I wanted to take a moment to share with all others that have posted remarks on the FCNB transfer of accounts.
I too was in the same boat as many of you and had a returned payment from FCNB (that was for the full amount of the measly balance remaining on the account) at the time they closed their doors.

I attempted to contact the company by phone but the number was no longer in service and there was no alternate number or information given. I called Newport News and they explained that there was a change in credit companies (never mentioning bankruptcy) and that I would be contacted by the new company as to the new account and mailing information.

Almost two months later, I too received a bill that had late charges from the new Credit Company that simply went by Card Processing Center on the back of the statement. I attempted to contact the new company but was only able to speak with someone to make a payment...NOT to contest the late charges applied. I paid the remaining balance on the card over the phone (less late fees applied) and then wrote a scathing letter to which I received no response.

After two months of hearing nothing and receiving additional statements received showing more late charges, I again contacted Newport News/ Spiegel for any assistance they could offer in reaching anyone that could further assist me... still no new information available.
I then did what I strongly urge all others to do. I contacted my state's Attorney General's office.

After submitting my complaint to them in writing and included several of the other complaints I found on this site, the attorney that was assigned my complaint took immediate action. There were several other twists that took place over the past few weeks but as of last week I received a letter from the Card Processing Center (which I was told is a dept. of the First National Bank of Omaha) stating that this account had a zero balance and was closed. Needless to say, I am elated to have an almost six month ordeal come to a close.

The final step now is now to check my credit report and make certain that there is no negative filings and then I can FINALLY put this thing to rest.

I have learned my lesson and will NEVER again open an account to receive a discount on a purchase I am making. I also will never do business with Spiegel/Newport News again. They were in no way concerned with this issue that was originated by purchasing products from their company or they too would have pursued a resolution on all of our behalves. I wish you all the best of luck in resolving your issues and again urge you to contact your Attorney General's office for assistance in correcting the unethical business practices we have suffered through this transition.

NY Attorney General Will Help

AUTHOR: Linda - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, December 08, 2003

It's worth submitting a complaint about FCNB to the New York Attorney General. It took about two months, but I ended up with a $105.00 refund for the late charges I was contesting.
