Fatcow.com has done a lot to show they are running an unethical business. They advertise extremely low introductory prices for their hosting, and then raise the cost to an unreasonable amout, way out of line with their competition the following year.
Their costumer service reps on LiveChat speak VERY poor English. Usually it isn't too hard to understand them and wade through their poorly constructed sentences, but I have to speak like I'm talking to a mentally challenged 4 year old for them to understand me. Very slowly, with one very simple sentence at a time.

Their latest rip-off is this; My domain expired and I forgot about it. With any normal registrar this would just be a matter of renewing the domain. Not with FatCow. They hold your domain hostage for between 30 and 45 days, forcing you to pay $160 to release your domain, in addition to the renewal fee (which is already more than other registrars).
This is a totally unreasonable way for them to squeeze some extra money out of their customers. And for what? They may get a few dollars, but those who pay it are going to be annoyed and probably not use them again, and those who don't (like myself) are annoyed and will absolutely not register another domain through them. I have never had this kind of problem with Godaddy, where I will renew this domain and all future domains I have.

Redemption Fee still out of line with competition

AUTHOR: Stephanie - (United States of America)

POSTED: Monday, September 10, 2012

How much is it you pay to get the domain out of redemption? GoDaddy's redemption fee is half of FatCow's, and I read on another hosts's FAQ that eNom's fee is only $90. May I suggest a name change to FatWallet?

Hello Stephanie,

My name is Melissa and I am the Social Media Manager here at FatCow. I'm sorry to hear you've had a bad experience and I would like to see if I can assist you with this to improve that experience.

We post renewal information in Billing Central in the Control Panel and have the knowledge base article below explaining rates. On our main page before sign up there is a posting stating that we offer promotional rates for new customers but that plans do renew at normal rate. We post this information in an effort to be open and honest with our customers, I'm sorry if you did not see it beforehand.

Redemption itself is something that expired domains that have reached an extended expiration time go through, you are correct in this. Redemption means that the registration provider has taken ownership of the domain again as they assume due to the extended time in expiration that the owner no longer wants the domain. In order to retrieve the domain an extra fee has to be paid to the registration provider to gain ownership if the domain again and then renew it at the normal registration fee. The fee itself is actually something we have to pay our provider however I would like to check and see if there is anything we can do on our part to help in this situation. If you would like my assistance please email me at melissa(at)fatcow(dot)com so I can better assist you and investigate further.

Small update

I am the OP of this complaint, and I couldn't find a way to edit. The Domain Redemption Grace Period is something that all expired domains go through, where for 30 days they can only be renewed through the original registrar (FatCow in my case), however the registrar does NOT need to charge a ridiculously inflated fee for this.
