 3 Monday thru Thursday. We also discuss my externship. I notify them that it is already set up to start June 20th upon my return.

6/28/05- I go to FR between 11am and 1pm to take exam and drop off externship paperwork (I ended up using city colleges externship venipuncture logs, as I have grown tired of requesting them from FR). I am told that I can't take exam because my file is incomplete. My response is "Yes I know, I was missing things from my binder that haven't been replaced, possibly." I am told later that my homework hasn't been done.

I explain that it was and there could have been some mix-up the last week of class when we are all given back our homework to be numbered. However, I re-turned it in. I have a conversation w/ Tom (the CEO of FR) about the inconsistencies, and he assures me I'll get a call when I can come to test once they "get to the bottom of things". I also explain I am going on tour in a few days. His response is "No problem, we'll handle it when you return in September"

6/05-9/05- I receive 3 messages from FR (2 from M.L.) stating their frustration in attempting to schedule my externship. Towards the end of my tour, I call M.L. to let him know that I have already done it and gave FR my venipuncture logs before leaving as proof. He tells me he did not receive them. I am assured once again I can take the test before 3pm Monday thru Thursday.

10/3/05- I show up at FR to take my test. It's a little after 9am. I am told that I cannot take the test, that I have to make an appointment to take the test. I mention Mykael's name. HE NEVER ONCE LEAVES HIS OFFICE TO ASSIST ME OR TAKES RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE MISINFORMATION I AM GIVEN. I have the pleasure of waiting over an hour and getting messages relayed to me via the receptionists there. I express that I am frustrated and want to schedule my BLS at Laguna Honda Hospital.

Unfortunately, I don't remember the date I took the class, however, I do remember it being on a Thursday within 2 weeks time. I also remember showing up to the class, it being canceled and nobody even bothers to call me. Livid, I call FR from my cell, walking away from Laguna Honda. I am informed that I need to get them my externship logs and my vaccinations are insufficient. I go to the clinic that has my medical chart and externship info and fax my TB/vaccinations, and re-send my externship info.

Jan/06- I restart the tedious process of dealing with these Fast response folks! Tiffany, a receptionist assures me that they have officially changed the file name to Ginny Ruth. Apparently FR misplaced several H.S. diplomas and mine was one of them. When it was recovered last month, she decided to consolidate my file into one name to avoid possible confusion. The earliest I can take my exam is the end of February. I am instructed to check with M.L. to confirm.

2/13/06 M.L. tells me to show up at my test date @7pm.The test is from 7to9pm. I remember arranging a ride for my partner to pick me up, the test must have been on a Wednesday or Thursday (possibly the 22nd or 23rd?) Unfortunately, I don't remember, I do however remember this; the test actually started at 6pm! Tom escorts me to the test room, asks who gave me the wrong info about the test time and then states he would 'talk to M.L. about that'. The testing instructors name is Edula. I turn in my test, and a manila envelope containing: Copies of SS card and DL Vaccination record sheet/TB results Additional copies of externship proof, Passport sized picture

3/15/06 I receive a letter from MMCI informing I've passed the test (despite only being given 1hour 10minutes to take it) I call Alix (my supervisor) to say Woo h*o, and contact Mykael about my BLS and certificate of completion. He does not call back. He does not email back.

4/6/06- I go to FR to check on the status of my certificate of completion. I make it a point to call every Wednesday and Friday morning. I leave messages on practically every extension. Then I am told by Tiffany that a woman named Kelly Cruz will be handling phlebotomy administration.

4/10-5/2- I call several times a week. This is NO exaggeration. I leave messages at ext.25(M.L.) ext.22(Tom), Kelly, and her supervisor Veronica. Detailed messages. Messages that include my phone #. No response. Fast response? No. No response.

5/11- I receive my BLS from fast response. Much like our phlebotomy class, it was under equipped with supplies. I will not go into the lack of professionalism THE ENTIRE CLASS experienced with the main instructor. It was pretty bad. Shocking really. After class I am informed again that my chart is incomplete. I am sitting idling waiting to meet Kelly for a little under 2 hours. Apparently, she takes 2 hour lunches.

My file is unable to be found the first hour. (A new employee looks for a good half hour for it. He mentions to me that he doesn't understand why the files are not alphabetized. I think to myself "how disorganized is this place to not alphabetize their students carts?") M.L. finally emerges to tell me that the manila envelope was never received. He also tells me that I haven't taken my national test. I ignore that false observation, as I am too frustrated to address it. I remind him of the inconsistencies in my learning manual and request all required forms. I am given blank copies of all the FR sheets (finally) and I go to double check my work at home.

5/12, 5/15, 5/17 I call Kelly to leave messages. On 5/24 I reach her. She asks me to fax her from a number I can receive faxes from at any time. On 5/26 Kelly assure me she will fax MMCI my completion certificate. She promises to prioritize it.

The following week, I am unable to get a hold of her, she is on vacation, but she leaves cell phone # on the outgoing message. I feel bad about contacting her on her vacation. I wait till the 5th of June to call her on her cell (the day before she is to return to FR. According to her voice mail) she tells me that M.L. has my file and despite her telling me she would fax it to MCCI on the 31st, she did not. I have tried to call ever since, and her voicemail is no longer taking calls. I leave a message with Veronica. I am under the impression Kellly is no longer employed there, but I am not definite of this.

My Desired Resolution:
1. Giving over my chart, certificate of completion and anything else owed to me from my chart, so I can handle my business. I want their commitment to prioritize me getting my license.

2. Letter of apology, an explanation, and possibly changing their name from "Fast Response" to "We'll Respond to You When We're Good and Ready"

My other wishes include:

Phlebotomy class instructors are required to tell students how many times they can be stuck LEGALLY DURING INSTRUCTION.

Students should also be given self care instructions (i.e. drink lots of water, don't exfoliate skin on arms, etc.) to help new students during this time.

That the receptionists Tiffiany and (?)Kimberly(?) do not take any heat for this. They were most honest and helpful to me.

That fast response alphabetizes it's charts.
That students are treated with respect. That they treat their staff with respect.

My BLS instructor, Zachary, was rude, impersonal and condescending, but I TRULY believe it may be due to the fact he is being treated poorly at work.

That all their classes from this day forward have current up to date supplies, and there should be enough for everyone in the class!
