A guy with a strong Indian accent called me and said that I had a arrest warrant out for failure to pay a payday loan.  They said that I would be required to appear in court in California with my fraud attorney.
They required me to fax a letter authorizing "their company to charge my card to avoid any dispute with this company as i can not come to California" I had to include my card number and contact information. I also needed to include a picture ID.
They called me back saying my card was declined and asked me how much money was in my account...at which time a red flag went up. They also told me to call my bank and authorize the charge that it would try it via a different merchant named Onyx Solutions.
I called my bank and canceled my debit card to prevent them from charging my card.

Wow, did YOU ever dodge a bullet!

First and foremost - there is no such thing as the Federal Bureau of Legislation, nor would any enforcement entity in this country legally be allowed to call and demand ANY kind of payment in regard to an arrest warrant. (They also won't call you to let you know they've got one - they'll just find you and arrest you. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to call the subject of an arrest warrant and clue 'em in on it, does it?)

Second - You got LUCKY, hoss. You should have never, EVER handed over that information in the first place. Though, now that there's a record of them trying to charge your card only to have it decline, you might be in possession of a piece of evidence your local DA might want to have if this is a widespread problem in your area.

Finally - That red flag should've popped up about two seconds into the call, not all the way to the point that the "company" in question is asking how much is in your bank account. NEVER EVER EVER GIVE OUT FINANCIAL INFORMATION ON THE PHONE! I don't care if it's to Bank of America and you intimately know the rep asking for the information. DON'T DO IT. You're just asking for trouble if you do.

Congratulations on your lucky break there. Hopefully if this ever happens to you again, you won't need to hope that the scammer's not so greedy that they try to overdraw.

Never give your bank account #s to any scammer they can wipe it out. The next time he calls tell him that a very bad curse has placed on him . Tell him if he calls again this curse will cause something bad to happen to him and his family.
